My wife and I are heading out for our annual immunizations today. Hmm… that really does sound like something only a senior citizen would say, doesn’t it. Still, it feels like an outing—an adventure, even. We have somewhere to go, something on the calendar, a mission.

I haven’t made it down to the senior center yet, though I’ve been thinking about sticking my head in. My wife went once and told me we should go together, but she’s never mentioned it again. Evidently the lady she went with had been banned from the center. I’m not sure what the official charge was, but my wife said it had something to do with her allegedly taking an artificial plant—and apparently she was a repeat offender. The police even showed up while my wife was there. I mean honestly, how do you get banned from a senior center?

I don’t think that woman is part of my wife’s gang, the Sew Crazy Quilters—the local quilting guild. They’re a wild bunch, but I haven’t heard of any of them getting kicked out of the senior center. I always picture them in denim vests with a quilted sewing machine on the back and a tiny embroidered “QG” in the corner. Naturally, “Sew Crazy” would be stitched in an arc over the top like a biker patch.

Every so often they go on what’s called a shop hop—a list of quilting shops scattered across the region, sometimes pretty far out. The goal is to visit each shop, collect a token, and sign in. I suppose it’s not entirely unlike a bar hop or a poker run that motorcyclists do, just with more fabric and fewer leather vests.

And so our day’s big mission comes to a gentle, well‑stitched close.

A reader asked me a very legitimate question about the coming segmentation of the computing marketplace I’ve been writing about.

Essentially the question was why I thought it was a bad trend.

Here’s one reason why. While it is somewhat about increasing costs, it’s about more than that.

I do technical support with a number of senior citizens, among others. To be frank, the majority of the seniors are terribly frustrated with computers, smartphones, the Internet, and basically any technology. The conversation typically begins about healthcare as they have to use apps like MyChart or the Internet to communicate with their doctors. It moves down the line from banks to government agencies to grocery stores who require apps to access what were once coupon savings.

If they buy or are gifted something that requires an app or an account to use they typically just don’t want to set it up. The thought of updating any operating system fills them with dread. Setting up a new phone or computer has kept some from even considering upgrading to newer devices. The fact that I will typically find too many apps that need updating on their devices speaks to their reluctance to even pay attention to that chore.

Most are turned off by the mere thought of AI, but a few hope it makes things easier. None want to pay for it. They universally despise Google’s AI summaries in Search. Real life experiences with doctors and support services that are switching to AI Chatbot customer service is spoken of as it were a demon spawn from hell. Not being able to talk to a person drives them over the edge.

All are frustrated with the increasing costs from hardware to services. I can’t begin to tell you the number of subscriptions I’ve had to help them cancel as they choose to do without. For most it isn’t a question of affordability. After all they have the resources to hire me. Although for some it is. It’s more a feeling of getting ripped off, paying for features and services that they don’t want, and that the prices always increase. They also display an astonishing and increasing lack of trust in anything tech related.

If I had to summarize the prevailing mood of this admittedly limited sample it’s one of not worth the costs or the headaches so they wish they could simply do without. The sad reality is that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to do so. Especially for a generation that relies on health care professionals more than the younger set.

They are far from the bleeding edge. They mostly want to do video calls and see photos and videos of family. A few want to play games. Some want to read and watch streaming video. They all use email and messaging and no one understands why spam still exists. To quote one, “if they can’t fix that, they should get out of the damn business of selling phones.”

It is this segment of the market that I worry most about.

As an example I recently supported a family going through the far too onerous process of applying for Medicaid. The amount of scanning and digital paperwork they had to submit was horrendous. The act of filing out online forms was just as taxing. Of course part of that problem lies with the ridiculous Medicaid system. There was no way around what they had to go through but to do the drudge work and get it done. With all the talk of AI potentially removing drudge work from our lives, when I see someone deliver software that can tackle that system from both a users’s perspective and also from a bureaucratic one, I’ll believe the folks pushing that dream are out to do something other than make money. Believe me, they could make a lot of money if they cared to do so.

In my opinion tech companies, largely run by folks not in the senior set or too wealthy to have to worry about these things, would do well to put focus groups of seniors together to try out new technology and products. I don’t believe that will happen. Perhaps the prevailing wisdom is that by the time the youngsters pushing the tech envelopes reach the age when these frustration points of today’s seniors might matter to them, the tech they are working on today might take those frustrations away.

I’m not holding my breath.

Better than Streaming: Free Movie Admission For Senior Citizens In Muntinlupa City Restored

Welcome back fellow geeks and film buffs!

In the progressive city of Muntinlupa in the Philippines, the City Government led by Mayor Ruffy Biazon formally signed the memorandum of agreement (MOA) with three cinema operators – Alabang Town Center, Festival Mall and SM Center Muntinlupa – granting free admission for senior citizens with limits starting July 6, 2026, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

This move effectively restored the movie benefit of senior citizens in the city. Regarding the limitations of the benefit, free movie admissions will happen once-a-week, either on Monday or Tuesday.

Senior citizens in Muntinlupa will once again be able to watch movies for free starting July 6, following the signing of an agreement between the city government and cinema operators.

On July 1, Muntinlupa Mayor Ruffy Biazon signed a memorandum of agreement with SM Center Muntinlupa, Festival Mall, and Alabang Town Center granting senior citizens free movie admission.

Biazon said bona fide residents of Muntinlupa can avail themselves of the free movie admission once a week, either on Monday or Tuesday.

In May, Biazon signed City Council Resolution No. 2026-333, which authorized him to enter into the agreement with cinema operators in the city.

The resolution stated: “Senior Citizens of Muntinlupa City are given preferential attention and priority to enjoy additional grants of incentives as an expression of gratitude for their invaluable contribution to the progress and prosperity of Muntinlupa City.”

