#palestine “organized Jewish terrorism”
Olmert:
[…] “If law enforcement authorities in Israel do not fulfil their duty, perhaps international legal authorities will do what is necessary to save the Palestinians and us from the criminal acts being committed by Jewish terrorists right in front of all our eyes.”.
These are not random hate crimes. Aided by the IDF, Israelis (settlers and security forces) have turned #pogroms against Palestinians into a vocational activity, as part of an intensifying, opportunistic ethnic cleansing campaign.

#Palestine / Israeli police kills 65-year-old Palestinian woman in occupied East Jerusalem
A 65-year-old Palestinian woman, Zahiya al-Obeidi, was shot dead in the head by Israeli police during operations in Shuafat refugee camp in East Jerusalem. She was brought to Shuafat checkpoint with penetrating injuries and no signs of life. Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances.
A police sniper shot last week two Palestinians in the al-Tur neighborhood - 12-year-old Iyas Ra'ad Abu Mafreh and his 21-year-old cousin Oudai Fadi Abu Juma. Police claimed they were involved in throwing fireworks and Molotov cocktails, but family members and eyewitnesses told #Haaretz they were standing on the street eating pizza with no disturbances in the area. Video footage obtained by Haaretz supports the family's account.
On the same day, soldiers shot dead 22-year-old Moataz Hajajleh in Walaja village near Jerusalem, claiming he pulled a knife and tried to stab them and steal their weapons. His family and village residents claim soldiers shot him without danger to themselves, after beating him and his relatives.

Anti-War Activism / We Refuse: Saying No to the Army in Israel [French]
A new book titled "Nous refusons. Dire non à l'armée en Israël" (We Refuse: Saying No to the Army in Israel) has been published by #Libertalia m.
It is a collection of testimonies and photographs of Israeli war and occupation resisters. The book is a follow-up to a previous work by Martin Barzilai, "Refuzniks," published in 2017, and includes personal stories of Israeli activists explaining their reasons for refusing military service.
The introduction was written by French-Israeli filmmaker Eyal Sivan.
We Refuse: Saying No to the Army in Israel
[…] « La chose la pire qui soit en Israël, à part être palestinien, c'est être un traître. » Eviatar Rubin a 22 ans.

When the photographer Martin Barzilai meets him for the first time two years ago, the Hamas terrorist attack and the Israeli response have not yet taken place. The young man, who lives in Haifa, is already determined: no question of doing his military service, no question of "participating in the Zionist occupation, in an apartheid regime." So he refuses to join the army. He will spend four months in prison for this. Then he will return to his militant activities: political demonstrations and support for Palestinian families evicted from their homes.https://editionslibertalia.com/catalogue/orient-xxi/martin-barzilai-nous-refusons

Quoting Imma Era: "The thought that Netanyahu is using our children as human shields in the face of his domestic challenges is shocking and contrary to what is required of the Prime Minister to do at this time... We will not agree that our children will be used as flak jackets for a government that has lost public trust."
Israel is violating the #ceasefire agreement, with Israeli media and social media trolls claiming the #Hamas repeatedly refused to release hostages. It's a pretext. #Hamas was willing to release all hostages under specific conditions: a complete cessation of hostilities, the release of prisoners, and guarantees for its survival.
The timing of the attack, many observers in Israel are suggesting, is driven by coalition considerations, including appeasing political factions, rather than a genuine strategy to defeat #Hamas. The offensive endangers hostages, reducing their chances of survival due to the consequences of #IDF bombings.
The organization "Imma Era" (Alert or awoken Mother), which unites mothers of female and male combat soldiers, stated that "returning to fighting less than a day after the announcement of the dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet raises serious questions about the timing of the decision. The thought that #Netanyahu is using our children as human shields in the face of his domestic challenges is shocking and contrary to what is required of the Prime Minister to do at this time. We will not agree that our children will be used as flak jackets for a government that has lost public trust."
Yair Golan, the chairman of the Democrats, stated that "the soldiers at the front and the hostages in Gaza are just pawns in Netanyahu's game of survival," as he fears public protest against the dismissal of the head of the Shin Bet.
Ben Gvir welcomed the return to fighting, saying that "this is the right and moral step," and Finance Minister Smotrich stated that the move had been planned in recent weeks, since the new Chief of Staff took office.

