  1. In Science News:

My postdoc, Luca Ighina, just published an analysis of a VERY FASCINATING high-redshift quasar. In short, not only is it radio-loud and ___the X-ray-brightest non-blazar at these redshifts___ it seems like it just might be super-Eddington!

    Press release here: chandra.si.edu/photo/2025/red6/

And, of course, this is a #ChandraXRay result!

  2. Discovery Awaits! Highlights of the upcoming #ChandraXRay Cycle 27 Science Program. From what makes Jupiter's aurorae glow to counting black holes at the dawn of time, there's lots of science to be excited about for #NASA's Flagship X-ray astrophysics mission!

(And this is a thing that I, personally, have been working on for a spell, so I'm super excited to see the document released).

  4. Chandra and Webb, powerful space telescopes, captured a breathtaking image of NGC 602, a cosmic wreath. Webb’s data reveals the wreath’s ring-like outline, while Chandra’s X-ray images illuminate it with the light of young, massive stars.
NGC 602, located on the outskirts of the Small Magellanic Cloud, is about 200,000 light-years away.

Let's talk about how We can increase funding for Science programs like:
    #NASA, #NASAJPL, #chandraxray

#NASAWebb was 7x oversubscribed by scientists in 2024.

    Science needs more funding!

  6. Fantastic imagery from the various space telescopes. The latest to celebrate the Chandra X-ray telescope's 25th anniversary.

My favourite has always been M16 (the Eagle Nebula) - first was the image from the Hubble, but every iteration since then has still held fascination for me...

  7. La mission est actuellement en prolongation de 3 ans de 2024 à 2027. Mais les opérations scientifiques de #ChandraXray pourraient être terminées plus tôt que prévues à cause de coupures de budget de la NASA.

  9. #OTD in 1999, the Space Shuttle Columbia lifted off with the heaviest payload ever sent to orbit on the STS -- the #ChandraXRay Observatory. Soon after, Chandra was deployed from the Cargo Bay and boosted to its final orbit via the final Shuttle-based launch of the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS).

  10. At #AAS244 and looking for something to do? Come to our booth and learn about the ongoing science we're doing, our outreach initiatives, how to become an X-ray astronomer (or pretend to be one convincingly!), and grab some great swag!

  11. I have a Love/Hate (mostly Hate) relationship with the Ars Technica comments section, particularly where space is concerned, but it's heartening to see this pro-#ChandraXRay comment sitting on 94 updoots to 0 downdoots on the Hubble Gyro article.

It has been a bit disheartening the past three months to worry about our healthy, productive, and unique mission being terminated abruptly, and so it's good to see the public is getting that message.

  12. In November, we asked the community:

Are there major initiatives for which the capabilities of @ChandraScience are absolutely required to address fundamental questions about our current understanding of the Universe that would represent a crucial missed opportunity if they are not completed during Chandra's lifetime?

The community responded, and we are pleased to announce two Chandra Legacy Programs

  13. That's No Moon!

Well, in this case it is. Back in 2003, #Saturn's moon Titan passed in front of the #CrabNebula. Chandra was on the spot, catching the transit as it happened. Astronomers were able to see the shadow cast by Titan, and used the size of that shadow to measure the extent of Titan's atmosphere.

A great result, demonstrating the power of the Dark Side!

  14. We recently released version 2.1 of the #ChandraXRay Source Catalog!

In short, everything we observed that was released publicly prior to the end of 2021 has been reduced, processed, and made available for easy consumption. With over 400,000 individual sources and covering 730 square degrees, the CSC opens the X-ray sky to all astronomers -- even if you've never looked at an X-ray photon before.

  15. Happy Earth Day! While the #ChandraXRay mission has observed sources near and far, we're one of a very limited set of astronomical observatories that has actively and intentionally observed Earth!

In the winter of 2003-2004, we observed the soft energy X-rays associated with the Northern Lights.

  17. For over two decades, NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory — humanity's most powerful telescope of its kind — has provided astronomers with a better understanding of the structure and evolution of the universe. But stringent spending caps could force NASA to shut it down. Futurism has more: flip.it/OaulLn

  18. I just learned that there's a movement because the Chandra X-ray Observatory might need saving from budget cutting.

  19. I just signed the #SaveChandra petition on savechandra.org for the reasons below. IMHO: #Chandra is up and running and until a substitute does the same or Chandra dies in orbit, I wouldn't change it (read about the "death spiral" in the link!)
I am not part of any #xray collab, my view is from the outside. But based on my work on #galaxyclusters #ChandraXRay has always been super helpful in understanding odd-looking cases and gaining new insights!

  20. One minute left before the #ChandraXray deadline ... Do I have time to start a new proposal?

  21. Paper day for everybody involved and excited about #eRosita ! Here is the paper by my Kostas Migkas and his colleagues who, for the first time, performed a robust cross-calibration of eROSITA vs Chandra and XMM using a large galaxy cluster sample. The findings are crucial for a wide range of future X-ray cluster studies, and future eROSITA data will further improve these constraints!

  22. What's a Christmas Tree without blinking lights?

The Christmas Tree cluster (NGC 2264) is host to a number of young stars that flicker in X-rays -- although not in the coordinated way shown below (that's just some Holiday fun!). Chandra observations of these X-ray variations are key to unwrapping the mysteries of stars!

  24. The Chandra X-ray Center (CXC) is pleased to announce that version 4.16 of CIAO ("Chandra Interactive Analysis of Observations") and version 4.11.0 of Chandra CALDB ("Calibration Database") are available for download from cxc.cfa.harvard.edu/ciao/downl .

  25. After 24 years exploring the X-ray Universe, the legacy of Chandra is secure; however, we want to also examine what scientific challenges remain for which the capabilities of Chandra are essential and would represent a crucial missed opportunity if they are not completed during Chandra's lifetime.

To that end, we have released a call for White Papers for our nominal 6 Ms Chandra Legacy Program. Details can be found here:
