How much faster than Voyager 1 do you think humans could make a similar mass probe? Voyager was slungshot around Jupiter and Saturn... could we take a mission closer to pick up more energy or swing it back and do a second, third, fourth pass?
Is there an upper limit? I don't think friction is an issue.
Fun note, Voyager 2 got a third gravitational assist from Uranus and was going faster but they slowed it down using Neptune to get close to the moon Triton.

After 48 years, 11 months, 4 days, 22 hours, and 35 minutes, Voyager 1 is approximately 25.6 billion km (15.9 billion miles) from the Earth.
That's 171.012 au or, at the speed of light, 23h 42m 15s.
From the Sun, Voyager 1 is approximately 25.6 billion km (15.9 billion miles or 171.415 au.)
Velocity relative to the Earth is about 37 km/sec (~84,719 mph); to the Sun about 16 km/sec (~37,763 mph.)
Voyager 1's position has been updated via NASA's new JSON information.
raw numbers:
earth distance: 25,583,064,861 km | 15,896,579,456 miles
earth velocity: 37.87298 km/s | 23.53318 mile/sec | 84719.44 mph
sun distance: 25,643,285,462 km | 15,933,998,803 miles
sun velocity: 16.88196 km/s | 10.48996 mile/sec | 37763.86 mph

Corrections have been applied and both @voyager1 and @voyager2 should have (more) correct distances from tomorrow.
Also added the light-time to their profile descriptions because why not.
Horribly (and I mean HORRIBLY) crufty code at https://git.rjp.is/rjp/voyagers if anyone is interested.

NASA have put up new Voyager 1 and 2 JSON data files. I'll update the base information for the @voyager1 and @voyager2 bots some time this weekend and tweak the daily updates to extrapolate from those (with a weekly update) instead of the BSP files (which seem to be lagging badly.)