#Eurovision / Israel still allowed to maintain access to platforms of cultural diplomacy despite an ongoing genocide
Israel's strategic deployment of cultural representation in the face of allegations of genocide is relentless. While facing #ICJ investigation and scholarly condemnation of a genocide that has resulted in over 46,000 Palestinians deliberately and systematically murdered by the #IDF (using U.S.-supplied weaponry,) Israel's Eurovision participation—featuring a survivor of the October 7 attack—is attempting, once again, to instrumentalize personal victimhood in service of state legitimation.
It’s difficult to ignore the fact that this centering of Israeli suffering within international cultural forums occurs simultaneously with the systematic marginalization of Palestinian perspectives and experiences. The disproportionate media attention given to Israel's Eurovision candidacy, relative to, say, coverage of ongoing genocide in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, not to mention a brutal occupation, reflects broader patterns of narrative control that obscure accountability for actions against an occupied population.
As one Israeli commentator wrote, “the song written for her [Yuval Raphae] by Keren Peles lacks even a trace of originality and freshness, resembling something more on the level of a young talent night at an unpopular brasserie - and conveys an oppressive sense of extra effort to be appealing.[…] And if that doesn't help either, one can always say that the problem isn't the lyrics, the melody, the French, the clip, the Keren, or the Peles: in the end, everyone is antisemitic.

#Palestine / UN Chief Condemns Israeli Forces' raids on UNRWA schools in East Jerusalem
UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned raids by Israeli security forces and Jerusalem Municipality personnel on #UNRWA schools in occupied East Jerusalem. UNRWA officials reported that Israeli authorities attempted to enter three schools in Silwan, Wadi Joz, and Sur Baher, but school administrators prevented them. One school in Wadi Joz was temporarily closed, and students were sent home. There were also raids in Kalandia Training Centre.
UNRWA stated that tear gas and sound bombs were used.Hebrew https://zoha.org.il/135541/
UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini stated, "Children + young people in East Jerusalem [are] denied of their right to education in UNRWA schools." He added, "This is a violation of the basic right to education as well as of United Nations privileges & immunities." UNRWA affirmed its commitment to continue its mission despite the "policy of attack and persecution of the occupation."

#US / Harvard Divinity School administrators resign citing university's tolerance of anti-muslim bias and attacks on pro-Palestinian voices
Two administrators at Harvard Divinity School's Religion and Public Life program have resigned, citing the university's failure to address a hostile environment towards Muslims and those critical of Israel.
Hussein Rashid, the assistant dean, explicitly accused Harvard of tolerating racist and defamatory statements against the program, particularly from Jewish groups like Hillel and #Chabad.
[…] He cited as an example an Instagram post by Harvard Chabad, led by Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi, that said: “There are numerous Harvard academic centers that essentially function as Hamas or Palestinian embassies,” citing the Religion in Public Life center “in its entirety,” and concluding, “it’s stunning that there’s no call for some of these centers to be shut down or rebuilt in its entirety.”

#D9Bulldozers / Israeli military's use of weaponized bulldozers: from "No Other Land" to Rachel Corrie
[...] In the same breath, Trump promised to end the war in Gaza and return all the hostages, and also released 132 Caterpillar D-9 bulldozers – lethal weapons that Israel had requested. The Biden administration refused to supply these bulldozers because they were not informed of their exact intended use. The Trump administration waived the army's explanations, which mainly claimed that military bulldozers are needed for the 'war on terror': to clear areas dangerous to soldiers and to assist in dismantling booby-trapped buildings and explosive devices.
The Israeli military has a long-standing relationship with weaponized bulldozers, used since 1948 to displace Palestinians. The D-9 bulldozer, often used in the demolition of Palestinian homes, was notably involved in the death of activist Rachel Corrie in 2003. The film "No Other Land" documents the ongoing destruction of Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta, showcasing the use of bulldozers in what is described as a systematic expulsion program. Despite promises of a thorough investigation into Corrie's death, the Israeli military was cleared of responsibility, with the court ruling it a "regrettable accident".

#Europe / Far-Right leaders rally in Madrid, hail Trump, denounce Immigration and add the Likud as an observer member
European far-right leaders, including Hungarian Orban and France's Le Pen, praised #Trump at a "Patriots for Europe" summit in Madrid. The leaders railed against immigration and #wokism, while calling for a new #Reconquista. The event, hosted by Santiago Abascal of Spain's #Vox party, was held under the slogan "Make Europe Great Again".
Reuters failed to mention that Likud is now an "Observer Member" of the Patriots for Europe. #Likud aligning itself with European far-right and neo-fascist parties that are calling for a "Reconquista" is pretty strange, to say the least. You'd think they'd remember what that meant for #Jews not just #Muslims.

