  1. S301 is a very normal #star in a very unusual neighbourhood.

    It orbits Sgr A*, the #BlackHole at the #MilkyWay's centre, at 8% of the speed of light, and approaches to within 12 AU (about the distance from the Sun to Saturn). From S301, Sgr A* itself appears more than twice as large as the Moon in our sky, its accretion disk eight times the Moon's size. S301โ€™s sky twists, stars change hue, and local time proceeds nonlinearly.

  16. Overmassive black holes from the early Universe - too big for the galaxies that they inhabit.

    Super-Eddington accretion phase is defined by extreme (mass inflow) rates exceeding the so-called classical "Eddington Limit".

    It's like seeing a family walking down the street, and they have two six-foot teenagers, but they also have with them a six-foot-tall toddler. That's a bit of a problem. How did the toddler get so tall? And it's the same for supermassive black holes in the universe. How did they get so massive so quickly?

    It's a figure I made for my #thesis that shows the #relativistic emissivity pattern of an #accretion disc illumed by an off-axis hot X-ray corona around a spinning #blackhole

    The radial axis is logarithmic (up to 100 rg). The corona is located at 10 rg on the right. Labels are logarithms of emissivity.

    The curvature of spacetime is lensing the photons from the corona onto the innermost regions, and causes the spiral-like deformation from the frame-dragging effect.
