I am not a sociologist; maybe I can reach someone who can give me pointers.

When a social phenomenon is reported more often in the present than it was in the past, there are principally two possible reasons:

1. It occurs more often.
2. It is reported more often (or was previously ignored altogether), and its actual prevalence is the same (or even less) than before.

What methods does social science employ to discern the two? And, are there other possible reasons?

When it comes to cooking, my spouse is a bit of a germophobe and tends to prefer a plastic cutting board that can be cleaned in the dishwasher. I am more of a microplasticphobe and thus prefer wooden cutting boards that I clean with hot water, soap, and a brush.

Whose phobia is more in line with the current state of science?

Any physicists around to answer me a silly question?

If α-radiation is Helium cores (two protons, two neutrons), β-radiation is electrons / positrons and γ-radiation is high-energy photons... it seems to me we skipped a step!

(Why) Is there no radioactive decay between α and β that emits just protons or neutrons? Do we know?