Quoting professor Avishai Ehrlich on Trump's "transfer" endorsement and the reshaping of global order:
[…] While Israelis are drawing comparisons between the condition of returned hostages and the 'Muselmann' in Nazi concentration camps [a derogatory term meaning “Muslim”, as in ‘barbaric’ or ‘fatalistic’], the world views what is happening in Gaza as genocide. Gazans will not leave voluntarily, and Trump will not transfer Gaza's population using the American military, nor through private military companies. Will the Israeli army once again destroy the ruins, bomb the survivors in refugee camps, and exterminate those who are starving? All of them? As Bialik [a poet] said: 'Vengeance like this, for the blood of a child, Satan has yet to devise.' How will we live afterward in the Middle East? How will we live in the world? How will we live with ourselves?
Ehrlich argues that Trump's support for the "transfer" (ethnic cleansing) of Palestinians from #Gaza is part of a broader shift in the global order. He connects this endorsement to the historical Zionist concept of transfer, noting that it has been a central idea since before #Israel's establishment and implemented through various expulsions and dispossessions. He contends that a military victory over #Hamas is impossible, and that the only way to obtain it is to get rid of the population.
Ehrlich is a professor of political sociology, and has extensively researched the Israeli-Arab conflict, arguing that Israeli society cannot be understood separately from the conflict, which he terms a "Permanent War society". He views the conflict through the lens of "world-systems" theory, where global power dynamics shape local conflicts. He also researches the concept of "Low Intensity Ethnic Cleansing," where administrative measures create conditions for mass migration, and the rise of Private Military Companies (PMCs), which erode state accountability and international law.

The police initially claimed the bookstore was selling books supporting terrorism, but the arrests were made under the less serious charge of "breach of public order," a tactic described as common when dealing with freedom of expression issues. The court extended the Munas' detention, despite the judge criticizing the police for not obtaining prior approval from the prosecutor's office, as required for charges related to "identification with a terrorist organization".
Family members and legal representatives assert the raid was a form of political persecution and an attempt to control knowledge, comparing it to historical book seizures. The bookstore, established in 1984, is a well-known institution in occupied East Jerusalem, frequented by international visitors.

#Palestine / Ground Invasion, Digital Invasion
"Ground Invasion, Digital Invasion," written by Tal Elkayam and Dr. Zohar Elmakias in Takriv ("an online magazine that brings Israeli documentary film to the table of discussion and critique"), explores the digital dimension of the war in Gaza, examining how the widespread use of social media platforms, particularly #TikTok, by the occupation soldiers has shaped the perception and understanding of the conflict. It questions the relationship between the physical actions of soldiers and the appropriation of space through videos.
[...] Each of these videos, and many others, are a variation on TikTok trends of the 'come with me' type. We accompany people on their journeys, both mundane and colossal. Making iced coffee, renovating a caravan, injecting hormones. Or, a person enters a place and discovers it, talking to the audience on the other side of the screen. Except here, the person is a soldier, the time is war, and the place is a battle zone, where the soldier skips from ruin to ruin under sniper fire. The desire to document oneself and broadcast it outwards as a guide to correct living, the toxic positivity of online spaces, takes on a parodic and cruel dimension here. The template is the same, the formal infrastructure, but poured into it is a nightmarish, apocalyptic content.
The paper explores the phenomenon of Israeli soldiers documenting their experiences in Gaza through social media platforms like TikTok, creating a new form of "digital invasion". This documentation, often mirroring popular internet trends, blurs the lines between warfare and entertainment, raising ethical questions about the representation of conflict. The article discusses how these videos contribute to a "digital pillage," where not only physical objects but also the reality itself becomes a form of spoil. It also examines the implications of experiencing war primarily through the perspective of the soldiers, referencing a South African lawyer at the Hague who stated that, for the first time in history, victims are broadcasting their own destruction in real time.
[...] What happens when the documentary is not produced in the artistic space but in the space of fighting and ruins, by the hands of the fighters? This has ethical-political and aesthetic-cinematic implications alike. On the ethical level, the average Israeli sees Gaza almost exclusively through the eyes of the soldier. In her latest book, dealing with the figure of the shell-shocked American soldier, anthropologist Nadia Abu El-Haj asks, what happens to war when the discussion of it, its perception and its representation are done mainly by soldiers who have returned home? The American public, she claims, now experiences the war mainly through the eyes of the soldier, that is, through an American national-imperial perspective. What does staying within and alongside war stories do to the possibility of political criticism? The war story seems to tell us, 'Surrender to the soldier's point of view!', and following this, 'the meaning of going to war and the meaning of 'knowing' what war is become one. The truth of the fighter becomes the truth of the war.' Israeli society during the current war demonstrates an even more extreme case. Every national society is a family, in a sense; the nation always uses the metaphor of family. In the Israeli public perception, the Israeli army, with its camaraderie and brotherhood of fighters, is like a family within a family (Israel) within a family (the Jewish people). Israeli familialism is not just a metaphor, but an appeal to the idea of common ancestors, that we are all their descendants. When we look at the war through the eyes of the soldier, these eyes are always understood by us as the eyes of brothers and sons; these are already collective eyes.
[...] What happens when the horror is designed and exposed through the perspective of the inflicting hand? Maimon refers, among other things, to Susan Sontag's article in the New York Times following the American soldiers who documented acts of abuse against prisoners in Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. In her book 'Regarding the Pain of Others,' Sontag established for us a central paradigm in thinking about photography and horror. In 2004, she wrote: 'The horror of what is shown in the photographs cannot be separated from the horror that they were taken.' Sontag speaks of the photograph-that-is-violence – from World War II, from the lynchings in the American South, from Abu Ghraib – as a souvenir 'taken by the photographer for purposes of collection, storage in albums, display.' The soldiers, she tells us, are photographers now, and they are documenting 'their war, their fun, their observations of what they perceive as picturesque, their acts of horror.'"

