A pair of #spacecraft draw closer to #Mercury after nearly decade-long voyage
If all goes well, the conjoined spacecraft known as #BepiColombo will enter orbit around Mercury in November and split from each other in December to map and study the entire planet from different altitudes. As of Thursday, the spacecraft still had 2 million miles (3.3 million km) to go before reaching its destination. BepiColombo already has traveled more than 6 billion miles (10 billion km)!

💁🏻♀️ TIL: 🚀🪐 The joint European and Japanese #BepiColombo mission is nearing #Mercury after traveling more than 9.6 billion km (~6 billion mi) over almost a decade.
Using nine planetary flybys to adjust its path, the #spacecraft is expected to enter orbit in November 2026 and begin scientific operations in spring #2027, studying Mercury’s magnetic field, #geology, extreme temperatures, and icy #polar regions.

Surprise! The Mercury Planetary Orbiter of #BepiColombo phoned home 5 minutes early: the Bochum dish (at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKTeaeXVSS8 their live stream) saw a strong signal growing from 13:48:45 UTC - which, of course, was also seen by ESA where everyone is elated.

Die Abtrennung der beiden (noch verbundenen) #BepiColombo-Merkur-Orbiter vom Transfermodul sollte stattgefunden haben, und tatsächlich hat man in Bochum ein Verstummen des Funksignals im richtigen Moment beobachtet: https://bsky.app/profile/amsat-dl.org/post/3mumh2lupnk27 - in genau einer Stunde sollte es wiederkommen, wenn der ESA-Orbiter als quasi neues Raumschiff wieder hochgefahren ist. Auch im derzeit pausierenden ESA-Stream https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oC7lQngNG3o wird jetzt solch ein Spectrum-Analysator gezeigt, ohne Signal natürlich.

So far so good: as seen in the clip https://bsky.app/profile/amsat-dl.org/post/3mumh2lupnk27 loss of signal from #BepiColombo was at 12:11 UTC, just at the time of the planned MTM separation plus signal time.
