  3. #Chrultrabook people, I have a #Chromebook and a #Chromebox that run #MrChromebox' #coreboot and I would like to update the firmware.

Currently I use a live USB with #LinuxMint XFCE, as it is easy to use and insecure enough for it to work.

The tools need access to read and write the firmware, which is quite deep.

I would like to enable that support on my main #NixOS system, at least sometimes, but don't know what is missing. Same on vanilla #Fedora btw, doesnt work there either.

The iomem=relaxed option is not enough, do you know what else is needed?

For NixOS and Chromebook support I found this amazing repo, but it is quite complex:

  8. the very same day i actually figured how to submit one to #coreboot, struggled against gerrit bravely and won
even though at the same time i learned the openid provider i'm using is going away in two weeks, another one gone out of service 2 years ago, openid itself appears obsolete, and other options are github and google lol

is this actually easy and they were right that cannibal corpse, drugs and leaded solder turn you into a simpleton

  9. @jedie I guess this depends on the country. I can buy direct from Protectli Canada.

How is this related to smartphones ? Of course there are proprietary blobs in Wifi and other chips, not sure why this means more support needed. Can you elaborate ?

Protectli will also load #Coreboot for you on their routers, very useful too.

  19. If I would use #coreboot or something similar which convertible/ 2-in-1 notebook can be recommended?

  20. How do I get the motivation to fix this laptop mainboard?

The only thing wrong with it is the charge ports, but the problem is 44 of the 48 pads across the 2 type c ports are missing. (don't ask me how, I don't know either, its used since it was the only replacement board I could afford)

I've been putting it off for a few months now, I know what must be done, I just am too intimidated.

Any tips for reframing this problem so i stop putting it off would be appreciated

  23. Finally updated #coreboot on my @starlabssystems #starbook #starbookvi. I did update from 9.02 to 25.10, so first time since ~2yrs.
I feel like i am using a new laptop. Fan is not kicking that often, is very silent now. Laptop wakes up faster. Also my chinese mobile 14" monitor finally works via USB-C (it was working before and then stopped for some reason).
I am still a couple of updates behind but 25.10 is the newest at LFVS

  24. RE: chaos.social/@sleepyowl/116126

This is such a good thread, but of all the replies and quote toots, no one has mentioned #coreboot #libreboot

Of course there are very old and limited number of boards that can run these, and i'm wondering if this could give a boost to more boards being supported.

Someone actually took the time to port #Coreboot to a #ThinkPad #X270, proving that you too can waste hours of your life for an unnoticeable boot time #improvement. 🕒🔍 Meanwhile, the rest of us are just trying to choose between 50 shades of syntax highlighting themes, because that's what really matters, right? 🎨👨‍💻

  27. I liberated an HP Chromebox G1 with CoreBoot using the MrChromeBox script.

Now running Artix Linux with KDE, as I'd like to get more experience with KDE. With the regular system update commands, the most recent KDE 6.6 that was just released last week was pulled down and installed without problems.

I also installed XLibre as a replacement for Xorg.

    So far, so good.

  28. Have you found a curated list of newer laptops that use #CoreBoot ?
  29. Recently, I've been thinking quite a bit about Linux (and possibly NetBSD) on Chromebook and Chromebox hardware.

I've used a Chromebook with Linux as my daily driver laptop for quite a while a couple years ago. Switched back to a ThinkPad for a bit more CPU power and memory.

I see a lot of value in these Chromebooks that have been liberated with CoreBoot. I posted about it quite a bit a few years ago. May have to get back into it.

Things look like they have changed a bit. Before, a lot of the newer Chromebooks could not be liberated. Now, it looks like pretty much every Chrome device with an Intel processor can be. That's a big improvement.

@c_th1

  32. @torvalds the point is bass ackwards anyways. What we need is more #OpenFirmware as well as #OpenHardware.

It's about market precedent at the end of the day. It should be a consumer right to also receive the code for all the firmware used in the hardware purchased.

That's a separate problem entirely. It's a whole jungle of different licensing and distribution issues all together that shouldn't concern Linux.

This is why #CoreBoot is such a fantastic project and needs to be supported as well.

  33. @[email protected] @[email protected]

Is it worth mentioning or promoting minifree.org in the same breath? "Linux/BSD preinstalled laptops with Libreboot BIOS replacement".

    minifree.org/

They will sell you, among other things, a heavily modified Lenovo Thinkpad T480 with Linux or BSD pre-installed.

    #libreboot #minifree #linux #BSD #laptops #FOSS #coreboot

    Proceeds fund libreboot development.

  34. Oh no, #Intel platform detection isn't that easy.
There is no simple field like platform ID or something in #IFD to determine it.
Also, IFD fields have changed semantics a bit over time.

So #coreboot's ifdtool has some "guessing" and a list of known platforms to apply quirks, with the platform to be passed via CLI, not detected.

I will try my best to use information from the ME #firmware to get a rough idea, e.g. presence of CPDs.
I think that's the way to go.

  38. @GossiTheDog even for gaming, windows is going out the door, with the advent of the steamdeck, and steam support being what it is today on linux.

and those chromebooks all run #coreboot or at least google's modified version of it. you can put #mrchromebox coreboot distro on it: docs.mrchromebox.tech/

doing this also lets you use normal linux distros really easily. and this is such a magnificent coup on google's part, getting coreboot into so many millions of computers in such a manner. bravo!