"It's an insult to intelligence to take Trump's off-the-cuff remarks seriously. He's a f***ing psychopath, and we're living in an age of advanced retardation. Netanyahu is indeed a conscienceless psychopath himself, but he's not stupid. Even he froze in discomfort when Trump spouted nonsense about evacuating Gaza as a favor, in the midst of the embarrassing praise Netanyahu heaped on him. As Levi Eshkol once said, 'No one ever got slapped for flattery.'"
Misgave criticizes Israeli politicians, including #Netanyahu and #Gantz, for entertaining the idea, and calls on the "sane, realistic" political camp to focus on pressing issues: returning hostages, preventing renewed fighting in Gaza, dismantling the current government, rehabilitating the Gaza envelope and the Galilee, and establishing a state commission of inquiry into Israel's strategic defeat. Misgave emphasizes that both Israelis and Palestinians are staying put. It's reality, not a reality show.

#Haaretz Editorial: Israel must oppose transfer, whether it's advocated by Rabbi Kahane or President Trump.
#Israel must reject the idea of transferring the Gazan population, regardless of whether it is proposed by figures like #Trump or Kahanists. The editorial insists that such proposals are unacceptable and should be opposed by Israel.
[...] In the Knesset, the serious concern about such a preposterous proposal was aptly expressed by United Arab List leader Mansour Abbas, who correctly pointed out that this isn't a political agenda but rather outdated, Kahanist thinking that normalizes the unacceptable.

[...] Opposition to using violence to conquer territory and empty it of its inhabitants must be an unwavering red line. The argument against displacement, especially from those who claim to be on the left and support human rights, should never have been solely about its impracticality (though that remains true). Rather, it must be rooted in the fundamental right of people to live in dignity, respect, and freedom from the fear of being driven from their land. These are the core lessons of World War II, the very foundation of the new global order that brought us peace and prosperity in the latter half of the 20th century.
Having failed to reject unequivocally the genocide in Gaza, why should Israel's "left" be trusted to oppose forced population transfer? Displacement is a war crime and a crime against humanity, regardless of framing, and is widely recognized as such outside the U.S.
Shanir criticizes the idea of transferring residents from #Gaza, acknowledging that #Trump's proposal has revealed a disturbing level of acceptance for such plans within the Israeli political spectrum, even among those who identify as left-wing. It shows that opposition to transfer thus far has been primarily pragmatic, rather than morally grounded. Shanir criticizes the silence of the Israeli opposition, arguing that opposing displacement should be a clear moral imperative, not just a matter of political expediency.
[...] While we may be grateful to Trump for his help in the recent hostage deal, this should not translate into support for his utterly unacceptable displacement plan. We reject a world where displacement is even considered an option. We oppose transfer because that is not the kind of world or country we want to live in. We must not jump on the bandwagon of #Kahanism just for short-term political gain with the White House. Trump won't be around to deal with the consequences of his words – we will.

