We had clear skies on 11/22 so I managed to get a few shots of M45 (the Pleiades), and sh2-129 squid nebula. The first three shots are M45 with different cameras and scopes, the last two are of sh2-129 - you can start to see the oblong blue nebula which is the Squid shape. I didn't capture enough shots to truly bring out the full shape, but hopefully I can add more to it over time. Enjoy!

The seven sisters were literally dancing over the full moon light. Not the best conditions for taking pics, but I tried anyway. I can confirm conditions were not good: their blue lights got destroyed by interference with the moon ones. #Astrophotography #M45 #Pleiades

Towards the end of last night I decided to shoot M45 - The Pleiades. For me this is a very special cluster because it has almost the same story associated with it across the entire world. Almost everywhere in the world it is some variation on seven sisters being chased by a man (Orion). This consistency is unique in the myths and stories associated with the stars, and the sort of thing that makes amateur cultural anthropologists overly excited.

Here I have used two similar telescopes, but with different filters. The blue one was shot using a basic light pollution filter, and the green with an Ha/OIII filter. The overall exposures are similar (50-59minutes), and the post-processing is similar. The green one was shot on a #DwarfII, and the blue on a #Dwarf3.

The different orientations are because I had packed up the DwarfII, expecting clouds that had appeared earlier to build up, whereas what actually happened was they dispersed. So I set it out again, but only in Alt/Az mode rather than EQ.

Last night we were treated to the Waxing Crescent Moon cozying up to the Pleiades star cluster just after sunset.

A low cloud was kind enough to pass in front of the moon when I took this photo, dimming its glow and revealing the line of craters while the unobscured stars were still shining brightly.

A quick heads-up that tomorrow there is a #LunarOccultation of #M45 #thePleiades visible from the UK. The #CrescentMoon shouldn't overpower the cluster too much. If you have binoculars it will look even better!

Currently doing a mosaic of #M45. It’s going slowly cos it’s very high in the sky and the Seestar struggles to handle the movement. Equatorial mode is coming shortly I believe. Be interesting to see how they set that up.

Why do the skies have to be clearest when the main rig is down for repairs? Anyways, have Dwarf.ii, needs must...

7.5hr on M45, the Pleiades, last night.

EQ-mode worked, although I didn't notice the difference in the data anyway. Took two runs, giving 999*2 = 1998 files (half fits, half TIFF because the dwarf doesn't put timestamps in its filenames). Also took all day to process the stuff properly in PI.

A widefield view of the Pleiades cluster and reflection nebula (M45) at the North-West end of the constellation Taurus. The surrounding interstellar dust in is illuminated by the blue giant stars of the cluster, giving this nice fuzzy blue cloud look.

While most images of the Pleiades focus on the cluster itself, I wanted to take a wider field image to show the extent of the interstellar dust in this area, including this long arching structure to the left of the cluster in the image.

I've had no time to do any astronomy for fun recently. I was working until after 4am this morning so had very little sleep, but I just made myself take 30mins to explore #Jupiter, loads of #StarClusters, #M45 + #M31 with my #SkywatcherHeritage 74mm mini #Dobsonian #telescope. No imaging - just looking. This telescope is so much fun and I love it 🥰

If you take the #London Road out of #Coventry and just keep going straight ahead along the #A45, sticking with the A45 off the #M45, you eventually end up going past #Daventry (London Road there too), #Northampton, #Wellingborough, and #Rushden . Indeed, if you aren't careful to stop where the A45 stops in Thrapston and keep going across the roundabout, you end up at #Peterborough.

So it's not quite that simple. (-:
