  1. Ammonia Ice Clouds on Jupiter

The top cloud layer on Jupiter is thought to consist of ammonia ice, but most of that ammonia hides from spectrometers. It does not absorb light in the same way ammonia does.

The second image is a magnified view of the first and shows the overexposed disk of Jupiter and faint images of its four Galilean moons: Ganymede, Europa, Callisto, and Io. (Third graphic is from planetarium sky simulation software.)

  7. Jupiter radius (Planetary science 🪐)

The Jupiter radius or Jovian radius has a value of 71,492 km, or of 11.2 Earth radii. The Jupiter radius is a unit of length used in astronomy to describe the radii of large planets and certain exoplanets. It is also used in describing certain stars, in particular brown dwarfs. The planet Jupiter has the approximate shape of an oblate spheroid, w...

  8. Saturday morning photography challenge: Jupiter and Mercury low in the east in morning twilight.

On the morning of 15 August, the planets Jupiter and Mercury will be close together. Their separation will be slightly more than the width of the moon.

You need an unobstructed view to the east.

But where exactly to look for them? The finder chart shows that the planets will be below the star Pollux...at least at my latitude of 33 degrees north.

If you live farther north the planets will be below the star Castor.

If you live in the southern hemisphere the planets will be below Procyon, but they will not rise until the sky is considerably brighter. This event favors the northern hemisphere.

    Clear skies and good luck!

  22. Europa, one of #Jupiter’s icy moons, long has fascinated scientists because of what may lie beneath its frozen shell: a global ocean of liquid #water.

That hidden ocean has made #Europa one of the most compelling places in the solar system to study the conditions that might support #life.

But a new study suggests one of the most promising shortcuts to Europa’s ocean may be far more complicated than previously thought.

Scientists used computer simulations to test whether liquid water from Europa’s deep ocean could rise through cracks in the ice and collect in shallow reservoirs closer to the surface.

Such reservoirs, if they exist, could be easier for future missions to detect or sample than the ocean buried far below.

But the results suggest that reservoirs of liquid water within the icy shell are probably not connected to the global ocean underneath, making it much harder to get samples from the ocean by future landers.

  32. The very young crescent moon, less than 24 hours old, and Jupiter in the evening sky. (Tuesday, 14 July)

This is a very heavily processed image to make these objects visible. (Edge detection algorithm and aggressive contrast boost.)

The crescent moon is right of center and Jupiter is left of center at about the same elevation.

I was lucky to capture this scene before low clouds interfered.

The second graphic is from planetarium sky simulation software. The third image, with a moderate contrast boost, is the original frame from which I derived the highly processed image. The crescent moon is barely visible.

I never saw the moon or Jupiter with my eyes, or on the camera's monitor screen. I was shooting blind, knowing what azimuth to aim at.

The sky was slightly smoky/hazy, but when shooting at objects so close to the horizon, in such bright twilight...that made things more challenging.
