Yesterday we visited the #Volkssternwarte #Köln ✨🔭 The weather was overcast, so conditions were limited, but we were still able to observe #Jupiter and its four #GalileanMoons #Io, #Europa, #Ganymede, and #Callisto.
The main #telescope is a 600 mm #Cassegrain reflector with a focal length of 5,400 mm, which enables high-magnification observations of #planets, the #Moon, double #stars, and bright planetary #nebulae.

Two views of Jupiter through my telescope last night, taken a few hours before its closest approach to Earth (393.3 million miles/632.9 million km). I was excited to see all four Galilean moons (Ganymede, Callisto, Io, and Europa) around it as well. Not the clearest images as I don’t have the best gear or viewing conditions in light-polluted Brooklyn, but they’re better than my first attempts, and I’ll keep trying to improve.

Combining astrometry and #JUICE - #EuropaClipper radio science to improve the ephemerides of the #GalileanMoons: https://arxiv.org/abs/2307.15966 -> "ground observations can fill the lack of radio science data for this specific moon [Io]. We obtained a noticeable solution improvement when exploiting the complementarity between all different observation sets. These promising simulation results thus motivate future efforts to achieve a global solution from actual JUICE and Clipper radio science data."

How did we name our planets and moons? On this episode, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice explain all the things you thought you knew about the names in our solar system, the origin of the moon, and the constellations in the night sky.