Quoting David Issacharoff on how Israel is enabling far-right's Nazi history whitewashing:
[…] The far-right in Germany does not particularly favor Israel and doesn't necessarily feel historically obligated to ensure its existence, unlike mainstream German parties. However, Israel's silence towards them, coupled with the defense of figures like Elon Musk, is a critical step towards their full legitimization in Germany. Israel and its representatives in Germany are aware of this, yet by remaining silent regarding the rewriting and downplaying of Nazi history and #Holocaust memory, they are criminally abandoning the safety of German Jews who face concrete threats from increasingly powerful neo-Nazis.
According to Issacharoff, the Israeli government provides tacit support for #Germany's far-right #AfD party, which is attempting to whitewash Nazi history. While Elon Musk is actively aiding this effort by downplaying German guilt and platforming AfD leaders like Alice Weidel, who has made historically revisionist and antisemitic statements, #Netanyahu defends Musk and the Israeli embassy in Germany focuses on alleged Muslim and leftist antisemitism, contradicting German data that identifies the far-right as the primary source of antisemitism. This alignment serves mutual interests in demonizing Palestinians and undermining international law, but dangerously legitimizes neo-Nazis and endangers German Jews. What could go wrong?

#Palestine / Israeli lawyer files Incitement to Genocide case against top Israeli officials at ICC
Israeli lawyer (living in France) Omer Shatz has submitted a 170-page report to the International Criminal Court accusing eight prominent Israeli officials, including #Netanyahu and ex Defense Minister #Gallant, of incitement to genocide against Palestinians.
Focusing on statements from officials like Gallant referring to Palestinians as "human animals" and #Herzog's claim that "there are no innocents in Gaza," Shatz argues these constitute direct and public incitement, creating a climate where atrocities become permissible. He emphasizes that prosecuting incitement is crucial to prevent genocide, especially given the #ICJ's ruling indicating a plausible risk of genocide in #Gaza and Israel's failure to investigate incitement domestically.
[…] He believes that Israel's strategy to defend its actions in Gaza by referencing what Hamas did on October 7 backfired, since the attacks highlight a strong motive for retaliation. Courts can use this as evidence to establish intent.

#Egypt / Israeli Education Ministry revises curriculum to erase Egypt's peace overtures before October War (1973)
Israel's Ministry of Education has directed teachers to stop teaching that the October War was partly due to #Israel's rejection of Egyptian peace initiatives. The new curriculum, based on recent research, asserts that the war was solely Egypt's responsibility due to its demand for full Israeli withdrawal from Sinai and other occupied territories.
The directive dismisses the historical perspective that Israel ignored peace overtures from Egypt, a view supported by some historians who argue that Egyptian President Sadat sought peace negotiations as early as 1971, but was rebuffed by Israel. Critics argue this curriculum change is a politically motivated revision of history, ignoring evidence of Egypt's willingness to negotiate and placing sole blame for the war on Egypt.
[…] The Israeli Ministry of Education is portraying its new version of Yom Kippur War history as fact, based on historian [right winger] Yoav Gelber's research. However, this is a highly contested issue among historians, with many offering different interpretations. In contrast to the Ministry's view, journalist Amir Oren argues Israel and Prime Minister Golda Meir bear responsibility for not preventing the war. Oren considers it a "war of choice," stating Egyptian President Sadat sought peace with Israel since 1971 but was ignored due to Israel's refusal to withdraw from Sinai and parts of the West Bank for peace, as Oren wrote in a 2014 Haaretz article.
[…] Newly disclosed primary sources, including a 2023 Mossad publication commemorating the October War's 50th anniversary, indicate that Egypt considered diplomatic solutions before the conflict. According to the Mossad's account, while skeptical of diplomacy alone to reclaim territories lost in the Six-Day War, President Sadat initially explored political avenues. Intelligence from Ashraf Marwan, an Egyptian agent that Israel operated, revealed Sadat's communications with Soviet leaders in 1971, expressing Egypt's readiness for a settlement. However, facing political stagnation and fearing the entrenchment of the occupation, Egypt ultimately resorted to military action to break the deadlock.
[…] According to the instruction of the Inspectorate for History Studies, which will come into effect next school year, from now on "answers will not be accepted in the matriculation exams according to which Israel rejected Egyptian peace proposals before the outbreak of the war."

