This #MMXTeamQQ is by Stephan Ulamec at DLR, who describes the biggest challenge for the Martian Moons rover, IDEFIX! Jointly developed by Germany (DLR) and France (CNES) for JAXA's #MMX mission, IDEFIX will be the first ever explorer of the surface of Phobos (and yes, it's named for the 🐶).
If you're at the Berlin Air Show this week (#ILA2026), then do check out the DLR booth, as I'm fairly sure they have an IDEFIX display!

I am giving a tour today of the shiny new #MMX control room!
But.
It’s too new for my keycard to unlock, and my colleagues wussed out and are teleworking. We have one hour to bust me in or I’m using the audience for an improve recreation of the room layout in the corridor.

We've started a mini video series for the #JAXA Martian Moons eXploration #MMX mission (#MMXTeamQQ) where team members are hunted down, shot with a camera, and made to hand over 1 mission fact! 🛰️

We’ve a new camera in the #MMX Mission Project (for Earth-based outreach, not Mars-based moons). It’s got a gimbal for stabilisation although if I were STRICTLY honest, I’d say that the old camera balanced on an empty box on my office sink was more stable for basically stationary shots 😂

My favourite instrument onboard the #MMX Martian moons mission is… IREM.
Not only will IREM measure the radiation environment around Phobos and Deimos for the safely of a future human crew, but the team were the only Japan group to respond to my request for a quick outreach Q&A.
And we’re Japan-led 🤨😅

It’s the all-hands #MMX meeting from tomorrow, which means a crazy week of late nights on campus. I didn’t have a chance to go to #Nokucheese but remembered @JasonTrue had uber eats! So a loaf of bread and slice of focaccia arrived at my door with an extra scone thrown in for luck!
