Anyone managed to any of the #Fedora #AtomicDesktop distros booting on #LibreBoot yet? I can boot it fine if I explicitly choose the NVME drive but the "normal" boot process doesn't find Fedora's bootloader. The Fedora specific instructions on the Libreboot website don't seem to apply to #Atomic versions.

This is such a good thread, but of all the replies and quote toots, no one has mentioned #coreboot #libreboot

Of course there are very old and limited number of boards that can run these, and i'm wondering if this could give a boost to more boards being supported.

I recall on my X200, tp-smapi wasn't supported. Has that changed on newer machines?

Nice rant but #libreboot is a godsend.

I actually have comfort in how my laptop's boot process works now, and I get to dodge garbage UEFI that every manufacturer seems to put in their laptops now. This is not a privacy concern for me, it's just the bugginess makes Linux and other operating systems a bit unusable.

I modified bbswitch so I could switch Optimus off/on using x86 IO in kernel space. Unfortunately it works 80-90% of the time, and this **really** should only be done in BIOS space. x86 seems to share the notion of Ring 0 with most of coreboot and the kernel, but think about the System Management Mode components (and the ME, if it were still active in this BIOS).

I don't know much about the coreboot codebase but there are stale but pending patches for Optimus support on certain Lenovo W series ThinkPads that seem to share the same Power Management IC. Patience...

American schools had machine shop electives. Offer them the same with computers' inner workings if they so wish.

I tried compiling #libreboot for my T480 this past weekend and I kept getting errors. I think I know what the problem is but I'll wait until Friday to give it a shot.

That's another point. I'm not quitting, I'm resting up for a bit and approaching the problem again with a fresh perspective. If you're hitting a wall, step back, work on something else, but don't forget to get back to what you were stuck on.

Since I've been on Mastodon I have:
• bought 2 used ThinkPads
• bought a kit to #libreboot said ThinkPads
• started a recurring donation to @signalapp
• started playing with #meshtastic devices

Amazing what no algorithms will do for privacy, security, and sustainability.

Unfortunately, I did try once and #LibreBoot wouldn't let it boot. I haven't tried it in a couple years, though.

I know probably nobody's gonna care, but support for #Argon2 was finally merged in upstream #grub and I'm so happy. I kinda disliked the fact that we had to rely on downstream patches. Now that it's all upstream, I can setup full disk encryption, including /boot, with #luks2 on my #libreboot #thinkpad

Tried to flash new #Libreboot binary with (proper) text-mode instead of corebootfb-mode.

And suddenly found that my #ch341 programmer is dead :dragnshock: It was in the antistatic pouch on the shelf for half of the year and now it can't read/write/erase my #SPI chip on the #Thinkpad X220. It even can't be detected by OS.

Are CH341 programmers really so unreliable that they are dying without any visible reasons? :dragnsad:

C'est une machine fonctionnelle qui a un certain âge (batterie d'origine qui tient quelques dizaines de minutes), avec un clavier AZERTY FR (autocollants sur clavier QWERTZ), 8GB de RAM, pas de HDD/SSD et surtout flashé avec #Libreboot (pas de BIOS proprio donc). J'habite en Belgique, dans la région de Namur (mais je peux me déplacer dans les régions aux alentours comme Bruxelles)
