  8. …The #DOJ also is investigating whether #Harvard University is allowing #Chinese donors to create scholarships that exclude #US students 🙄, adding to the barrage of federal inquiries the #Trump admin has opened in its battle against the #university.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy said in a statement that the country opposes what it described as the politicization of “normal #scientific, #educational, & #academic exchanges.”

  9. The release didn’t name the schools, but a #US official … said they include #Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [ #MIT ] & #JohnsHopkins University.

…Sarah Spreitzer, VP at the American Council on #Education, which represents #college & #university presidents, raised concerns that the announcement suggests, without any evidence, that the #schools are engaged in wrongdoing.

  10. "In 2023, 60 per cent of Australians rejected a constitutionally recognised Voice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. A body that could only make representations, only on matters concerning the people whose ancestors have been here sixty thousand years.
"Too much, the No campaign shrieked. Division. Privilege. Special treatment.
"Nine months later, Anthony Albanese handed Jillian Segal what the Voice never dreamed of asking for. Not a right to be heard. Power. No election. No parliamentary vote. No hearing. A three year commission reporting personally to the Prime Minister, with a mandate reaching into every campus, newsroom, classroom, gallery, charity, arts contract and visa file in the Commonwealth."

  12. Yesterday I was proudly told by a senior academic now a senior researcher at #Google #Deepmind that they are hiring more philosophers and ethicists.

This is a BAD THING. Settingaside teh fact that these are insecure jobs since corporations may change their mind about this direction on a whim, and only have the thinnest veneer of #AcademicFreedom, this is a further example of the privatisation of the #PublicRealm

  17. The #Trump admin has initiated several investigations into #GMU’s #DEI practices, which has led some at the university to worry that Washington could suffer a similar fate to Ryan. At a board meeting early this month, Washington’s supporters worried the school’s governing body — which is made up entirely of appointees by #Republican Gov #GlennYoungkin — could fire the school’s first #Black president. The board instead gave him a state-mandated raise.

  18. At the same time, a proposal making its way through #Congress that would increase #taxes on #university #endowments could cost #Harvard an estimated $850 million a year.

The wider #academic community was shocked at Thursday’s move by the #Trump Admin. In a statement, Sally Kornbluth, president of the #MIT, called it a “grave moment.”

  19. #US / Harvard Divinity School administrators resign citing university's tolerance of anti-muslim bias and attacks on pro-Palestinian voices

Two administrators at Harvard Divinity School's Religion and Public Life program have resigned, citing the university's failure to address a hostile environment towards Muslims and those critical of Israel.

Hussein Rashid, the assistant dean, explicitly accused Harvard of tolerating racist and defamatory statements against the program, particularly from Jewish groups like Hillel and #Chabad.

[…] He cited as an example an Instagram post by Harvard Chabad, led by Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi, that said: “There are numerous Harvard academic centers that essentially function as Hamas or Palestinian embassies,” citing the Religion in Public Life center “in its entirety,” and concluding, “it’s stunning that there’s no call for some of these centers to be shut down or rebuilt in its entirety.”
