In 1948, #Israel forcibly displaced 750,000 Palestinians and destroyed 531 villages during the #Nakba.

Their names disappeared from maps and new towns were built over them.

The village of #EinHawd was of the few left standing.

Whilst #Palestinian residents were expelled, Ein Hawd’s homes, mosques and streets were preserved and repurposed as an Israeli artists’ colony.

Today, thousands of tourists visit its galleries and artists’ studios each year, while its original Palestinian residents are denied the right to return.

Nakba significa catastrofe. E per il popolo palestinese non è solo un ricordo: è una ferita ancora aperta.

Dal 1948 a oggi, espulsione, occupazione, colonie illegali, assedio, distruzione hanno segnato la vita di milioni di palestinesi. A Gaza, oggi, questa violenza è sotto gli occhi di tutti: decine di migliaia di morti, famiglie cancellate, diritto internazionale completamente ignorato.

L’Accordo di associazione UE-Israele si fonda anche sul rispetto dei diritti umani. Se quella clausola non vale davanti alle occupazioni, alle punizioni collettive e alle distruzioni di massa, allora è carta straccia.

Sospenderlo è il minimo che dovremmo fare.

Perché quando il diritto vale solo per alcuni, non protegge più nessuno.

Op vrijdagavond 15 mei komen we samen in Rotterdam om de Nakba te herdenken en om te erkennen dat dit geen verleden tijd is. Wat begon in 1948 gaat vandaag door in de vorm van een live genocide, waar ook Nederland medeplichtig aan is.

Tijdens de mars dragen we sleutels.
Sleutels van huizen die zijn afgenomen.
Sleutels die generaties lang worden bewaard als symbool van verlies, ontheemding en het recht op terugkeer.

Deze mars is bewust stil.
Geen leuzen maar aanwezigheid.
Iedereen in het zwart. Sleutels zichtbaar.
We doorbreken de stilte door zichtbaar te maken wat structureel wordt genegeerd.

"Beyond introducing foreign species to the landscape, the settler population sought to rid the land of any trace of what had existed before. Prior to the Nakba, the area of the Jerusalem Hills that last week’s fires tore through was heavily populated, with many villages spread across the landscape. Indeed, the expansive "Ayalon-Canada" forest, planted by the KKL in 1972 and now nearly entirely burnt to the ground, had already suffered two waves of devastation, albeit of another kind, in both 1948 and 1967.

"Beneath the remains of its trees may be found the ruins of four Palestinian villages: approximately 6,000 people once lived, farmed, and played there. With olive groves, fruit orchards, fields of grain, terraced farms and vegetable plots aplenty, the Jerusalem Hills were quite productive."

[...] Ben-Gurion probably never heard the word “Nakba,” but early on, at the end of the 1950s, Israel’s first prime minister grasped the importance of the historical narrative. Just as #Zionism had forged a new narrative for the Jewish people within a few decades, he understood that the other nation that had resided in the country before the advent of Zionism would also strive to formulate a narrative of its own. For the Palestinians, the national narrative grew to revolve around the Nakba, the calamity that befell them following Israel’s establishment in 1948, when about 700,000 Palestinians became refugees.

Historian Shay Hazkani (today an associate Professor of History at the University of Maryland) uncovered in this early publication a concerted effort orchestrated by Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, to manipulate the historical narrative surrounding the 1948 Palestinian exodus/explosion.

Seeking to secure international sympathy for the Jewish state (which declared independence unilaterally after a failed attempt to implement the partition resolution and while the UN were busy formulation a trustsheep, suggested by the U.S.), Ben-Gurion instructed Israeli historians to produce research that would obscure the expulsion of Palestinians, instead promoting the narrative that they fled their homes voluntarily.

Hazkani argues that this manipulation was a calculated attempt to rewrite history, downplaying Israel's role in the Palestinian #Nakba and swaying global opinion in favor of the newly established nation.

Ganze Teile der Regierung gehören der gefährlichen extremen Rechten an: Bezalel #Smotrich, Itamar Ben-#Gvir, Simcha #Rothman, Orit #Strock, Avi #Maoz, Zvi S#ukkot, Limor Son Har-#Melech und ihre Verbündeten.