#Palestine / Yair Netanyahu (lazy, racist harasser) loses defamation appeal and pays more court costs
Yair Netanyahu, son of wanted war criminal Netanyahu, has lost his appeal against a ruling in favor of former Knesset member Stav Shaffir in a defamation case.
The court upheld the previous decision that Shaffir's statements calling Netanyahu "lazy," "racist," and "harasser" were truthful and factual. Netanyahu was ordered to pay an additional 7,500 NIS in legal expenses, adding to the 70,000 NIS he was already obligated to pay.
This legal battle originated from Netanyahu's lawsuit against Shaffir and her countersuit, following his offensive online remarks towards her and her descriptions of him. Despite appealing the initial verdict, Netanyahu withdrew his appeal after a judge's recommendation. He still has a separate, ongoing lawsuit against Shaffir.
[…] In response to Yair Netanyahu's appeal, Stav Shaffir argued for its dismissal, stating that the lower court was presented with evidence of Netanyahu's publications containing inaccuracies, racist posts that led to his Facebook account suspension, and disrespectful treatment of women, including misogyny and objectification. Shaffir further added that Netanyahu's behavior during court proceedings was notably disrespectful, citing instances where he called her a "bitch," arrived late, sat disrespectfully, repeatedly interrupted with insults, and was removed from the courtroom twice.

#Palestine / Human Rights groups challenge Israeli laws to halt UNRWA activities, citing humanitarian crisis
Human rights organizations #Adalah and #Gisha, alongside Palestinian refugees, have petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court to overturn two laws that would halt #UNRWA’s operations in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and #Gaza. The petitioners argue that the laws violate basic human rights and Israel’s international legal obligations, potentially causing a catastrophic humanitarian crisis by cutting off essential services like healthcare and education. Critics condemn the laws as part of a broader effort to erase Palestinian identity and rights, with some labeling them as potential war crimes under international law.
[…] The petition, submitted by Adalah’s Legal Director, Dr. Suhad Bishara, argues that the laws could silence UNRWA’s activities in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. This is because UNRWA requires extensive multi-system coordination with Israeli authorities to operate in these areas. This includes establishing administrative and logistical headquarters for the agency; issuing visas and work permits for its staff; coordinating with military authorities regarding the organization’s activities; arranging exemptions from customs, levies, and taxes; importing goods and equipment, including medicines; coordinating the entry and transfer of medicines and other essential supplies to various areas; licensing and registering the agency’s vehicle fleet; and coordinating operational systems during military operations. Such coordination is also necessary for the functioning of UNRWA’s humanitarian aid operations in Gaza during wartime.
MK Aida Touma-Suleiman:
[…] Those disgraceful proposers, who hinge their argument on October 7 as a defining event to justify their proposal, stood at this very podium even before that day and did not hide their desire to eliminate UNRWA, claiming that the agency keeps the issue of Palestinian refugees alive. Even before that date, they tried to attack UNRWA offices and seize the lands on which they sit, but they failed. Those who speak of a 3,000-year-old refugeehood cannot dismiss a 75-year-old refugeehood. No Palestinian wants to be a refugee. Do you truly want to end the refugee issue? Remove the boot of occupation from Palestinian land and allow Palestinians the right of return to their homeland,"

Quoting Historian Dr Eli Cook on "Shameless Capitalism", unrestrained plutocracy and doubts about long-term strength of the US against China: "Despite all the criticism I have of the Chinese Communist Party and the harsh exploitation of workers there, China has become a manufacturing superpower, and a huge one. And what does Trump produce? Virtual currencies."
In an interview, historian Dr. Eli Cook from the University of Haifa, discusses Donald Trump's presidency as embodying an era of blatant plutocracy, where the wealthy openly exert power without shame, a trend continuing since the 1980s but now without pretense. He points to Trump's wealth, the creation of $TRUMP Coin, and the swift alignment of major corporations as evidence.
Despite warnings from outgoing President Biden about this growing oligarchy, no significant opposition has emerged. Dr. Cook anticipates economic tensions with China, a new phase of nationalistic neo-liberalism, and raises concerns about potential imperialist conflicts arising from US-China rivalry, with regional implications including in the Middle East. He also questions the long-term strength of the US against China's manufacturing dominance.
Dr Eli Cook is an Assistant Professor of American history at Haifa University in Israel. An historian of American capitalism, his Harvard University Press book, The Pricing of Progress: Economic Indicators and the Capitalization of American Life, has been awarded two prizes for best book in intellectual history in 2017.

