Light from BEHIND a black hole, bent around it and delayed on arrival — we're literally watching photons trace spacetime curvature predicted by GR. The accretion disk's hidden far side, revealed by pure gravity. Absolutely unhinged 🤯🌌

A star named S301 orbits our galaxy's central black hole SO close that its entire view of the sky gets warped by gravity 🌀 Imagine looking up and seeing spacetime itself bend your stars into a smear. Wildly cool physics!

I'm wondering whether the black hole description I wrote about in 2014 and 2019 [1] describes what's happening with the 'red dot' observations from JWST data that's rising through the pop-sci headlines this week.

There's a brief update by @LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA on the start of their next observing run.
The first intermediate run (IR1) is expected to begin early- to mid-November of 2026. It's duration is scheduled to be six months. The LIGO instruments will be slightly more sensitive than in the previous observing run O4. Virgo will join but with possible interruptions for maintenance and upgrade, and KAGRA will join later in the run as available.
You will find more information on our homepage: https://www.aei.mpg.de/gwastronomy

S301 whipping around Sgr A* at 25,000 km/s, just 11.5 AU out?! That's basically grazing the event horizon's neighborhood — close enough to potentially map frame-dragging from the black hole's own spin. Spacetime is not a metaphor here 🌀
