  7. In 2013, astronomers discovered a tiny object in our solar system with a ring like Saturn. Now, James Webb Space Telescope finds they are changing

  8. View from the top! The Lick Observatory is at 1,283m (4209 ft) above sea level

You can still see fire damage from a few years ago - we came perilously to losing this treasure!

  10. On Cloud 9: Have astronomers discovered the first starless galaxy?

  11. #VeraRubin #Telescope Begins Surveying Our Cosmos, the widest, deepest survey yet of the southern sky.
Telescope will drink in galaxies and stars, creating record of how objects streak, pulse and explode in our solar system and beyond.
#Astronomers expect data, known as Legacy Survey of Space and Time, to revolutionize knowledge of galaxy’s birth, invisible matter permeating cosmos, what shaped the universe into the structure it has today and more.

  12. A strange ‘chirp’ in a brilliant stellar blast points to a #magnetar
About a billion light-years away, an extraordinary stellar explosion lit up in the night sky. The blast, detected December 12, 2024, was some 30 times the brightness of a typical #supernova, putting it in a rare group of superluminous #supernovas. Now, #astronomers believe they know what made the explosion so bright — an extreme type of star called a magnetar.

  13. Giving a talk tonight for my #astronomical society

How many #astronomers do you know who are cool enough to rock #tattoos, 12 #piercings and a leather suit?

    #leather suit by Higgs Leathers
Shirt by RSVLTS - #Disney Fantasia "Night on Bald Mountain" 75th anniversary

For more information about the society visit msas.org.uk

The full talk will be broadcast on nomenloony.tv very soon.

My degree is in astrophysics by the way. Yes. I'm that nerd

  14. A double cosmic explosion could be the first known ‘#superkilonova
The blast may have come from a collision of tiny #neutronstars forged in a #supernova
#Astronomers have spotted a distant #star that seems to have exploded twice. U.S.-based Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, or #LIGO, and the Virgo detector in Italy detected ripples in spacetime coming from a pair of neutron stars merging about 1.8 billion light-years away.

  15. #BernieReim #Fundraiser update

    by Keith Launchbury
    Organizer, 8/21/2025

"This is a photo of Bernie sitting up and using a wheelchair yesterday. Today he is being discharged from the Rehabilitation hospital in Portland and he is moving into an assisted living center in Kennebunk. He enjoys having visitors as he continues his recovery process.

"He is very grateful to everyone of you who have donated to help him offset some of the medical expenses he has already incurred, and the towards the monthly cost of the assisted living facility."

  17. The #WhirlpoolGalaxy, Seen by #JWST

    universetoday.com/162955/the-w
The Whirlpool #Galaxy, aka #M51, is one of the most well-known objects in the night sky. It’s close enough and prominent in the northern sky that amateur #astronomers have shared stunning pictures of it for decades.

  18. An international team including #astronomers from the University of Turku reveals the origin of a #thermonuclear #supernova #explosion. Strong emission lines of #helium and the first detection of such a supernova in radio waves show that the exploding white dwarf #star had a #helium-rich companion.
