Voyager 1 sendet mit 22 Watt - weniger als eine herkömmliche Glühbirne. Dennoch reicht es für Signale aus ueber 172 Astronomischen Einheiten. Einfach beeindruckend. #Voyager1 #Weltraum https://winfuture.de/news,158732.html?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=ManualStatus&utm_campaign=SocialMedia

RE: https://mastodon.social/@wawn/116471161392803995
This thing keeps impressing me even more each time I see an update!
Currently it takes 23 and a half hours for a signal from Earth to reach #Voyager1!
It takes 47 hours for #Nasa to get a reply!
Yet, they maintain control! They can still read the equipment on board!
That thing was yeeted into #Space all the way back in 1977 while I was still shitting my diapers in black and white! We both turn fifty next year!
If it can keep on going, then so can you and I!

The Little Probe That Could: Why #Voyager1 Matters, and Why #NASA Just Switched Part of It Off
#Spacecraft runs on a radioisotope thermoelectric generator — converts heat from plutonium into electricity. It has no solar panels, no batteries. Just the slow, steady release of nuclear warmth, diminishing 4W/yr. After 5 decades, thats become critical.
Voyager 1 now carries two operational #science instruments: one listens for plasma waves, and one measures magnetic fields.

Grund: Der RTG verliert pro Jahr rund 4 Watt. So bleiben Kernsysteme länger aktiv. #NASA #Voyager1 https://winfuture.de/news,158186.html?utm_source=Mastodon&utm_medium=ManualStatus&utm_campaign=SocialMedia

NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 to Keep Spacecraft Operating - NASA Science
> turned off the Low-energy Charged Particles experiment aboard Voyager 1

For me one of the greatest achievements of human engineering, Voyager 1.
Launched in 1977….

I remember when Voyager launched. The idea of exploration was planted deeply in our psyches.
It's an amazing thing, really. And it's being extended.
It's one of the few projects that was not heavily commoditized. It just observes and does science.
Project --;
No return.A beautiful thing still, I think.

nice little sim of Voyager 1 and 2 showing that Voyager 1 is now over 23 light hours away from Earth - by shuttling the simulation back and forth it looks like it will reach 1 light day around 2026-11-18T21:16:07+11:00 (but they claim they're working on making this estimate more accurate, so watch this space I guess) ... still, completely mind boggling that humanity has thrown something that far ... https://science.nasa.gov/mission/voyager/where-are-voyager-1-and-voyager-2-now/ #voyager1 #nasa #wherearetheynow

Voyager 1 Approaches One Light-Day from Earth
As it heads out of the solar system never to return, the deep space probe Voyager 1 is headed for yet another cosmic milestone. In late 2026, it will become the first spacecraft to travel so far that a radio signal from Earth takes 24 hours, or one light day, to reach it.

1 Light day away. To put things into perspective. The Sun is 8 minutes away. Truly incredible.
