  2. You should not have to pay for software you don't want. Devices like laptops should be neutral in relation to the software they run:
🔸 Do not restrict users to specific software.
🔹 Transparent pricing. Consumers should have the right to decline pre-installed software.
🔸 Hassle-free refunds. Manufacturers and vendors should clearly publish the steps for requesting and obtaining a refund on their websites.

  5. @Codeberg has always and vocally taken a position.

“Codeberg is free to choose a values-driven community […]”

They were never “neutral”, they are clear that is the choice they made. This policy does not change that.

Dislike the principled political position that is , if you like. But to pretend it's not a political position, or expect the principle to be compromised for convenience or to gain more users?

    To hell with that.

    🌐 Debian Day:

  9. "Notice: Your device's service license expires in 48 hours. Upon expiry, the device will initiate its End-of-Life protocol to protect our proprietary ecosystem." We accept the invisible chains of proprietary software because they're convenient and ignore the fine print because it's easier than facing the truth. But what happens when the corporation decides your device's time is up? jxself.org/end-of-life.shtml #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom #SciFi #technology #fsf #linux

  10. You are right to be alarmed @Steltloper, the ecosystem is threatened as many of the people trusted to maintain it are willingly dismantling checks on quality, by allowing in various degrees.

This is exacerbated by the corporate takeover of many not-for-profit entities set up to steward (e.g. , , …). Today those foundations push an agenda of handing our power to controlled by sociopathic billionaires.

  11. Yeah, fonts that contain executable code are therefore restricted by copyright like other programs @renardboy

and most popular fonts are not licensed with and so can't be part of a operating system.

We benefit from the hard work of people that created freely-licensed equivalents for the most popular fonts, so our desktop can have good looking replacements. But for others, you're on your own.

  13. :fsfe: August Newsletter is here!

After our #FSFE25 celebration, we are already working on our next projects!

While we are still enjoying the wonderful "hangover" of our days in Cracow, in the last weeks we have also got positive news on the #DMA and the Apple litigation, we submitted our proposal to the new #EIF...

  14. Just about happy with my stack of software. Need to get RustDesk working, and I've been tinkering with LocalAI to figure out this agentic stuff (I really don't use LLMs much).

The final things are to make sure that everything is being backed up properly (it isn't) and finishing my homepage dashboard (it's boring and plain). And then I think I can finally sit back and enjoy my services - at least until I get the urge to tinker again...

  15. @karen Thanks for sharing!
    I am curious:

How do people explain #copyleft to others who are completely new to the concept without starting with a bunch of legalese?

I try to explain it as a "pay if forward" kind of thing, but would love to know how you explain it. :)

  16. For those wanting a completely de-blobbed Linux kernel (without having to compile from source), the FSFLA Linux-libre page provides ready to run binaries for Debian and Fedora based distros (supporting multiple architectures). It also provides realtime variants, along with the source code for each release.

  20. PeerTube's an amazing free and decentralized video platform that deserves more attention. It's a free software replacement to mainstream video sites, and helps fight against centralization on the web. #FreeSoftware #SoftwareFreedom #Decentralization #PeerTube