How dysfunctional is Netanyahu’s government?
National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir admitted #Netanyahu deliberately blocked a hostage deal for a year to keep his government intact. Ben Gvir boasted about preventing the deal, confirming accusations Netanyahu prioritized his political survival over the hostages' lives.
Haaretz editorial:
The fact that a senior government minister boasts about successfully derailing a deal for a whole year – while it is known that these failures cost the lives of dozens of hostages and many soldiers – more than anything indicates the decay that has spread within the country's leadership. It seems the Israeli media has reached a consensus: #Trump betrayed #Netanyahu. No, Israel… well, why not? Trump betrayed the Jewish people. All while liberal commentators in publications like Haaretz are positively gloating.
Rogel Alpher, ever the cynic, captures the profound disappointment and sense of betrayal felt by Israel's more fascistically inclined commentators. They're aghast that Trump seemingly facilitated a hostage deal, flying in the face of their conviction that he'd prioritize #Israel's hawkish stance (de facto genocide in #Gaza).
According to Alpher, this move has shaken the faith of those who genuinely believed Trump's ascent was divinely orchestrated to champion their political and theological viewpoints, with Israel at the center. The result? Accusations of betrayal and a rather amusing scramble to reassess their previously unwavering beliefs about Trump and the exceptional U.S.-Israel relationship.
[…] Trump was seen as destined to serve "Bibi-ism," sent to fulfill its goals. His election was considered proof of a divine, messianic plan. In this worldview, Jewish fascists in Israel are at the center of the world. Biden was portrayed as an antisemitic devil working for Hamas and the rest of the Iranian axis. But now, as Irit Linur [liberal atheist-gone-fascist, as vile as U.S’s Ann Coulter] confessed, Trump "pulled off Biden's deal." Now Trump is the devil, and Channel 14 is no longer the center of the universe.
[…] How could God allow such a theological disaster to happen? Well, it turns out [Irit] Linor has a cat. "First of all," the "Patriot" [referring to the “The Patriots”, a talk show on right wing Channel 14] said childishly the other day, "I want to say that I'm reconsidering my relationship with the ginger cat from Mar-a-Lago." Her pathetic reaction reveals a lot about the "Bibi-ist" psychology. Calling Trump "the ginger cat"? It's a transparent attempt to minimize him to a pet. She even avoided calling him by name. He's a pet that misbehaved. A bad kitty.

People. Not a “group of people”. But that’s the closest Biden can get. Despite that performative display of purchasing Rashid Khalidi's book, Biden's comment ignores the historical reality that while Christian Zionists cite biblical justifications for Israel's existence, its actual foundation lies in the same UN resolution that recognized the Palestinian right to statehood. This right is rooted in centuries of continuous Palestinian existence on their land, predating the arrival of Zionist settlers from Russia who sought their displacement.

#Ireland / Jewish leaders object to President Higgins' Holocaust Memorial speech over Israel criticism
Some representatives of the Jewish community in Ireland have voiced their objection to President Michael D Higgins delivering the keynote speech at the upcoming #Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration. Their concerns stem from President Higgins' recent criticisms of #Israel, which they deem misinformed, including allegations regarding a leaked letter to Iran and intentions to resettle Egypt. They also feel he has not adequately addressed rising antisemitism in Ireland.
President Higgins' office has responded, stating he has repeatedly addressed antisemitism, called for the release of hostages and an end to fighting, and clarified his remarks regarding the letter and settlements.
Reminder: Ireland's Chief Rabbi May 2024 (!) comments on civilian casualties in the genocide in Gaza:
[...] "I think… if you compare the ratios of civilians to terrorist casualties in this war, it's a very good ratio compared to other wars, historically. So there definitely are things that Israel could have done better, but overarchingly, yes, it's the responsibility of Hamas," he said.

