@thomholwerda Since I know you're a fan of weird CPU architectures and have owned Sun machines in the past... Did you ever get a chance to use an UltraSPARC T1 or T2? The barrel processor idea has fascinated me since college, and I'd still love to get my hands on one of those. Maybe if I save up for a few years, I can try getting a batch made with wafer.space, since the hardware design is open source...

I ran the Solaris version of this as a test. Loaded front page of Yahoo and then rejumpstarted workstation to scrub out the Microsoft.

Is there anyone in #Australia or #NZ, or who would be willing to ship to NZ, who could donate a #SPARC #Solaris (sun4u/sun4v) machine to the building effort for FractalKit? We're running up against some limits and some really bad time sinks, doing all of this on a 650MHz #UltraSPARC IIe is.... really really painful. We know this is a long shot, but if anyone out there has a machine they could donate to this we would be immensely thankful. This porting effort is really important to us but it's not going to be actually useful if a single library takes a day to compile. If you can't help, then please boost? @SolarisDiaspora

@yakkoj #OpenFirmware was the most pleasant boot environment I ever used. I could figure out how to boot things, which is not exactly true today with an EFI shell.
And that was on real hardware, too.

Finally ran "poweroff" on my trusty old #ultrasparc #server 🥰
It did good for almost 20 years with #linux. Probably would have run for a while longer but the IDE system disk started to fail. All the important stuff was a on separate raid that got migrated to a boring x86 VM.
But now I can experiment with it a bit more as it's not in any production use anymore.
Had to wait for October. It just felt wrong to do it under #suntember

System drive (good old IDE!) started to get cranky in my Netra AX1105-500 #UltraSparc IIe so it was time to migrate services to a boring x86 VM.
It had taken care of my email needs since 2006, so pretty much 24/7 💪 little #sparc now have a nice retirement.

eheheheh, so fucking excited for tomorrow, we get to actually have a real SPARC server! We're going to test a couple of #Illumos distros, including #tribblix and #OpenIndiana, as well as #OpenBSD, #NetBSD, and #Debian... we would test actual mainline #Solaris but the bastards who murdered #Sun and then stripped their corpse for parts decided to discontinue support for #UltraSPARC CPUs and we refuse to pay them $BIGNUM to get one of their servers that you need activation keys to boot their CPUs, fuck off. Any other OSes yall want us to test? Software?

~15 years ago I worked as a #datacenter manager and #unix #sysadmin. Some of the more interesting decommissioned servers got a second life with me.

This #SunFireV880 with 8× #UltraSPARC III CPUs and 64GB RAM and maxed out with #fiberchannel hard drives.

Used it as a home #ZFS Lab on #Solaris 10. But eventually my home hadn't space for it though and it was relocated to a friend.

So this is another post about the hardware I regret not keeping.

Fun fact, I've run a 650Mhz #ultrasparc pretty much 24/7 since about 2006. It is waiting for retirement as soon as I get time to move everything. Like that will ever happen 🙄

My #ultrasparc server has been running pretty much 24/7 from 2006. Reaching legal drinking age soon.
No need for multiple cores or gigahertz for doing the simple stuff.

Update: #netboot doesn't work when your #sun #ultrasparc idprom has a dead battery, because the NIC MAC address is stored there...
