📡 NASA figured out how to keep its 48-year-old Voyager 2 probe running for yet another year
「 To keep the probe running on this dwindling power supply, engineers recently reduced Voyager 2's power requirements by turning off a few non-science devices and using "lower-power alternatives" that are still effective enough to keep the spacecraft warm while it's so far from the sun 」

Corrections have been applied and both @voyager1 and @voyager2 should have (more) correct distances from tomorrow.
Also added the light-time to their profile descriptions because why not.
Horribly (and I mean HORRIBLY) crufty code at https://git.rjp.is/rjp/voyagers if anyone is interested.

I want to do something to celebrate Voyager’s upcoming 1 light-day accomplishment but I already made a Voyager quilt so I’m stumped. Any suggestions? What is everyone else doing?

NASA have put up new Voyager 1 and 2 JSON data files. I'll update the base information for the @voyager1 and @voyager2 bots some time this weekend and tweak the daily updates to extrapolate from those (with a weekly update) instead of the BSP files (which seem to be lagging badly.)

NASA, the undisputed kings of "let's see how long we can keep this dinosaur alive," have decided to squeeze another year out of their geriatric Voyager 2 probe. 🤖🕺 Meanwhile, the rest of us are over here feeling like we've aged 48 years waiting for our Wi-Fi to connect. 📡💀

#Voyager2 cheats the power budget for another year
Carefully choreographed shutdown gives probe's three remaining instruments more time
#NASA's #JPL have eked out a little more life for instruments aboard the veteran Voyager 2 probe thanks to a power-saving effort called the "Big Bang."
The procedure involved switching several powered devices at once, turning some off and replacing others with lower-power alternatives while keeping the #spacecraft warm enough to function.
