Great to see @esoastronomy celebrating the installation of the 4MOST instrument on the Vista telescope at Paranal Observatory.

The optical fibre positioning system (the part of 4MOST which stars in the photos and video) is called AESOP, and was designed and built by my colleagues at Australian Astronomical Optics (AAO), here in Sydney.

This is one of my favourite landscape photos from the trip to Chile because it's a great example of the dramatic, other-worldly landscape of the Atacama Desert, while also showing all the major components of Paranal Observatory.

It's a moderately telephoto (70 mm on APS-C) view towards Paranal Observatory from the Extremely Large Telescope construction site on Cerro Armazones, about 20 km distant. In the centre is Cerro Paranal itself, with the cluster of telescopes that make up the Very Large Telescope facility. Over to the right is a lower peak with a smaller telescope building, that is VISTA. To the lower left of the VISTA peak are some smaller white structures, that's the NGTS Observatory and the four SPECULOOS telescopes. Finally over on the left there are more white structures, those are the various utility and office buildings of the Paranal Observatory base camp.

I edited a couple of my own photos into a size comparison of ESO's Very Large Telescope(s) and Extremely Large Telescope. The top is the VLT photographed from the ELT (in the middle of the day) and the bottom photo is the ELT photographed from the VLT (at sunset). Same distance (20 km), same camera, same lens, so the scale of the two photos should be identical.

Edit: I removed the ELT scale bar because of a couple of issues. First, because the photo of the ELT was taken from a lower altitude part of the ELT building is hidden behind the near side of the flattened mountaintop. Second, the ELT dome doors have not yet been installed so the current structure is, I think, less than 80 metres tall.
