  1. Result of first attempt at a shot of the Milky Way from my garden last night. Can ony see a small portion of the arc, some gas clouds visible. Will keep trying this for a few nights, weather permitting. #astrophotography #dwarf3

  2. Trying my first shot of the Milky Way with the #Dwarf3. Even on wide angle I’m just getting some of the sweep. Let’s see what it looks like by morning when it’s stacked up a thousand shots. #astrophotography

  3. So last night was our usual Friday night RPG session, this time with @leece GMing. In honour of #Mermay we are playing a bunch of #mermaid police constables in a magical Victorian London.

While we were gaming, though, our #Dwarf3 #SmartTelescope s were beavering away at the comet #C2025r3panstarrs , which has just invaded the foot of #Orion .

Here is the result of one of the shots. Post processing in Stellar Studio and #Snapseed .

  9. In honor of #InternationalDarkSkyWeek, here’s my first attempt at imaging M81 (Bode’s Galaxy, bottom) and M82 (the Cigar Galaxy, top), both 12 million light years away. Not the best capture, as I’m still figuring out the nuances of my Dwarf 3 scope, but I wanted to share. In the wake of Artemis II, may we come to a deeper appreciation of the staggering beauty of the universe out there, and preserve our night skies so we can see it.

  10. I've had the telescope out for the last few days before the cloud has come in. This month's target from #AstronomyGroupOfWesternAustralia is The Statue of Liberty #nebula

I went a different path with the editing because I was struck with the sheer volume of stars in the area and didn't want dampen them down. So I left most of them in and upped the colour because I thought it looked cool.

  12. So the challenge from my Astronomy club for us this month is The Rosette Nebula, Caldwell 49 or NGC 2237.

This is a bit of a rough cut - I've not seen it done with an OIII SII filter before, and I'd like to add some more frames. Thanks to @rdm for lending me the filter!

  18. Three views of tonight’s full moon: a composite (1) combining the details of a Dwarf 3 capture (2) with some of the glow of an image from a Celestron reflector scope (3).

March’s Worm Moon is also known as the Warming Moon (Shoshone), the Spring Moon (Passamaquoddy), and the Moon of the Whispering Wind (Hopi). In a few hours it will also be a Blood Moon, in the last lunar eclipse until 2028. Fingers crossed I can capture it.

  19. Well, I put the telescope out last night and targeted the Keyhole Nebula. Now, I don't know about you but this looks like Great A'Tuin, Sir Terry's marvelous astrochelonian, is checking on a star cluster nest of eggs.

May Sir Terry rest in peace and know that he's loved. I met him a few times, a wonderful soul he lit up a room like a gentle nebula himself!

  20. I rode this image into dangerous territory last night, because I ran out of space in the telescope, oops, but still it turned out pretty well. Remind me to clear off the scope this arvo!

The first time I processed the image it was pretty bright, it didn't look very natural, so I did this version. I might post the lurid one later.

So who's ready to see the Carina Nebula I did a couple of nights ago after this? Only an hour or so but you'll get to see us Southern Hemisphere types' consolation prize for not having a pole star.

This is Caldwell 96, and it looks more to me like The Sprinter than the Southern Beehive. Its two big red giants are pretty clear.

  24. It is nearly #Christmas , so here is a very seasonally appropriate target.

#NGC2264 is comprised of two parts - there is the #ConeNebula , which is a #DarkNebula , and the accompanying #ChristmasTreeCluster . For us here in #Australia this is a #Summer complex - appearing for us in the lead up to Christmas itself.

This is a two and half hour exposure, or 150 frames, at 60s/frame, gain 80, using the inbuilt Ha/OIII filter, shot on a #Dwarf3 #SmartTelescope .

  30. Last night was surprisingly successful for #astrophotography. I shot five targets, and got good results for three of them. The fifth ... I'll add its data to my previous sessions later.

First up was the #Moon. At about 3/4 full, it is now a major issue for many targets, but makes for a great image itself, as the surface is mostly visible, but still has the sun hitting at an angle, so we get great shadows.

    Second was the #TarantulaNebula , aka #C103 or #NGC2070 .

Next up was a bit of an experiment - #Orion 's Belt. This was a roughly 1 hour mosaic, and I am pretty pleased with how it has come out.

Last for the evening was the #BeehiveCluster or #M44. I don't often shoot clusters, but I thought this was in a good position. Sadly there is no nebulosity associated with it. Despite this, it has come up looking very pretty.

Here is a little collage of the evenings shots.

  31. Over the past few nights we've been shooting #C70 aka #NGC300. This spiral #Galaxy in #Sculptor used to be classed as part of the Sculptor Group, but recent research places is much closer to us, and independent of that group.

It is a rather pretty galaxy, particularly as it is almost face-on to us, giving a lovely view of the arms.

This was shot over two nights, 6:30hrs of usable data, at gain 60, with the basic 'astro' filter, using a #Dwarf3 .

  32. This morning, as I emerge from a week of HMPV (a respiratory illness), I have an unusual (for me) treat.

Last night, while I slept, I had my #Dwarf3 up on the patio roof just outside the door to the games room I am isolating in. The games room is elevated, so the patio roof is at eye level. This makes it perfect for putting the telescope on, and then crawling into bed. The downside is that the field of view is quite limited, as the games room roof overhangs the patio roof by a goodly amount.

But the view to the North and East is not bad. And it turns out that, while Andromeda is blocked by the houses next door, #M33 is not.

Now here in Perth, it does not get very far above the horizon at the best of times, but last night I managed to snag an hour and a half of it.

