  1. @remixtures I think the only sustainable solution to this conundrum is radically open hardware and firmware. And to create sufficient demand to make this a viable business, regulations will have to require it.

There are examples like Raptor Computing and Oxide, that are successfully selling open hardware, but they are, alas, also American.

  2. Dear Apple,

I'm disappointed you didn't bring back #OpenFirmware when you had the chance.

  3. The #US has gone too far on so many levels, but this years #CES is rage inducing.

#Europe needs an #ARM #SoC producer, stat. It needs to fully support #Linux and preferably use #OpenFirmware.

Also, the #EU should open up to importing #Chinese made #GPU in pure defiance of these yankies. #NVIDIA telling us to lease GPUs to game in the cloud is a slap in the face.

Is #YoullOwnNothingAndYoullBeHappy taken to a digital extreme. #Consumers need to own their #compute, goddamn it.

  4. If you are at and are curious about how kernel and firmware use device tree to discover hardware and how @barebox (and other bootloaders) use it when booting Linux, come by tomorrow at 13:00 at the open source firmware assembly in Hall 3 Foyer!

If you can't make it and you don't find me near the demo at the assembly, shoot me a message, I am happy to meet up and chat about all things , barebox and liberating boot!

  5. @torvalds the point is bass ackwards anyways. What we need is more #OpenFirmware as well as #OpenHardware.

It's about market precedent at the end of the day. It should be a consumer right to also receive the code for all the firmware used in the hardware purchased.

That's a separate problem entirely. It's a whole jungle of different licensing and distribution issues all together that shouldn't concern Linux.

This is why #CoreBoot is such a fantastic project and needs to be supported as well.

  6. Dear Apple,

I'm disappointed you didn't bring back #OpenFirmware when you had the chance.

  8. I can't believe the discussions I'm having today make me wish we used #OpenFirmware instead of #UEFI on x86.

  9. Ok, had a weekend off and relaxed yesterday night doing some retro computing.
Installed on the old . Luckily I remembered that this machine does boot from a USB pen drive when ones uses the right commands in .

    Services started: and the server.

  10. @vinishor great post, one of my last projects for #Sparc is to prepare a minimal Solaris setup for them. I was booting them over the network (“boot net” from the ok prompt) and using Jumpstart to automatically install Solaris on them.

#OpenFirmware is an intersection system on its own, you can build your own from the source from github.com/MitchBradley/openfi

    Thanks @simondassow for boosting this!

  11. Isn't it about time we start rallying against #proprietary #firmware already?

From every #EV and #car being a glorified #telemetry machine, to every chip out there basically harboring #SecretSauce with the "trust me bro" guarantee attached.

Neither #US interests, #Chinese interests or private interests should hold so much power. No one should.

All firmware; I repeat, ALL FIRMWARE should be #OpenFirmware. The firmware isn't open? #Ban the #product outright.

  12. Gasp. I hope that it were true, but my heart has been broken by disappointment before (*cough*#librem*cough*). But I digress.

Can somebody give me a damn #Linux phone with #openfirmware, #gnome or #plasma mobile, a decent camera, mic and screen with enough processing, memory and storage to meet with modern self hosting in mind.

Indeed, who can deliver me my dream phone? I'd be ever so happy to know about it.

  13. It's CRAY-Z how each and every auto manufacturer in the world is tracking your every movement right now.

From auto manufacturers in the #US, #Europe and #Asia, what we're seeing is basically a result of "secret sauce" once more. The fact is that the only thing that will save us is #OpenSource and #OpenFirmware, because as always the vendor does not deserve blind trust, because they will abuse it.

  14. @lkundrak Yes, that's me. I am not sure I knew what I was doing, but it was fun! I love #openfirmware

  15. Fantastic! #TotallyNormalComputing

Booting #MacOS9 Installer from USB, and without even touching #OpenFirmware. I really like the community for this kind of service!

'Mac OS 9.2.2 "boot kit" for booting your G3/G4 from an USB stick' by that-ben on Macintosh Repository just works out of the box! On a #powerpc #G3 #ibook with USB1.

And it was kinda fast to boot and install too. My #Powerbook got some company now!.

  17. Le' #GOAT of the #tech #youtuber world is Christopher Barnatt.

I'm glad to see #RISCV #SBC systems being generally available. This is something that will allow us to adapt to a new era of hardware availability, whereby we have options.

It could be a NEW AND IMPROVED #AMD #Intel #x86 architecture, high performance #ARM with power savings, or for that sweet, sweet #OpenFirmware standard to take. I need me some assurances that vendor can't mess up, mmkay?

  18. @yakkoj was the most pleasant boot environment I ever used. I could figure out how to boot things, which is not exactly true today with an EFI shell.
And that was on real hardware, too.

  19. Well holy hell. #SecureBoot doesn't work when you got a firmware rootkit? Say it ain't so...!

Tell me again why #OpenFirmware is a bad idea again?

The #SecretSauce fallacy keeps getting pummelled in the face, decade after decade.

  20. Everybody ♥️ #opensource, don't they? But how about giving some love to #OpenFirmware? In the ***FUTURE*** 🐙 we'll hopefully have vendors and foreign interests shoved tf out of our #hardware, and good riddance, because they shouldn't be in control of it in the first place.

Also, shout outs to the #libreboot maintainer. What in the ever loving Carmack is FSF up to? #Libre ain't a brand, it's a philosophy.

  21. No human made system can stand the test of time, no matter how many times you may patch it - word to US legislature.

Regarding #hardware, it's time to demand #openfirmware from #manufacturers. It might mean giving extra playing cards to #hackers, but they can already read #assembly and have no problem #decompiling or #debugging their way to #vulnerabilities.

It's a good idea to start with all #x86 chips that are #EOL, which should be refurbished with open firmware.

  22. I want to share a useful link and a couple of real screenshots with #openfirmware commands and words, just in case someone needs it.

Oh, and if it doesn’t seem to boot into it, try with the right option/alt key 🙂

    - low power, daylight readable, artisan design

    - Accepting a wide range of (unstable) (AC and DC) power source including solar
+ has a long lasting easy to replace/make diy internal battery

    - Right after power on boots into a #Forth from ROM/Flash: a full featured multi language terminal OS (command line, editor, compiler, debugger, resident monitor, filesystems, & documentation + source included). Which also acts as general boot loader :)
+ Open modular design with embedded (basic) platform independent drivers
+ Over an #hackable zero configuration auto discovery self-healing variable speed powered serial peer-to-peer bus which can be daisy-chained

    - If #Wireless, supports mesh-networking with nearby wireless peer and secure relaying

    - If #Networked, offer some (common/well-known) store-and-forward #DDTN services

  24. Due to lack of other optical drives I needed to dig up the old #powerbook to burn the custom #MacOS9 CD.

For some reason #openfirmware didn't like the monitor or the resolution on the monitor so can't get the #MacMiniG4 to boot from a usb stick.
