This #MMXTeamQQ is by Stephan Ulamec at DLR, who describes the biggest challenge for the Martian Moons rover, IDEFIX! Jointly developed by Germany (DLR) and France (CNES) for JAXA's #MMX mission, IDEFIX will be the first ever explorer of the surface of Phobos (and yes, it's named for the 🐶).
If you're at the Berlin Air Show this week (#ILA2026), then do check out the DLR booth, as I'm fairly sure they have an IDEFIX display!

I am giving a tour today of the shiny new #MMX control room!
But.
It’s too new for my keycard to unlock, and my colleagues wussed out and are teleworking. We have one hour to bust me in or I’m using the audience for an improve recreation of the room layout in the corridor.
Look like a monitor.

We've started a mini video series for the #JAXA Martian Moons eXploration #MMX mission (#MMXTeamQQ) where team members are hunted down, shot with a camera, and made to hand over 1 mission fact! 🛰️
Facts produced under such pressure have been technical to whimsical. Officially published by the mission account on the evil site, but here's our first video with our Project Manager, Kawakatsu Yasuhiro.

🇯🇵 #MMX will launch* in 📆 2026 and enter #Mars 🔴 orbit a year later. It will deploy a small #German and #French-built rover which will travel around #Phobos for at least 100 days. Once MMX collects its samples, it will lift off, leave Mars in 2030 and return to Earth in 2031 https://www.planetary.org/space-missions/mmx
* 🚀 no earlier than October https://nextspaceflight.com/launches/details/4361/

Like the Hayabusa2 mission,
which explored and returned samples from an asteroid,
#MMX will investigate the Martian moons -- and return a sample from Phobos to Earth.The mission is scheduled for launch in JFY 2026, followed by an approximately five year journey for the round-trip to the Martian sphere and exploration of the system.
MMX aims to collect more than 10g of material from Phobos, making this the world's first sample return mission from the Mars region.

I have a small stack of #MMX stickers.
And I'm in a room full of laptops whose owners are getting a cup of coffee.
Is it my duty — nay, OBLIGATION — to bring those two together?