(Edited to include what I've been sick with.)

    So here we are: The #TriangulumGalaxy , Dwarf3 #SmartTelescope . Postprocessed in the #DwarfLab #StellarStudio, #Snapseed, and #GooglePhotos

  33. For my second target last night, I revisited another old friend - the Sculptor Galaxy, aka The Silver Dollar, aka C65, aka NGC253.

This is amongst the largest of the spiral galaxies that can be seen from the Southern Hemisphere, and is a favourite of mine. This is nearly 5 hours exposure, gain 80, with just a light pollution filter on my Dwarf3. Postprocessing as usual in Snapseed after running through the in-app Stellar Studio tools.

  34. This evening's first target was going to be a mosaic of two nebulae. Alas, I got the framing a little off, and I ended up with 1 1/2 nebulae. At the top is half of the Eagle Nebula (M16), and down the bottom is M17, The Swan/Omega/Check mark/Horseshoe nebula.

In between them are a cluster and two smaller nebulae.

    3 hours and 10 minutes, in 60s frames, @80 with a Ha/OIII filter.

  35. Last night was an interesting one for astrophotography. According to the forecasts, we were to expect about 2 hours of clear skies, and right on schedule, a mass of cloud came in from the North-West. Unexpectedly, it then slid off to the South-West, and vanished. We then spent the rest night nervously picking new targets and waiting for the cloud to return. Which it did at about 4AM.

So this was one night where having the ability to schedule our shoots was utterly useless to us.

That said, we are in Bortle 2/3 skies here, and with a new moon we had a chance to go for some things that lose a lot of detail in the suburbs, even with a smart telescope.

One of those for me was the Tarantula Nebula, aka 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

This is a truly massive star forming region - don't forget that the LMC is a companion galaxy to ours - so it is really far away compared to other similar objects we can discern. As it is, it is 2/3 degree by 1/2 degree in size for us, making it a massive 200-570 parsecs across at the estimated distance of 49 Kpc .

It is also insanely bright - if it was the same distance as the Orion Nebula, it would be as bright as a full moon!

Anyways, I got 83 minutes with the Ha/OIII filter on the Dwarf3, post processed in Stellar Studio and Snapseed.

This is something a little different to my usual fare. This is a photo that I cannot post, and cannot even upload to Google Photos.

It is a 136MB JPG, roughly 61000x5400px in size, constructed from 20x3 subframes from my #Dwarf3, and stitched using the on-board cloud service in seconds. I could go to 60x30 frames, for a truely huge image.

  37. Towards the end of last night I decided to shoot M45 - The Pleiades. For me this is a very special cluster because it has almost the same story associated with it across the entire world. Almost everywhere in the world it is some variation on seven sisters being chased by a man (Orion). This consistency is unique in the myths and stories associated with the stars, and the sort of thing that makes amateur cultural anthropologists overly excited.

Here I have used two similar telescopes, but with different filters. The blue one was shot using a basic light pollution filter, and the green with an Ha/OIII filter. The overall exposures are similar (50-59minutes), and the post-processing is similar. The green one was shot on a #DwarfII, and the blue on a #Dwarf3.

The different orientations are because I had packed up the DwarfII, expecting clouds that had appeared earlier to build up, whereas what actually happened was they dispersed. So I set it out again, but only in Alt/Az mode rather than EQ.

  38. Making the most of the new moon, and an unexpectedly clear sky (we had been expecting 30-50 percent cloud), I experimented with using the wide-angle lens of the #Dwarf3. This links to a lower resolution sensor, but the results of a 1 hour exposure were very pleasing.

This is part of the #MilkyWay - around #Saggitarius , and looked at the #GalacticCore . Sadly the massive dust clouds prevent us from seeing the core itself. Or at least in visible light. The #GLEAMsurvey created a stunning multiband view of the core in the radio spectrum, and that is quite something.

photos.app.goo.gl/jwEb8dbjZk2A here's an album of the last ClusterFudge I did, the video about it is here aus.social/@leece/114744657142

Several new objects were added to the LCF Catalogue that night. I am particularly fond of LCF 100-O and might give it a bit more attention, possibly even tonight.

That's one of the beauties of ClusterFudging - you can find interesting stuff and go back to have a more detailed look later.

Up to 107 LCF Objects now! Here's a link to the current state of play with the LCF Catalogue as it stands.

    drive.google.com/file/d/1FYHvs

Some of them haven't really been post processed, some have in a fairly cursory fashion, but with ClusterFudging we all know it's the quantity, not the quality when you're showing off a big ClusterFudge.

  40. Next, on the #Dwarf3 I targeted the same thing - #C63 again, but this time with an #OIII / #SII dualband filter.

The result is quite a surprise. I was not expecting the level of intensity in the outer layers. The H-a really wipes it out normally.

  41. Last night was the last night of clear weather for a week or so for us, so, despite the full moon, we popped the Dwarves up on the roof.

First up let's look at what I got the #DwarfII to do. I thought I'd revisit my old favourite, #C63 the #HelixNebula . What I got surprised me greatly.

Here is the same scene - about a fortnight apart - one shot on the #Dwarf3 and the other on the DwarfII. In both cases there is about 7 hours of exposure, at gain 80, and both are using a dualband #OIII / #HII filter.

Both were post processed in the #StellarStudio and finished in #Snapseed .

I am utterly amazed at just how good the Dwarf2 stands up. No, it is not as good as the Dwarf3, but it is still a solid image, and one I am very pleased with.
