#Voyager2's close encounter with #Uranus wasn't in the original plan
At the time of Voyager 2's launch, Uranus wasn't part of the formal plan. The mission was referred to for a long time as the Mariner Jupiter-Saturn project. The #JPL engineers famously had other ideas and ensured the #spacecraft had enough fuel to continue on a trajectory to Uranus and beyond if the mission was approved.

jbowen: My math might contain errors
But errors are not terrors
We do the best that we can
To try is to be not also-ran
Plus the Old Coder is code from head to toe
Therefore, here you go
The answer is August 18, 2035
See below for detailed answer dive
Sources: The #rhyme and #math are original and not LLM. An LLM was used only to check some of the math. Details follow to demonstrate that the claim isn't hollow. The source for launch date, present distance, and future velocity is Wikipedia. The illustration is GenAI.
Voyager 2 was launched on August 20, 1977. Voyager 2's speed has varied from then until now. However, the current speed is about 34,320 MPH relative to Sol and is expected to be close to that from this point on.
Google states a slightly higher velocity than Wikipedia does [though only about half a percent higher]. We'll use Wikipedia's number for this post.
As of New Years Eve 2025, #Voyager2 is about 13.2 billion miles out from Earth's orbit [if one draws a straight line from Sol through Earth's orbit to the spacecraft]. [Uncertainty in the number might be -/+ 0.1 billion miles].
One light second = 186,282 miles.
So 13.2 billion miles = 13,200,000,000 miles / 186,282 miles per light second = 70,860 light seconds.
Seconds per day = 86,400.
So 13.2 billion miles = 70,860 light seconds / 86,400 seconds per day = 0.82 light days.
To reach 1 light day out, Voyager 2 must therefore travel another 1.00 - 0.82 light days or 0.18 light days = 0.18 light days * 86,400 seconds per day = 15,552 light seconds = 15,552 light seconds * 186,282 miles per light second = 2,897,057,664 miles.
As of New Years Eve 2025, the time still to go is therefore:
2,897,057,664 miles / 34,320 MPH = 84,413 hours
The following Python 3 code:
from datetime import datetime, timedelta
nyeve = datetime (2025, 12, 31, 0, 0, 0)
print (nyeve + timedelta (hours=84413))
indicates that the target date is August 18, 2035. If Google's estimate of future velocity is correct, the date might be about 3 weeks sooner.
In a humorous note, I asked an LLM to compute the date based on the number of hours and the LLM made a mistake in a fairly elementary calculation. -

@voyager1 and @voyager2 are (finally) alive.
Not sure on posting frequency (suggestions welcome) and this is currently just the "extrapolate from somedata in August 2025" approach that NASA use for their web page at https://science.nasa.gov/mission/voyager/where-are-voyager-1-and-voyager-2-now/
Suggestions also welcome on the formatting (it's been through about a million revisions and I'm still not 100% sure.)
The BSP version is coming.
(code will be up on a repo for PRs, etc. shortly)
