My friend is making this adorable little #MMX spacecraft! The propulsion module (the top section) detaches, which will genuinely happen once we enter Mars orbit to save on weight. The sample return capsule at the front can also be removed, to bring our Phobos sample safely back to Earth 🤩

This #MMXTeamQQ is by Stephan Ulamec at DLR, who describes the biggest challenge for the Martian Moons rover, IDEFIX! Jointly developed by Germany (DLR) and France (CNES) for JAXA's #MMX mission, IDEFIX will be the first ever explorer of the surface of Phobos (and yes, it's named for the 🐶).
If you're at the Berlin Air Show this week (#ILA2026), then do check out the DLR booth, as I'm fairly sure they have an IDEFIX display!

Like the Hayabusa2 mission,
which explored and returned samples from an asteroid,
#MMX will investigate the Martian moons -- and return a sample from Phobos to Earth.The mission is scheduled for launch in JFY 2026, followed by an approximately five year journey for the round-trip to the Martian sphere and exploration of the system.
MMX aims to collect more than 10g of material from Phobos, making this the world's first sample return mission from the Mars region.

We’ve a new camera in the #MMX Mission Project (for Earth-based outreach, not Mars-based moons). It’s got a gimbal for stabilisation although if I were STRICTLY honest, I’d say that the old camera balanced on an empty box on my office sink was more stable for basically stationary shots 😂