This latest development will eventually attract more senior citizens to enter the specific commercial places that have cinemas. Festival Mall’s modern cinemas are located at the 4th floor (AKA 3rd level) while those at Alabang Town Center are on the ground floor. Watching movies on the big screen inside the cinema is more immersive and clearly better than streaming.

Streaming extremists who oppose cinema viewing cannot argue with the fact that almost all movies released from long ago were made for the big screen inside the theaters, not for smartphones, not for laptops and not for TV sets. I should state that senior citizens can enjoy spending time inside commercial joints socializing with friends after watching movies, and it definitely is not ideal for them to spend all their free time inside their homes. There is the human need for the temporary change of place and it is only the cinema that can provide them the immersive, big screen entertainment experience.

The Old Man

The title of this post does not refer to the title of a streaming TV series that is one of the best examples out there of a show having a winning first season and then completely deteriorating in its second. But perhaps that show’s failure the second time around could be a metaphor. 

The title actually refers to what is happening before our eyes with Donald Trump. He’s physically breaking down fast in this, his second term. I don’t need to know his medical condition to see it. Neither do most. He and his enablers he’s assembled around him are lying to us and themselves about whatever is ailing him. For some reason they think they can pull that off. They can’t. 

Here’s why.

Too many people in their lives have been faced with an aging or sick relative and had to watch the deterioration first hand. It’s a saga of life that everyone but only the very young knows. In these cases, the parent eventually becomes the child again, to be cared for by the child they raised. 

Difficult moments present themselves all along the journey. Drivers license and car keys are taken away. Financial and medical decisions are assigned to others. Houses get rearranged. Sadly at some point for some they get moved into some form of long term care, which is nothing more than a way station warehouse before the end eventually arrives. 

And those are the lucky ones who have family willing to do the work and bear the burden. 

I’ve lived through these situations more times than I would have liked. It’s challenging and changes everything for everyone it touches. 

There are always moments of denial and deflection before rationality sets in and necessary steps are taken. That pushback comes from those suffering and those supporting them. The conversations and confrontations are never easy. Someone once told me that you don’t really grow up until you face these challenges with an elderly loved one. I think they might be right. 

It’s so familiar that it’s one of those oft repeated situations in life that when the loved one and/or their families finally admit what they’re dealing with to everyone around them, everyone around them breathes a sigh of relief and delivers those painful looks that say they’ve known all along. 

In and of itself, those moments are a part of life’s cycles we can’t seem to break.

That so many have experienced something similar in their families shows just how irrational and afraid those enabling Trump must be to pretend that what most can see with their own eyes isn’t real. Being politically astute and thinking you’re smart enough to survive are two completely different skill sets.

Perhaps if their pardons were already signed things might be different. 

Set aside just how awful this old man has been for the world. I don’t mean to extend any pity or sympathy towards him by saying that. He deserves none. But as we watch him continue to whither away, dragging the country approaching it’s 250th anniversary down with him, it’s a damn shame no one had the courage to tell the old man his time was up, instead of letting him, and us, linger in a farce of fog. 

Putting this on a political stage, we’ve seen ailing and dying leaders propped up before. So, that’s nothing new. I would just offer that the propping up is more about those doing the propping than the old man they keep lying to protect.

Over 1,400 Las Piñas City Senior Citizens Receive 1st Quarter Pension

Recently in Las Piñas City, more than one thousand four hundred senior citizens from three different barangays received their social pension of P3,000 each for the first quarter this year, the City Government announced. Mayor April Aguilar personally attended the distribution and met with the constituents.

More than 1,400 senior citizens from Barangay Pulanglupa Dos, Manuyo Dos, and CAA have personally received their P3,000 Social Pension for the first quarter of 2026.

Payout was done at Aguilar Sports Complex where our grandparents were comfortable waiting to be called for their pension.

Mayor April also reminded our seniors of the programs the city provides freely to them to better care for their health and well-being. Because in Las Piñas, caring is not just a word.

The Las Piñas City government released cash aid to 3,900 senior citizens across nine barangays as part of the first-quarter social pension program for 2026.

Las Piñas City Mayor April Aguilar said the payout, led by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), was conducted at the Aguilar Sports Complex to ensure an orderly and efficient distribution.

A total of 1,700 beneficiaries from Barangays Talon Uno, Talon Singko, Talon Tres, and Pilar received P3,000 each during the initial payout.

Another 2,200 senior citizens from Barangays Ilaya, Pamplona Uno, Manuyo Dos, Daniel Fajardo, and Elias Aldana got their cash assistance on April 20.

Aguilar said the distribution was “smooth, organized, and fast,” allowing elderly beneficiaries to conveniently receive their allowance without long delays.

Excerpt of last night's field report from the Alamogordo, New Mexico volunteer canvassing army:

Mr J S at the Aristocrat, who's organized about 32 voters to get to the polls from assisted living, tomorrow, did us another HUGE favor on the mail-in ballots: I sent him the list from the Aristocrat Address, he confirmed, by less than 20minutes later that: 1 died, 1 moved to Las Cruces, 1 bedridden and didn't get her mail in ballot on time and too frail to "go out & vote": saved us about 45 minutes, during this critical time. ALSO, Mr J S took 120 Sharon flyers to the White Sands Mall, and passed them out, from his mobility aid-assisted situation - what an activist & supporter! You gotta recognize a living legend of enthusiasm for community care and community building, even when his chips are down. He can't talk on the phone anymore because he's too deaf and the tech is too complicated for him to use as support: but he does text, instead! I love our elders, who show me paths over obstacles, and how to inspire others from all life vantage points.
