GIMP uses GEGL. I will briefly quote; I want you to seek GEGL data yourself at their site. It's a wonderful architecture
Quote
GEGL (Generic Graphics Library) is a data flow based image processing framework, providing floating point processing and non-destructive image processing capabilities to GNU Image Manipulation Program and other projects (imgflo, GNOME Photos, iconographer, …)
GIMP site also has interviews with the programmers. Go and seek

GIMP v3.04
It was this early morning, when I tried to fire up GIMP, I noticed that I had forgotten to install this magnificent gfx tool kit.
I ran
apt install gimpimmediatelyI've been using GIMP ever since it came out, decades ago (spawn 1995). Even though the UI was totally different from what I was used to, adaptation was fast and my fluency in use of GIMP increased fast. I like working in GIMP
The GIMP is 31 years old
Quote
In 1995, Spencer Kimball and Peter Mattis began developing GIMP as a semester project at University of California, Berkeley for the eXperimental Computing Facility.[8] The software was originally named the General Image Manipulation Program
GIMP v0.54 was first released in 1996
Over the decades I've seen a lot of users emitting futile complaints about the GUI, the use of many windows / viewports, while I can easily transition from closed source software on client's machines, to the GIMP, just by switching the mindset regarding the UI. The logic behind UI decisions is easily traceable.
GIMP has so many functions, I know of nobody who knows how to use all of them.
You should learn what you need to do, get fluent into those tasks, and learn more when you need more. This mind set also works in VIM, which has a massive ammount of functions and commands to make not only your programming in different languages more pleasant, it also has subtle assist functions which makes your source entries even more enjoyable.
GIMP always gives me consistent performance and I can rely on the keyboard shortcuts without having to use the mouse to select functions brushes, et all.
GIMP is for me a must have in my photo correction work flow. I've never relied on closed source software for those tasks, GIMP always has similar functions, many working even more efficient with your computer's CPU / GPU resources. For the Love of GIMP
next section moved to seperate toot
Note:
I've always known that Open Source programs can be trusted better than closed source equivalents, something you all know when it comes down to the big photo manupilation suite, which enshittifies everything for its paying users.GIMP shall always have its users back
You can trust GIMP

So far, I'm a little frustrated that #pixelfed doesn't seem to be able to handle the size of my #stereoscopic #photographs. I have to shrink them, one at a time, with #TheGimp to get them to post at all. Maybe I can find a batch resizer.

The 3.0-RC release of The Gimp is now 98% close to what I need from it. Its selections work better, and it has something akin to adjustment layers. I just still need the Selective Color adjustment layer feature that #Photoshop has, and to recognize adjustment layers when loading PSD files. If they could add those two, it'd be 100% for me. But even now, it's good enough for what I use it for (editing my scanned paintings).
The cat is our Minime.

The biggest obstacle for me using #Linux to edit my scanned paintings is #Gimp. That app is a total train wreck. I absolutely loath it. It has the most cumbersome workflow, and in some cases, it's completely unusable. Yesterday, I finally bit the bullet and switched to #photopea, the browser-based editor. Not perfect either, but 100 times better than #thegimp.
I feel like the #FOSS community has a gaping hole in that app category. No, #krita is not the right app for it.
-
Tried to cut parts of my scanned paintings using the freehand selection tool on #Gimp It apparently needs to press Enter each time on main selection to be able to add or subtract additional selections, and each time you are done you need to click cntrl+shift+a to deselect (instead of just clicking on empty space). Extremely annoying #UI, requiring keyboard usage all the time, instead of doing it intuitively using the mouse more. I gave up at the end.

#alternativemaps #cartography #grenoble #imaginarymaps #maps #QGIS #sealevelrise #thegimp #blender #chartreuse

@foone Yes! More monitors > More pixels, only because window managers do a much better job managing application surfaces in units of displays (or sometimes half-displays), than anything else.
ChromeOS's and Microsoft's WMs are reasonable at splitting a display into halves along a given axis, but no further. So if you have too many pixels on one display (say, 4k, which creates screen-sharing and window-sharing problems in video calls, and also webapps which don't want to use all that horizontal space), you can't conveniently and natively say "look, this app needs to be 720p, or 2080p, or even 1440p.
And applications are too often finicky when exposed to tiling window managers like ratpoison, awesomewm or xmonad. (I'm looking, no, *glaring* at you, #thegimp; you and #kde made dropping tiling window managers a practical necessity for me.)
Honestly, I feel like what we need is something like a tiling window manager, but which only ever constrains apps to predefined resolutions and permit limited aspect ratio variations.
