What Does It Mean to Awaken in a Broken World?

The Knight Shamans are more than mystics in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Their journey begins with a question: what happens when people awaken to themselves, to the spirit world, and to the responsibilities of rebuilding society?

In The Apocrypha of the Knight Shamans, awakening is never a single moment. It is a process—a difficult movement from inherited assumptions toward a deeper understanding of self, community, and the unseen forces shaping both.

The world of the series has already been shattered by earthquakes, political conflict, social collapse, and forgotten dangers. Yet the books are not only about surviving catastrophe. They ask what survivors do next. When roads, institutions, and familiar rules disappear, people must decide which parts of the old world deserve to be restored and which should be left behind.

The inner awakening
A Knight Shaman must first awaken the spirit society has buried beneath programming, fear, and cultural expectations. That awakening is personal, but it is never merely private. Rodney’s ability to see the spirits of the dead, Peter’s emerging shamanic talent, and Justin Earl Knight’s struggles with his own demons all reveal different paths toward self-knowledge.

These characters do not receive simple answers. Their gifts come with obligations. To see more clearly is also to carry more responsibility. Our galleries were filling up with thousands of Ultors and a few hundred avatars. We had thousands of spare Petisols, each good for 5kW steady electrical output, packed and ready for shipment. Larger variants were starting limited production. On the surface we were accumulating empty sea cans, ready to ship Ultors around the world.

We started installing the Petisol reactors in the robots as each came off the line, with enough left over to retrofit the Ultors coming in from Barbarobo. Floyd and his crew even had sent us a few avatars, so MIke was able to have a physical body presence in all critical areas. The avatars were becoming a common sight around Goderich, acting as a very effective PR interface with the public.

The Petisol manufacturing line took a bit longer because we had to order injection casting machines and have the custom moulds made. Once the manufacturing machines were working properly, the Petisol production line soon outpaced all the robot lines put together.
