@faab64 @palestine Destruction of #tunnels is a logical and a valid ask. However this will not prevent #Hamas from building new tunnels. Also #Hamas may be replaced by some other group, like #IslamicJihad.
If terrorism has to stop emanating from #Gaza, then political peace between #Israel and the #PalestinianState is required. No settlements in #WestBank and #Gaza. But the #twonation proposal may not be the way to achieve peace. This is a lull.

Friday, #UNGA overwhelmingly adopted a resolution enabling #Abbas to speak by video—as it did in 2022 for Ukrainian President #Zelensky following #Russia’s invasion. This year Zelensky will be attending in person, & the #UNSC is expected to meet on #Ukraine Tues.
The assembly voted overwhelmingly earlier this month to support a #TwoStateSolution & urge #Israel to commit to a #PalestinianState. Hours before that vote, Israeli PM #Netanyahu said that “there will be no Palestinian state.”

The US said late Friday it would not allow #Palestinian Authority President #MahmoudAbbas to travel to NY next month for a #UN gathering of world leaders, where several US allies are set to recognize the #PalestinianState.
A #State Dept official said Abbas & about 80 other #Palestinians would be affected by the decision to deny & revoke #visas from members of the #PLO & the #WestBank based #PA.

Apart from France, the UK, Canada & Australia have also announced plans to recognise a #PalestinianState at the #UNGA meeting next month.
The state of Palestine is currently recognised by 147 of the UN's 193 member states.
But with no recognised borders, Israeli settlers controlling large parts of the #WestBank - illegal under #InternationalLaw -& calls to do the same in #Gaza, any recognition of a Palestinian state would not change much on the ground.

The location of #E1 is significant because it is one of the last geographical links between the major #WestBank cities of #Ramallah, in the north, & #Bethlehem, in the south.
The 2 cities are 22 kilometers (14 miles) apart, but #Palestinians traveling between them must take a wide detour & pass through multiple Israeli checkpoints, spending hours on the journey. The hope was that, in an eventual #PalestinianState, the region would serve as a direct link between the cities.

Settlement development in #E1, an open tract of land east of #Jerusalem, has been under consideration for >2 decades, but was frozen due to #US pressure during previous administrations. The international community overwhelmingly considers Israeli settlement construction in the #WestBank to be #illegal & an obstacle to #peace.
