So last week we had some clear skies and cold nights. I did some photos with my Dwarfiii, this one is Ptolemy's Cluster, with a little editing in Snapseed.
Later I will show you how I went with the new stackable mosaic capability we have now with this telescope.

Over three nights last week, I shot #M17 over for a total of just over 8 hours.
This #Nebula is known as the #SwanNebula aka the #OmegaNebula aka #LobsterNebula aka #CheckmarkNebula aaaand #NGC6618, which is far, far too many names. Please do me a favour, and don't add to them.
For some reason, my telescope has decided that it is also #IC4701 aka #SH2-44 , but that is actually the fainter, sparser nebula in the top left.
In any event, this rich star forming region also contains several open clusters - #NGC6618 is embedded in M17, but #NGC6596 is in the foreground of SH2-44, and is not part of the star forming region.
Many of the stars are very hot fast burning stars, and they brightly illuminate the clouds of gas and dust.
Shot on a #Dwarf3 with the inbuilt Ha/OIII filter. Postprocessing in #Dwarflab Stellar Studio and #Snapseed .

Very early this morning, just after my night's schedule had completed, there was still some dark sky. So I had a look around in #Stellarium, and found a comet in the far Western sky - 10P/Tempel . So I did a quick stack of it with my #Dwarf3 , and this was the result. One #musktrail , but I thought I'd leave it in in this case.
10/P Tempel is one of the Jupiter family of comets, and has a period of only 5.4 years, so we get to see it quite often. Because it does not get particularly close to the sun, we don't get to see much of tail, but we do get the neat fuzzy green of the excited gases around the nucleus.

Here’s our itty-bitty cookie bite of a solar eclipse in New York at 9.5 percent maximum coverage. I’ll post some pictures in the comments showing the progression. Looking forward to seeing the photos of totality from Europe!

“Heraufschauen” (Look up)
Since I recently did some astro imaging with my Dwarf 3 telescope on a friend’s rooftop, this might be a good chance to share! This is the North America Nebula, named for the continent it resembles. It’s an emission nebula of ionized gases that stretches 90 light years north to south, and lies at a distance of 2,590 light years from Earth. Not a bad view for extremely light-polluted Brooklyn.

Something a little different today.
This is the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud, or #m24
What it is really is a gap in the dust of The Great Rift, and looks into the next spiral arm inwards from us.

“We don’t make mistakes, just happy little accidents.” — Bob Ross
Appropriately for last night’s full moon, which is known in some Indigenous communities as the Leaf Moon (Comanche), the Full Leaf Moon (Assiniboine) and the Moon When Leaves Come Out (Cree), here’s a happy accident I captured with my Dwarf 3 telescope. Details on how I “achieved” this are in the alt text. Turned out unexpectedly lovely, I think!😅

I had me a little play with the mosaic function for my Astronomy Group's target of the month earlier, the Lagoon Nebula, with a bonus Trifid Nebula thrown in there as well. Only about an hour's exposure, with these bright objects.

Cold and crisp, and long winter solstice time nights have made for great observation times here in #PerthWesternAustralia . So now that it's come over all cloudy and rainy it's time to do some processing.
I have been catching a couple of snippets of things at the end of a longer project, and this is one of them. The Lagoon Nebula says hi!
Just 55 minutes.

Pennsylvania skies, 11.
Still learning my way around my Dwarf 3 telescope, which I recently took with me on a trip to Lancaster County in hopes of seeing dark skies. This is M101, the Pinwheel Galaxy, about 21 million light years away. With limited exposure time and intermittent clouds, this was the best I could do, but I’ll keep trying for sharper pictures.

Making the most of the last night before the rain sets in, I decided to shoot a mosaic of the Lobster and the Cat's Paw nebulae. Six and a half hours total time, or about 1hr 35m for each corner.
This is a favourite subject of mine, and I never tire of it. Even if the lobster looks more like a crab to me.
Postprocessing in DwarfLab Stellar Studio and Snapseed.

Last night I tried something a little different.
I got my #Dwarf2 out, and ran a couple of sessions on the #LagoonNebula ( #M8 ).
The first was in the near-infrared, using a SVBony IR pass filter.
The second, slightly shorter one, was in unfiltered RGB.
Then I shifted the IR image to a green tone, and layered the two images on top of each other.
I am rather pleased with the results. I did not use the #Dwarf3 for this, as I only have a 1.25" IR filter.

Bode's Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy
May 2026Quite a bit different from my usual #SilentSunday photos. Taken with my new Dwarf 3 astrophotography telescope over three nights during last month's camping trip to #Colorado
