Pouring station ready. And dirt piles moved out of the way.
Will see what the weather brings tomorrow. Been a bit unruly in some parts of the country with roofs flying away and trees blowing over.

Corner closed and skirt laid. Yes, the corner skirt extends that far.
As this cornerstone had moved (a few mm in 90 years), there's a void for an extended concrete footing under the skirt.
Now a little bit of cleanup, some bitumen, a thin layer of sand for drainage and the dirt can go back in to cover the skirt, protecting it.
Its rather hot today and this white foam is very reflective, so I'm being roasted from all sides 😓

Many holes drilled, which is slow work. The Makita drill bit is more durable, lasted about twice as long as even the super expensive Bosch one. And these were actually quite cheap, although that was a reduced price.
The rocks look like hedgehogs now with anchor bolts and rebar in them but got quickly covered up by foam panels. Almost got to the corner before it got too late and I ran out of juice.
One round rock was under a foundation stone and so remained in place, with the foam cut around it and then added back on the outside to make up for lost thickness.
Few more panels and then the skirt, which requires careful grading and another round of digging as it extends further out on the corner.

The granite wedges I picked out for re-use, then filled some new concrete into the big gaps under the beam.
While that cures, I've dug out the cornerstone, levered out some big rocks and pressure washed the stones.
Next the anchors, rebar and insulation foam panels (which double as "lost" formwork). Lets see how the Makita drill bits hold up to the granite.

Phew, skirt laid, bitumen on the seams and then filled in a hurry while the sky filled with dark clouds.
Never dug so fast, usually I've got the excavator at half throttle for more precision but apparently I can go fast when I need to now.
Well, if I don't mind leaving a big mess to be sorted out later. But nothing is going to fly away or turn into a swimming pool now. Hopefully.
Filling before concreting should greatly reduce the supports needed, although I still need one for the top before I can pour concrete in there.

Footing foam went in.
Its just as sunny as yesterday, but there's a breeze going making it more tolerable.
Also the occasional gust smacking a foam panel in my face or chasing one down in the yard.
Skirt/apron (never quite sure which term is right, I guess both work) went in next, with the first part of a corner extending outwards, because corners leak more and thus need more protection.
I'm racing to finish and close this before the next big rain 😰

Late again, but progress was made.
Hacked away the clay and some boulders on this stretch. This was more manual labour than on the previous side, because with the concrete overhang the excavator couldn't get as close to the wall. Also because it was hot and this is the south side and I of course ended up doing it at noon 😰
Next a lot of drilling, finishing the final hole as my last SDS bit melted. These rocks are really hard. The same drill bit will go through concrete like butter but die after about a dozen holes in granite.
Installed anchor bolts to connect the big stones (and old concrete) to the new concrete. Then more holes for rebar spacers/supports, the long rebar pieces and the top XPS panels.

Decided to leave the new concrete on the right to cure until it is hard enough to handle stone wedges. Shifting to the left and including the corner there instead.
With the previous gaps re-supported, I did the sections between them today, and since I hate leaving holes in the house open it got late before it was all done.
Didn't have enough wedges for the big gaps, so had to figure out how to make more. Basically hit a fieldstone with a big hammer until it breaks.
Knackered!

Chiselled off the top of the wrongful concrete with the good old Makita HR2450. Had to take breaks, my hands were tingling and the hammer drill got hot.
Chiselled away the rotten wood and blew dirt and ants out with compressed air. Then yummy wood preserver so they don't come back.
As the log was now basically hanging in the air, I have to work in sections, which is annoying.
Most were easy, wedged in flat granite chunks as the original builders have taught me to resupport the log, then filled the voids with lime mortar, which keeps stuff out while permitting moisture to leave.
The first section didn't have a good foundation so there I had to build up with fresh (cement) mortar and scrap concrete. This will take time to cure 😤

Lime mortar cures by binding atmospheric carbon dioxide, so I expect a fat payment for my carbon capture!
The rest was spent on a run to town for some paperwork and supplies.

Peeled off the wooden flashing and the bottom siding board as well, revealing the bottom log for the first time. Not great, not terrible. Old insect damage, a bit of dry rot here and there and some ants living in one spot.
Someone had been in there and messed around with concrete. That needs to come off. Luckily its mostly falling off on its own.
Then made a complete hash of unsproinging a 100m fibreglass rebar roll all over the yard :blobcattableflip:
The rest was spent measuring, agonizing, deciding and making jigs.
Oh, and a rock fastener trial.

The rough hewn stone walls are about 70 cm deep before extending outwards onto a single layer of support rocks. These sit on the red clay we have everywhere below the topsoil here. It's very compact, surprisingly dry and water drained off quickly.
There's a thin layer of lime above the support rocks, perhaps it was dug up for repointing with lime mortar once or it was from the original pointing.
Also many glass shards and even some little bottles. No asbestos roof shards or other modern trash, so it may be I'm the first one to dig this up since it was built in 1938, but not sure yet.

Ordering a bunch of windows. Two of them are even the same! The rest unique, because old log house.
We opted for the top openable/bottom fixed type, so you can leave stuff on the windowsill and also because they are quite low. Which we got used to and like now. You can see more of the garden :)

Done digitizing the house. Well, apart from roof and attic which aren't very interesting right now.
Now to plan a bunch of stuff so we can decide if our ideas will work and what to do about doors, windows, etc.

Limewash is an interesting material. It's not paint, you just throw a bunch of slaked lime into water and keep it there. The longer you keep it under water, the finer it gets.
When you need it, dredge out a quantity of the stuff with enough liquid so it's like creamy yoghurt.
Best applied with a thick brush, likes to splash everywhere and is caustic enough to etch an aluminium ladder, so protect yourself.
It goes on looking thin but hardens by absorbing atmospheric CO2 (yup, carbon capture, or recapture at least) and turns whiter as it does.
Unlike cement and many modern paints, it is moisture permeable and so lets the log "breathe" and not rot underneath.
It's also antibacterial, so used to be applied regularly in animal barns.

I pulled this many nails out of the walls (and ceiling) of that room.
Plus a few that got swept up into the compost and can provide iron for future spinach plants.

Something going through my head as I work on this old log house. Most things here are made of natural materials.
Wood, hay, straw, chaff, cotton, flax. Iron nails. Things that can be composted on site, used for heating, recycled (iron/steel) or even used again (a lot of the wood goes into storage).
Compare that with modern houses made of every kind of plastic, adhesive, sealant, foam, etc.
Unrecyclable waste when end of life. Toxic sludge if it burns down.