#Palestine / Israeli court deports Palestinian man to Gaza, which the judge suggests is safer than Israel
Despite appeals from human rights organizations, an Israeli court upheld the deportation of a Palestinian man, H., from the West Bank to Gaza, where his family no longer resides. Judge Ilan Sela argued that Gaza might be safer for civilians than Israel due to the risk of attacks within Israel, dismissing evidence presented about the dangerous conditions in Gaza.
The Supreme Court upheld the decision, leading to H.'s deportation, a move criticized by #Gisha as reflecting the dehumanization of Palestinians within the Israeli legal system.
Shortly after the Supreme Court's ruling, H. was indeed deported to Gaza. "Gisha" did not know if he reached the "humanitarian zone" in Al-Mawasi, as he was deported without a mobile phone, and it is difficult to contact him.
[...] "The State of Israel is committing horrific war crimes in the Gaza Strip and does not hesitate to deport H. to the hell on earth that it created there," said Attorney Cohen-Lifshitz from "Gisha" in response. "The prohibition on returning a person to a place where their life is in danger is a principle of international law that was accepted in Israeli law years ago. Since the beginning of the war, we have seen again and again that not only many in the Israeli public are stripping Palestinians of their humanity, but also the courts. The two rulings issued in H.'s case are factually absurd and devoid of justice."

#UK / Chabad charity warned for funding foreign military
The Charity Commission in England and Wales issued an Official Warning to #Chabad Lubavitch Centres North East London and Essex Limited after it was discovered that the charity raised funds to support a soldier in the Israeli military, which is outside its stated charitable purposes.
The commission found this to be misconduct and a breach of trust following over 180 complaints. While charities can support the #UK armed forces, providing aid to foreign militaries is unlawful. The charity has been instructed to rectify the situation and could face further action.
The Chabad-Lubavitcher is a Hasidic Orthodox Jewish cult some claim is heretical.
[…] Today Chabad represents the cutting edge of Zionist Jewish life in America — a movement that draws disillusioned Jews from progressive and liberal corners of Judaism and funnels them to the Zionist right. And my sense is that the movement is only gonna exert more and more power as the liberal Zionist consensus collapses here in America.

[followup] Quoting Haneen Majadlh:
Haneen Majadlh wasn't surprised by Amnesty International Israel's suspension. Having heard from Palestinian members who resigned due to these issues and experiencing the tension firsthand during her own attempt to join the board to advocate for Palestinian voices, she witnessed these deep divisions first hand.
Majadlh believes the Israeli branch sought to defend the state of Israel, not just its government, because its members were defending their own families and loved ones. However, she argues this desire to protect Israel led to a denial and minimization of its wrongdoings, a phenomenon she calls "patriotic blindness," ultimately resulting in a betrayal of the organization's values and a disregard for Palestinian lives.
[…] It is clear that the Israeli branch sought to defend the State of Israel, and not necessarily the Israeli regime, because when its members defend Israel, they are defending themselves, their brothers, their soldiers, their own flesh and blood. But here is the reason for the crisis: the defense of the State of Israel led to the denial of its crimes and the minimization of their severity. It was a grotesque spectacle. It's called patriotic blindness. I don't believe that all members of Amnesty Israel are necessarily racist, but their national loyalty led to the distortion of the Israeli organization's values, the abandonment of the pursuit of truth and justice, and the disregard for the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinian victims.

#Palestine / Amnesty Intl's suspension of its local chapter
Some Israeli and international media are claiming Amnesty Intl' suspended its Israel chapter for rejecting the report about the genocide in Gaza, suggesting the problem was non-alignment by the local chapter. Some mention accusations of racism towards Palestinians.
The Former Amnesty Israel chair, as well as other board members, resigned over exclusion of Palestinian voices. Daniil Brodsky, a political strategist in Jersualem and former chair of Amnesty Israel, wrote in December last year that Amnesty Israel's analysis of the genocide report was prepared by two Israeli Jewish staff members who are not legal scholars, with no input from Palestinian staff and board members, despite their presence and readiness to contribute.
In a piece published in 2021 https://www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/israel--palestine-rights-groups-prevent-palestinians-framing-their-own-reality, Palestinian activists and scholars Haneen Maikey and Lana Tatour wrote:
[...] "a common pattern in progressive Israeli spaces is that Palestinians can provide labor, translation, lived experience and trauma to feed the analysis of Israeli Jews, but cannot be equal partners who get to do the analysis side by side and set the agenda together."
