There are usually 5 basic steps to finishing your log home:
1. Prep the surface
2. Preserve against rot, bugs and fire.
3. Apply the stain, clear coats if using
4. Apply the chinking and sealants
5. Relax and enjoy your work!

Done digitizing the house. Well, apart from roof and attic which aren't very interesting right now.
Now to plan a bunch of stuff so we can decide if our ideas will work and what to do about doors, windows, etc.

Limewash is an interesting material. It's not paint, you just throw a bunch of slaked lime into water and keep it there. The longer you keep it under water, the finer it gets.
When you need it, dredge out a quantity of the stuff with enough liquid so it's like creamy yoghurt.
Best applied with a thick brush, likes to splash everywhere and is caustic enough to etch an aluminium ladder, so protect yourself.
It goes on looking thin but hardens by absorbing atmospheric CO2 (yup, carbon capture, or recapture at least) and turns whiter as it does.
Unlike cement and many modern paints, it is moisture permeable and so lets the log "breathe" and not rot underneath.
It's also antibacterial, so used to be applied regularly in animal barns.

Too hot outside, so tackled some work in the kitchen.
The wall where we tore out a rotten old shelf looked ugly. The logs are in reasonable shape for their age but the limewash was due for renewal about half a century ago, mostly flaked off and mixed with a few spills.
There were also gaps where the logs had shrunken from drying.
Last winter we gathered some sphagnum moss in the forest and dried it in the sauna.
Great material, as evidenced by the original moss still being intact after 90 years. Nature's spray foam, minus the cancer.
I used a piece of scrap metal to push it in, which worked well, bit like caulking a wooden boat, although it took the entire bag of moss as it compresses a lot.

New record holder for biggest nail I pulled out of a wall yet.
Came out easy after sticking the crowbar through the ring and twisting it.

Future bathroom clearout continues.
I pulled this many nails out of the walls (and ceiling) of that room.
Plus a few that got swept up into the compost and can provide iron for future spinach plants.

Something going through my head as I work on this old log house. Most things here are made of natural materials.
Wood, hay, straw, chaff, cotton, flax. Iron nails. Things that can be composted on site, used for heating, recycled (iron/steel) or even used again (a lot of the wood goes into storage).
Compare that with modern houses made of every kind of plastic, adhesive, sealant, foam, etc.
Unrecyclable waste when end of life. Toxic sludge if it burns down.

Beautiful forest hideout.

Viewed the 90 year old house.
The logs are in great shape for their age. It was built well, using only trees felled in winter (dry, no wood boring insects) and maintained since.
The owner, born in 1926, showed us the property and his photo albums. He's been living here for 40 years.
A good barn, a bad barn, sauna, two wells, grain store, beekeeping stuff, loads.
Loads of work, too. Original windows. No shower. The road is noisy. Single phase electricity.
We like it.

Moving servers so time for a new #Introduction post!
Camping is my life, my wife and I go #camping in our #truckcamper about 30-40 times a year, mostly in the #pnw.
Living in #Pdx since 1989, we took 2 years to build our own #loghouse in 1992 which we still live in today.
For fun, I listen to a LOT of music, play video games and am trying my hand at #gamedev.
Currently have a small independent #woodworking shop where I do custom commissions.
In my past, I was a #software dev and then manager at Intel (25yrs), Nike (5yrs) and ATT (5yrs) and still follow #tech / #security.
I am a fervent ally and believer in #blm, #Indigenous rights and #lgbtq.
Very worried about climate and believe right now we need to invest in #nuclear if we want to make immediate progress.
