Hilo International PHTO → Ellison Onizuka Kona International PHKO

While I'm still figuring out where my next multi-leg journey will take me, I thought: why not see if the Cessna 172 can fly over Mauna Kea? Its service ceiling is 14,000 ft, and Mauna Kea stands at 13,803 ft.

So, I packed some oxygen and took off. After a wide circle around the volcano and the slowest climb of all time (100–200 ft/min), the altimeter maxed out at 15,000 ft, leaving me with a comfortable margin over the summit.

#PhotoOfTheDay is a sort of before-and-after photo of my railroad spike knife alongside a typical old and rusted spike as the "before" image. Many used spikes are in worse condition and may be bent, gouged, more heavily corroded, etc. Starting with one of the better ones simplifies the process a little.