Die Antwort von Premierminister Benjamin #Netanjahu war lahm. Eliyahus Erklärung sei "realitätsfern", und der Minister werde bis auf weiteres von den #Kabinettssitzungen ausgeschlossen. Netanjahu hätte Eliyahu entlassen müssen, aber er hat es nicht getan; er hat den Erhalt seiner Regierung über den Erhalt Israels gestellt.

Unter seiner Führung haben die #Siedler begonnen, das Gebiet B im #Westjordanland ins Visier zu nehmen, das gemäß den #Oslo​er Vereinbarungen unter israelischer Sicherheitskontrolle und palästinensischer #Zivilkontrolle steht. Und die radikale "#Bergjugend" der Siedler ist von der Zielscheibe des #Sicherheitsdienst​es Shin Bet zu #Minister​n, #Knessetmitglieder​n, Helfern und Beratern geworden.

Die Mitgliedschaft der ​#Rechtsextremen in der Regierung hat die gesamte #Regierung und ganz Israel in rechtsextremen Farben erscheinen lassen. Die einzige Möglichkeit, das Problem zu lösen, besteht darin, die Rechtsextremen aus der Regierung und aus den Grenzen der israelischen Legitimität zu entfernen. Die einzige Möglichkeit, Eliyahus Äußerung zu widerlegen, besteht darin, ihn und seinesgleichen zu widerlegen. Die Parteien Otzma #Yehudit und Religiöser #Zionismus müssen sofort aus dem Kabinett entlassen werden.

Sunday’s remark by Heritage Minister Amichai #Eliyahu (Otzma #Yehudit), who said that dropping a #nuclearbomb on the #GazaStrip is an option, is a problem not for #Israeli public diplomacy but rather for Israeli reality.

The problem is not any particular statement, but rather the power and legitimacy enjoyed today, in Israel as a whole and in the government, by the #Kahanist, messianic Jewish far right, which supports# annexation and #occupation and Jewish prayer on the #TempleMount, sees the current war as an opportunity and scorns the international community, international institutions and the laws of war.

This was not a slip of the tongue. In an interview with Radio Kol Barama, Eliyahu said that “there are no uninvolved [civilians]” in the Gaza Strip. Asked by his interviewer whether that meant Israel should drop a nuclear bomb on the Strip, he responded, “That’s one way.” And his subsequent “clarification” – “It is clear to anyone who is sensible that the nuclear remark was metaphorical” – is ridiculous. A #metaphor for what?

Nor is he a lone exception. Eliyahu’s party colleague, lawmaker Yitzhak #Kroizer, told Army Radio on Sunday that “the #Gaza Strip should be flattened, and there should be one sentence for everyone there – death. We have to wipe the Gaza Strip off the map. There are no innocents there.” Entire swaths of the government belong to the dangerous far right: Bezalel #Smotrich, Itamar Ben-#Gvir, Simcha #Rothman, Orit #Strock, Avi #Maoz, Zvi #Sukkot, Limor Son Har-#Melech and their confederates.

Prime Minister Benjamin #Netanyahu’s response was lame. Eliyahu’s statement, he said, was “disconnected from reality,” and the minister will be barred from cabinet meetings until further notice. He ought to have fired Eliyahu, but he chose not to do so; he prioritized preserving his government over preserving Israel.

Netanyahu isn’t the solution, but the problem. He has legitimized Kahanism and the far right. During his years in power, Israel has grown more extreme, and people who used to be loathsome #pariahs are now senior cabinet #ministers. Ideas and values that used to be outside the consensus, such as “transferring” Arabs from Israel, a second #Nakba and Jewish prayer on the #TempleMount, have been normalized under Netanyahu’s irresponsible #leadership.

He is the one who lent legitimacy to political alliances with admirers of Rabbi Meir Kahane, the mass murderer Baruch #Goldstein and the murderer of the #Dawabsheh family. Under his leadership, the settlers have begun setting their sights on the #WestBank’s Area B, which under the #Oslo Accords is under #Israeli security control and #Palestinian civilian control. And the settlers’ radical “hilltop youth” have moved from being intelligence targets of the Shin Bet security service to serving as ministers, #Knesset members, aides and advisers.

The far right’s membership in the government has painted the entire government, and all of #Israel, in far-right colors. The only way to solve the problem is to remove the far right from the government, and from the bounds of Israeli legitimacy. The only way to repudiate Eliyahu’s statement is to repudiate him and those like him. The Otzma Yehudit and Religious #Zionism parties must be fired from the #cabinet immediately.
