  1. Hilo International PHTO → Ellison Onizuka Kona International PHKO

While I'm still figuring out where my next multi-leg journey will take me, I thought: why not see if the Cessna 172 can fly over Mauna Kea? Its service ceiling is 14,000 ft, and Mauna Kea stands at 13,803 ft.

So, I packed some oxygen and took off. After a wide circle around the volcano and the slowest climb of all time (100–200 ft/min), the altimeter maxed out at 15,000 ft, leaving me with a comfortable margin over the summit.

  3. 35 years ago today a particularly long total #SolarEclipse hit Hawaii and Central and South America - of which astronomers on #MaunaKea made ample use as the legendary #WGBH documentary "Eclipse of th Century" shows: youtube.com/watch?v=JRI5FEQbn7o = archive.org/details/Eclipseoft (my favorite scene is in minute 45-46 when astronomers rush out of a telescope control room during totality to marvel at the eclipse with their own eyes). See also diary4dan.wordpress.com/2016/0 and skyweek.wordpress.com/2026/07/ ("Eine ungewöhnlich lange Totale Sonnenfinsternis") for further memories of that event I've found online 10 years ago and today.
