Gathering at the historic Riverside Church in Manhattan on May 30, 2026, more than 2,000 people — overwhelmingly Black — paid tribute to Shakur, a member of the Black Panther Party and #BlackLiberationArmy who died in Havana in September 2025.
Writer and activist #AngelaDavis, herself affiliated with the #BlackPantherParty in the 1970s, was among the opening speakers and the first — although not the last — to point out that the defense of Cuba was a part of Shakur’s legacy. Cuba was mentioned in numerous speeches throughout the 3-½ hour program.

The third prohibition ...forbids ‘deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction’. This refers to indirect forms of killing, those that don’t target human bodies but the environment that sustains them. Sufficient ‘conditions of life’ require buildings, hospitals, ...sewage and water systems, power grids, agriculture. The intentional destruction or degradation of such structures undermines a people’s ability to survive, leading to a slower and more tortuous form of annihilation.

The workers’ action had an impact, according to the union. About 60% of the cattle earmarked for JBS went to competitors as the company tried to operate with the remaining hourly workforce and supervisors.
“The problem is the way we are being treated,” Hector Vargas told World-Outlook before the April 3 union meeting at the parking lot. “To keep up with work means taking a beating. And you cannot go to the bathroom. They make you wait a long time — if they let you go.”

The network Indivisible was prominent among the organizers, but hundreds of other groups — both national and local — helped build the events. These included a number of local and national #labor organizations.

March 21, 2026NEW YORK CITY — About 225 delegates representing organizations across the US and Canada attended the conference “Cuba Under Siege: Strategies for Resistance and a United Response.” In welcoming delegates to the meeting, Ike Nahem of the NY-NJ Cuba Sí Coalition, said: “The conference is taking place at an ominous time. A time of imperialist war in the Mideast and intervention in our hemisphere, marked by the January 3 US attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of the country’s president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Celia Flores, and the siege of #Cuba under the #US blockade of #petroleum to the country.” Nahem called on delegates to focus on actions that represent a united response to this qualitative turn of events in the world situation.
