  1. ‘USS Abraham Lincoln sailors tried to jump overboard amid extended deployment – reports’ theguardian.com/us-news/2026/a

When those with all the capital have not only lost their compass. When the business of war becomes a business for war to control oil and gas it is the people who lose. Death cults are unsustainable, as dependent on deregulated markets, so why vote for those who invest in them? Isn’t it time to get rid of the ultras mob rule especially when it has no science of logic to justify its morality? Even the oligarchs and plutocrats are going to lose it all! #RiskingArmageddon #ForWhat #Sophists #Propaganda #Losers #Foundation #EndOfEmpires #FederationOfRepublics

  7. So many Youtube DIYers don't know about concrete vibrators and do shitty concrete pours or add excessive water to make it more "flowy".

Mine was €60 from Ali and has done a fantastic job so far. Especially with casting against the old foundation it really gets the concrete flowing into the gaps between the stones to lock them in place. I see the air bubbles pop out of them when getting the tip near one and the concrete level drops as it flows in.

Same for making sure it flows into the extended footing and fills it.

It'll also make sure the rebar and anchor bolts are completely surrounded, which is essential for them to grip well.

Here's an example of the effect:

  9. Corner poured. There were many dark rainclouds passing by but my squinting at them caused them to behave.

This is the pouring setup after a few iterations.

Tractor with ancient manure cart top on pallet forks. Filled with four wide bucket loads from the excavator by the pile in the back. From there, shoveled into the mixer.

Cement tub on the other side and a small cart to haul bags from the barn and decant them into the tub.

Water trickling from a hose fills the water tub under the mixer with the fill bucket floating in it. It also catches most spills/wash from the mixer.

Concrete chute directly behind the insulation panels, with a plastic foil and board protecting the wall. The chute got a high side to catch the splashes.

  16. Corner closed and skirt laid. Yes, the corner skirt extends that far.

As this cornerstone had moved (a few mm in 90 years), there's a void for an extended concrete footing under the skirt.

Now a little bit of cleanup, some bitumen, a thin layer of sand for drainage and the dirt can go back in to cover the skirt, protecting it.

Its rather hot today and this white foam is very reflective, so I'm being roasted from all sides 😓

  18. Many holes drilled, which is slow work. The Makita drill bit is more durable, lasted about twice as long as even the super expensive Bosch one. And these were actually quite cheap, although that was a reduced price.

The rocks look like hedgehogs now with anchor bolts and rebar in them but got quickly covered up by foam panels. Almost got to the corner before it got too late and I ran out of juice.

One round rock was under a foundation stone and so remained in place, with the foam cut around it and then added back on the outside to make up for lost thickness.

Few more panels and then the skirt, which requires careful grading and another round of digging as it extends further out on the corner.

  20. Back in the trenches of the foundation project. Yesterday I chiselled off the last of the bad old concrete, which was so poorly adhered it came off in big chunks.

The granite wedges I picked out for re-use, then filled some new concrete into the big gaps under the beam.

While that cures, I've dug out the cornerstone, levered out some big rocks and pressure washed the stones.

Next the anchors, rebar and insulation foam panels (which double as "lost" formwork). Lets see how the Makita drill bits hold up to the granite.

yeah. At least you can read the books again and none of this will be spoiling anything.

I just sort of got locked into watching the trainwreck, then I figured I should document the atrocities.

To be fair, I never really liked what Asimov did with the series in the 80s, when he picked it up again after leaving it undisturbed for 30 years, and then got this idea that he should unify everything he ever wrote onto a single timeline (though I can see how the challenge of it would appeal to him).

And I also like it when adaptations start with flawed material -- way more opportunities to fix stuff...

But that's not what they did. It's almost like they started from, "How stupid can we make this?"

Man, they **really** like blowing up planets.

Galactic Council makes deal to hand over Trantor to the Mule. But Old Emperor is all ha ha, fuck you, no, also I have huge black hole gun and now you can watch me destroy all of your home planets. boom boom boom boom boom.

Oh, and Bayta is The Mule (**not** the guy we've been seeing all season who somehow also has the powers? this is never explained) But that's okay we hacked Magnifico's VIsi-Sonar so it no longer works, and that caught her by surprise and thus Gael is able to kill her.

    Bet you weren't expecting that!

It's really feeling like a D&D game at this point. All plot questions decided by dice rolls.

Season 3 is done. no season 4. yay.

god, the writing on this just gets better and better:

"65 octaves below the middle C"

Let's see,… by my math, that's roughly one cycle every 2⁵⁷ seconds ≈ 4.6 billion years, meaning this is a wave that cycles maybe 3 times over the lifetime of the universe.

Demerzel is an 11,000-year-old robot, so, in the absolute best case, she's hearing an amplitude change of 0.00024% over her entire lifetime.

I guess that counts as Pretty Good Hearing.

  30. CW: spoilers

    @nosrednayduj I've finished season 2.
    Bel Riose destroys Terminus.
Spacers then make his own fleet destroy itself.
But not before he throws the Emperor out an airlock + final scene of him with Hober Mallow doing a toast with crappy wine before their ship blows up.
Fortunately, the Vault (pilot: Hari Seldon Copy #1) rescues everyone from the planet.

Meanwhile, on Random Other Planet, Gael Dornick, Salvor Hardin, and Hari Seldon Copy #2 have found telepaths to start the 2nd Foundation with. Dornick and Seldon are now in cryosleep so that they'll be around 150 years from now to defeat the Mule, whom Dornick has foreseen.

  32. What's weird is somebody evidently went to the trouble of READING the books, because they are, in fact, name-checking everything they can.

But then they apparently also didn't see the point to any of it.

    They kept Doomed Galactic Empire,

They kept Guy With a Plan.

    And that is ALL

I get that actually following the books or at least the intent of the books, and having the end product still be watchable would be Hard. Even though the books have been out for 60+ years, there's a reason nobody has attempted this before (and, I suspect, nobody will attempt this again for a long time).

But this wasn't even an attempt.

    It isn't even fan-fiction.

They should have just named it something else; it would have been fine that way.

  34. Progress at last. Braved it despite a "Dangerous Thunderstorm Warning" and got lucky.

Shovelled ~1000 kg cement and aggregate into the orange hole and poured them down the slot between old foundation and new foam.

While I was still cleaning up, the rain came, but once the concrete is done there is only the small slot to cover, so everything is fine. I got soaked but my concrete is safe.

    Phew!

New sand hauling method works ok too. Four heaped grading buckets of wet sand is the maximum. That's plenty for a couple mixer loads. Better than making a mess of the car trailer.
