Hilo International PHTO → Ellison Onizuka Kona International PHKO

While I'm still figuring out where my next multi-leg journey will take me, I thought: why not see if the Cessna 172 can fly over Mauna Kea? Its service ceiling is 14,000 ft, and Mauna Kea stands at 13,803 ft.

So, I packed some oxygen and took off. After a wide circle around the volcano and the slowest climb of all time (100–200 ft/min), the altimeter maxed out at 15,000 ft, leaving me with a comfortable margin over the summit.

Eareckson Air Station PASY → Casco Cove PAAT

With this small leg, I've finished my trip, which took me all the way from San Diego up the US West Coast (and a bit of Canada) to the western tip of the Aleutians. All in all, that was about 4,500 nm (8,300 km) with plenty of amazing impressions.

I'm now thinking about where the next big journey will take me.

Atka PAAK → Adak PADK

At just under 100 nm, this is actually one of the shorter distances between two airports here in the western Aleutians. It's another perfect route for the Cessna and, with the good weather, comfortable enough to hand-fly.

After takeoff, I went over a small mountain range, which required an extra loop in the old Cessna to gain enough altitude.

After that, I followed the rivers down to the Pacific coast, where I chose one of the available grass strips for landing.

A route absolutely perfect for a hand-flown Cessna 172.

At the destination, there was strangely a King Air just sitting there alongside the gravel runway, I've no idea what it was doing there ;-)

Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport KMFR → Roseburg Regional KRBG

A calm day with barely any wind. In the evening, a few hot air balloons took to the sky. Just before sunset, I touched down in Roseburg with the trusty Cessna 172.

Turning 50 is a big milestone, although one that I wasn't too thrilled to commemorate, as my aging and aching body reminds me daily that I'm just getting older, not wiser 😜

My partner planned a surprise trip to #Hanko for us ("just for lunch"), with me taking the wheel for a major part of it! Enjoying the views of southern #Finland from above was icing on this cake. I felt like I was 42 again! 😂

This is the 2nd time it happened. Got a Diamond upgrade ahead of time for the O'Hare Hilton after booking a runway view. I appreciate the suite upgrade but I really want that runway view, had to call for the "downgrade". Too much of an airplane nerd ;)
