There is now a (kind of) explanation why the #ThirtyMeterTelescope consortium rejected the €1b gift from Spain in exchange for coming to La Palma: https://www.tmt.org/news/719 -> "TIO’s partners gave Spain’s financing proposal extensive and careful consideration and ultimately were not able to accept the proposal. [...] Financing a project of TMT’s scale across several countries and a 50-year lifespan is complex. [...] TIO pursued this proposal in earnest."

So the #ThirtyMeterTelescope project has rejected the offer of 1 billion (!)
