  5. @BrideOfLinux

I love this article so much. This is a GOLD MINE.

"Their fear is that the giant AI labs that sell #proprietary models are somehow acting like Trojan horses."

Of course, this is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from the AmAzInG virtuous proprietary software that the Holy Angel by the name of #Microsoft is selling. 😂

Apparently, proprietary #software is only bad when OTHERS do it. Logic 100. 🤣

  7. Gamers, I think we have reached a point of no return. With physical media disappearing and developers forcing ever more burdensome Digital Restrictions Management upon us, while also quietly censoring or yanking things we allegedly "own", I doubt I will ever buy another console again for as long as I live. At least my Fedora computer does not come with strings attached.

  9. If Google carries on with its plans to close Android this September, I am probably going to invest in an 8- or 9-inch mini laptop. I figure it will do almost everything I can on my desktop, while still barely fitting in my Wrangler jeans' pockets. (At least Google intends to release millions of effectively sterile male mosquitoes into the wild to cull invasive populations, so there's that.)

  11. Although I must say I agree that #ODF ( #OpenDocumentFormat ) , defender by #LibreOffice should be the #DEFAULT #OPÉN #DOCUMENT #FORMAT... , AND #NOT #OOXML which is the closed and #proprietary format by #Microsoft

But hey, this is just a question of time , I presume.. and hope

  13. I noticed today that #MSOffice Online now has an option to save files as #odt instead of #pttx. It made me wonder, can we change our files at work to open formats and still have the MS using colleagues use them properly? That would be a great step :awesome:!

Sadly, it seems not. Saving in MS Office breaks a lot of design in the files. Opening the pttx in @libreoffice works perfectly fine. Saving from there as odt does as well. But then MS Office considers the working odt file "corrupt", disallowing online view.

Seems like MS Office their implementation of open document standards are still lacking, so for anything requiring collaboration with MS Office users we're still stuck in proprietary formats. Sad :blobcatverysad:.

  15. I am beginning to think that #Nintendo has become a bad influence on gaming. Yes, its games are good, but I am only now realizing this is a company that litigates aggressively on copyright matters, kills off support for its old games so that it can resell them virtually unchanged on new consoles, and expects us to abide by its tedious #EULA or risk bricking our devices. So ask yourselves this: are you playing the game, or is Nintendo playing you?

  17. @knoppix95 Without knowing the details, I don’t trust this as long #Discord as a whole remains #proprietary software. Even assuming that #DAVE is 100% secure, why should we trust that there is *not* a backdoor in Discord that will just bypass DAVE and leak the keys anyway?

I refuse to trust Discord or any other proprietary software for "secure" communications.

  19. Open source is benefiting from the current AI trend: some projects are already improving their security posture and reducing their attack surface.

Proprietary software, for now, seems more out of the loop.

But once LLMs become better at analysing binaries, compiled code, and obfuscation, I wonder how vendors will handle the likely increase in vulnerability disclosures.

  21. I have to disagree with the author of this article. Surely, Minecraft has come a long way, but the one thing that really—and I mean *really*—repels me is #Microsoft requiring players to log in with a Microsoft account. What can I say? I just don't see any fun in letting Redmond monitor my activities, and that's why I have Luanti on both my Android and my Fedora computer.

  22. #Inkjet #cartridges suck and should be banned! Finally got some more paper for my #printer today but then the #cyan cartridge runs out of #ink, so I put in a new cartridge and guess what? The new one doesn’t work at all despite the printer saying the cartridge is full of ink. Like, I tried everything to fix it including reinserting the cartridge, doing the #nozzle check, cleaning the heads, performing a head realignment, restarting the printer, updating the #firmware, printing a cyan purge test page, none of that worked. The last two options I can think of are
    1. Try using an official #Epson cartridge, since we’ve been using aftermarket cartridges for a while since the official ones are way #overpriced, but the aftermarket ones have been working fine up until now and if it doesn’t work, then that’s money on an #expensive Epson cartridge wasted.
    Or
    2. Just get rid of this #capitalist cartridge printer and buy a #tank one, because I’m done with printer companies locking us into #proprietary cartridges. I wanna be able to use whatever ink we buy without having crappy #DRM. Plus this printer is now 10 years old anyways, it’s lasted surprisingly long and has outlasted very other printer we had, but this problem as well as the constant need to realign the heads to stop lines from going through the ink are signs it’s time to upgrade to a tank printer.

I hope one day the governments of the world ban inkjet cartridges, because they are horrible for the #environment and are just here to keep prices up.

Pics attached of the #nozzles in case anyone can see what’s gone wrong, but I highly doubt there is anything that can be seen.

  25. Product Warning: do *not* buy #ebikes with #bosch motors/controllers. they are locked-down by some #evil #proprietary shit and try to #vendorlockin you into their shitty products. the motors are good, but the apps, the navigation, are horrible, and #interoperability with devices and apps of other vendors is actively hindered.

learn from my mistake, don't repeat it.

pls discuss products/vendors that are open and interoperable in comments below.

  27. #Cal is moving its flagship #opensource programme to a #proprietary model due to the increasing threat of #AIhacking. The company believes that open-source code, while transparent, is now #vulnerable to #AI tools that can easily find #vulnerabilities. Despite this move, Cal remains committed to open source and has released Cal.diy, a fully open-source version for hobbyists. zdnet.com/article/ai-security- #AIagent #AI #ML #NLP #LLM #GenAI
