"Much like terrestrial restaurants, future space-based systems will need to address food’s path from source to table, but with far more stringent requirements. This means meeting nutritional goals, easily producing food-safe ingredients in space, recycling inedible biomass and waste, and offering a culinarily delicious and culturally diverse menu."

In controlled environments like vertical farms or greenhouses, using electricity to convert energy into light with LEDs is not the most efficient way because plants waste the majority of that energy. A professor of Chemical and Environmental Engineering has figured out a way to grow plants 🌱 in the dark. An electrolyzer turns #CO2 into acetate, and genetically engineered plants use that acetate to grow in the absence of light https://www.forbes.com/sites/dereknorman/2026/06/11/the-moonshot-to-grow-food-in-space/

If you went to the Moon, what would be on the menu? The story of food in space is a fascinating journey of innovation, survival, and human ingenuity. From meat paste squeezed from tubes to lettuce grown in orbit, the quest to feed astronauts has come a long way—and one day, crops may help sustain communities beyond Earth.

Got some interesting food to try out. I have not been impressed with a number brands in the past, but these are some other brands from Europe, with the ex eption of Space Food, which is from the USA.
I once tried a bit of freeze dried ice icream, so quite excited to have been able to get some from an EU shop. It reckon if I can take one pack on 5-day trail, it could do as interesting snack in the late afternoon for one or two days.
There are a number of other deserts in here, because on a multi-day trip, I like to treat myself to one dessert. The Creme Catalana is definitely a novel item.
As to food, the three brands are Adventure Foods (NL), Tent Meals (UK) and Lyo (PL).
I am definitely interested to see if the bobotie will taste anything like the traditional food I know.
The two meals from Tent Meals are interesting, as they are the eat-in-a-packet kind. It makes for smaller packages, but means rehydration needs to happen in a pot. It makes me wonder if I should make up some pot cozy for my MSR Titan kettle.

Debugging your dinner? Apparently, future astronauts might be fueled by protein made from scratch, literally out of the air. No more 'It works on my machine' excuses for your space rations. Seriously, what's the weirdest thing you've ever had for dinner?

Bioprinting of muscle tissue at #Reutlingen University : A variety of plant-based 🌱 or bacterial 🦠 source materials exist that can be utilized for the bioprinting of #Cultured Meat 🥩. The biomaterial should be edible, with a pleasant texture and taste, non-allergenic, as well as preferably sustainable and cost-effective.
