After dinner last night, I had some extended thoughts on Columbia Professor Emeritus of Modern Arab Studies Rashid Khalidi's decision to cancel his scheduled course this fall at Columbia (anti) University, so I wrote up a journal/opinion piece.
Needless to say, I agreed with his decision and think more professors at compromised collaborator universities around the country should be joining him. But this episode also says a lot about the way Swine Emperor Trump is conducting his war to seize control of American cultural institutions in both the public and private sectors, and repurpose them as organs of fascist propaganda devoted to the cult of Trump/cracker ethnonationalism.

"Still, if educators in America had either half a brain, or half a heart, a great many more university professors would be refusing to teach at institutions collaborating with a fascist regime to subvert truth, journalism, and scientific reality this fall. Professor Khalidi isn’t wrong when he points out that the suits running Columbia have allowed their university to be transformed into a militarized security zone, and a fascist propaganda machine that fundamentally inverts the role of educators in our society – an “anti-university” as the professor noted. Not only is it impossible for a genuine educator to function under those conditions, but even attempting to do so will likely result in open fascist collaboration with an increasingly Third Reich-esque Trump regime. Society has a term for people who only collaborated with the Third Reich to spread racist, eliminationist, antidemocratic propaganda for a paycheck; that term is “Nazi propagandists” and history doesn’t speak of them kindly."

Nel 1899 il sindaco di Gerusalemme, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, rimase molto colpito dalla richiesta del movimento sionista di creare in Palestina un focolare nazionale ebraico. Si decise a scrivere una lettera proprio al fondatore del sionismo, Theodor Herzl, e lo avvertì dei pericoli che si sarebbero presentati. Concluse la sua nota dicendo: «In nome di Dio, lasciate in pace la Palestina». È così che Rashid Khalidi, pronipote di al-Khalidi, inizia questa ampia storia, il primo resoconto generale del conflitto raccontato da una prospettiva esplicitamente palestinese. Attingendo a una grande quantità di materiali d’archivio e ai resoconti di generazioni di membri della sua famiglia – sindaci, giudici, studiosi, diplomatici e giornalisti – Khalidi ribalta le interpretazioni accettate del conflitto, che tendono, nella migliore delle ipotesi, a descrivere un tragico scontro tra due popoli che rivendicano lo stesso territorio. Un breve appunto solo per sottolineare quello che già il titolo di questo post suggerisce, anzi afferma frontalmente:
mai come oggi è indispensabile celebrare la memoria della Shoah, del genocidio ai danni dei milioni di innocenti di fede (o semplice nascita) ebraica, sterminati dal nazismo e dai suoi volenterosi carnefici, così come dallo stalinismo; e mai come oggi questa celebrazione è centrale, inaggirabile, per difendere la Shoah dai criminali sionisti che se ne appropriano impunemente e ne violentano il significato, mascherando la propria islamofobia e le proprie tensioni alla pulizia etnica da presunto ombrello contro l’antisemitismo. Ai fascisti criminali dell’apartheid, razzisti, assassini, suprematisti bianchi, colonizzatori ladri, riesce ancora (ma sempre meno spesso, spererei e direi) indossare senza alcun diritto le vesti della persecuzione reale degli ebrei nel Novecento per rendere “giustificabili” i 75 + 1 anni di pulizia etnica, furto di terre e risorse naturali, invasione, incendio di case e coltivazioni, divieto di pesca, imprigionamento immotivato, controllo poliziesco, tortura, stupro, sterminio di bambini, donne e uomini innocenti, deportazione, negazione di cibo acqua elettricità carburante medicine libertà di movimento, e in sostanza: il genocidio ai danni del popolo palestinese.
È dunque più che chiaro il senso di un appello a celebrare la giornata della memoria dedicata al popolo ebraico vittima in Europa dell’antisemitismo concretato in pogrom, ghetti, forni e annientamento, non disgiunta da – anzi strettamente legata alla – lotta contro il sionismo genocida che da prima del 1948, e mai come in questo ultimo anno e mezzo, ha progettato e sistematicamente attuato un analogo tentativo di umiliazione esilio deportazione distruzione completa degli abitanti di Palestina (non solo di fede islamica, aggiungo), in primis donne e bambini.

Quoting Joe Biden: "And I kept reminding my friend, and he is a friend, although we don't agree a whole lot lately, Bibi Netanyahu, that he has to find a way to accommodate the legitimate concerns of a large group of people called Palestinians, who have no place to live independently."
People. Not a “group of people”. But that’s the closest Biden can get. Despite that performative display of purchasing Rashid Khalidi's book, Biden's comment ignores the historical reality that while Christian Zionists cite biblical justifications for Israel's existence, its actual foundation lies in the same UN resolution that recognized the Palestinian right to statehood. This right is rooted in centuries of continuous Palestinian existence on their land, predating the arrival of Zionist settlers from Russia who sought their displacement.
