Took this photo in 2005, but it was never processed. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a...what? I've never seen one of those. <putters on the internet: Hey, you can find out about planes by those numbers on them!>

It's a Cessna 337G, manufactured in 1976, and registered to Silvertip Aviation Ltd, which is a Canadian flight operator, out of BC. Long way from home that day. This photo is from before the son took over the business.

Hilo International PHTO → Ellison Onizuka Kona International PHKO

While I'm still figuring out where my next multi-leg journey will take me, I thought: why not see if the Cessna 172 can fly over Mauna Kea? Its service ceiling is 14,000 ft, and Mauna Kea stands at 13,803 ft.

So, I packed some oxygen and took off. After a wide circle around the volcano and the slowest climb of all time (100–200 ft/min), the altimeter maxed out at 15,000 ft, leaving me with a comfortable margin over the summit.

Eareckson Air Station PASY → Casco Cove PAAT

With this small leg, I've finished my trip, which took me all the way from San Diego up the US West Coast (and a bit of Canada) to the western tip of the Aleutians. All in all, that was about 4,500 nm (8,300 km) with plenty of amazing impressions.

I'm now thinking about where the next big journey will take me.

Atka PAAK → Adak PADK

At just under 100 nm, this is actually one of the shorter distances between two airports here in the western Aleutians. It's another perfect route for the Cessna and, with the good weather, comfortable enough to hand-fly.

Since yesterday, it has been quite windy and especially gusty here at home (south of Berlin, Germany). There are also occasional showers passing through. I thought I'd check how well the “Live Weather” in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 replicates the local conditions. Pretty good, I'd say.

After takeoff, I went over a small mountain range, which required an extra loop in the old Cessna to gain enough altitude.

After that, I followed the rivers down to the Pacific coast, where I chose one of the available grass strips for landing.

A route absolutely perfect for a hand-flown Cessna 172.

At the destination, there was strangely a King Air just sitting there alongside the gravel runway, I've no idea what it was doing there ;-)
