  1. #GreenHydrogen production is, in effect, a way of bottling #renewable #energy. When the #wind blows harder than we need, that surplus #electricity is used to make #hydrogen. When the wind drops, stored hydrogen can be turned back into #electricity in a power station – doing the job #gas does today, but without the emissions or the imports.

  2. Empty #NorthSea oil fields could store enough #green #hydrogen to power the country for 7 years

Depleted oil & #gas fields can be refilled with hydrogen made from our surplus #wind & #solar power

Suitable depleted North Sea fields could provide 3,659 terawatt-hours of hydrogen storage, equivalent to more than 7 years of projected #UK #electricity demand in 2040. This could also take conventional gas power stations off the rid altogether by 2040 ...

  3. #Hydrogen would be a great clean fuel if it didn’t take more energy to make than it yields. Usually, the process to produce it uses methane, a greenhouse gas. Startup Eden GeoPower breaks open rocks using an electric pulse, then captures the released hydrogen. spectrum.ieee.org/stimulated-g...

  5. The next big thing in hydrogen may be hiding underground — geologists are hunting for ancient reserves
    technologyreview.com/2026/08/2
There’s a hunt for new sources of hydrogen, and the gas (or at least the right conditions to make it) could be hiding beneath our feet. Hydrogen can be used as a fuel in everything from large trucks…

  6. Interesting article about energy storage technologies and policies in the UK, essential for dealing with more renewables.

(The UK is also building nuclear, to help with winter.)

  8. Fluxys presses ahead with its hydrogen corridor despite having no industrial customers

L'Echo reported on 14 August that Fluxys is continuing work on its hydrogen network between the ports of Antwerp and Ghent despite losing important European financial support and having no contracts with industrial users.

  9. 'But even before that*, projects to make zero and low-carbon hydrogen were being canceled across the country as they struggled to bring down costs. “California’s hydrogen hype was already fading,” one analysis from BloombergNEF said, calling the West Coast industry “already dead.” '

But the hydrogen industry stays optimistic. 😇

  10. Green hydrogen projects tend to struggle beyond the laboratory. Case in point: recent setbacks involving Fortescue, bp and ArcelorMittal. So where can green hydrogen still build a viable business case?

thyssenkrupp nucera chooses to concentrate on alkaline water electrolysis, a commercially mature technology it already supplies at industrial scale.

  12. Progress is being made on a hydrogen gas turbine that uses detonation waves rather than a compressor to compress the fuel prior to combustion, therefore saving the 50% of power output that would be needed to run the compressor.

The experiment only ran for 5 minutes, though--detonations damage the combustion chamber.

This was presented at a conference last April; no peer-reviewed publication yet.

  13. #Gatwick Airport’s second runway can now be brought into full use after the High Court dismissed a legal challenge to the expansion, with permission to appeal also refused. The project is expected to create around 14,000 jobs and add £1 billion a year to the regional economy. From 2030, the extended Northern Runway is due to support an extra 100,000 flights annually, serving around 13 million more passengers and expanding on Gatwick’s existing network of more than 200 destinations. The #Government said all airport expansion must meet strict limits on air quality, carbon emissions and noise. It also highlighted £219 million for sustainable aviation fuel production and £43 million for #hydrogen and electric aircraft #technology to support lower-emission flying.

    3) Magic "light-activated nano-structured thin film" hydrogen storage

  16. The #UK #government has announced £7.3 million for eight projects to support the development of zero-emission #aviation, including hydrogen-powered #aircraft and electric planes that could be used for future air taxi services. Part of a wider £43 million investment in next-generation aviation technology, the funding will help develop airport infrastructure such as hydrogen storage and electric charging systems. Projects involving Beta Technologies and Vertical Aerospace will test how new aircraft can operate at commercial #airports. The government says the investment will support jobs, economic growth and its net zero by 2050 target. It follows further backing for #hydrogen research, drones, sustainable aviation fuel and aerospace innovation to help reduce emissions across the sector.
