Finally, great to hear. In general it seems hard to have people understand the difference between convienient locked-in platforms where you pay with your autonomy and privacy, compared to the open protocols the internet is build upon. We nevertheless do our best supporting the latter.
For example with explanations like this to our Dutch organizations, encouraging them to embrace the 'good' protocols as well: https://nietzonder.nl

Yes, I'm late to the party, I know. But right now, I feel like a king: I have created my first usable container image from scratch and published both the source and resulting image on my own Forgejo server 😎
From now on, I can install a complete OpenLDAP server with only one command. This is only version 0.0.1 and needs more work to be useful for others, but it's a foundation on which I can build. Next step is to create my own schema file, because why not. I have special needs, so to speak 😏
This LDAP server will be the source of truth for the Authentik server that follows, and the set of containers that will form a complete e-mail environment with all bells and whistles you can think of, and let's not forget Nextcloud, PowerDNS and Hubzilla.
It's almost time to say goodbye to my old server that has all software manually installed, and move to a modern setup where everything comes in its own container(s) and automatically plugs itself into Træfik, my reverse proxy.
I'm a happy self-hoster 😎

"It’s entirely possible to run a reliable, capable, professional digital stack mostly from European infrastructure"
For those interested, here's an interesting & rather useful blog post 👉🏻 https://monokai.com/articles/how-i-moved-my-digital-stack-to-europe
"Digital sovereignty isn’t about paranoia. It’s about being conscious about your infrastructure, where you decide who holds your data, who can reach it, and what happens when politics shift" 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻

To stay connected and be visible in #student life we are (still) on #instagram.
But the longer we stay, the harder it becomes to defend that choice.
It clashes with what we stand for as a #library: trustworthy information, #OpenScience, #DigitalAutonomy & student wellbeing. We want to explore alternatives and open up the conversation about what responsible (online) #communication with students could and should look like.
Read our story and share your thoughts:

Read this blog by @sourav666 on @itsfoss about the use of #Forgejo by the Dutch central #government:
https://itsfoss.com/news/netherlands-forgejo-migration/
"The platform is a self-hosted Forgejo instance, running on Dutch government infrastructure... It's free for all government organizations..."
"... this initiative is still in the pilot phase, with the rollout being kept deliberately gradual."

In the context of our work at Better Tech Club a "normie" is a person for whom a computer is a mean to some other end. Meanwhile for us nerds, computers are very interesting on their own. This difference often leads to misunderstandings. But for a meaningful political change, all decent and intelligent people need to work together. It may not be immediately obvious, but many normies are in fact intelligent and decent. So let's try to understand each other better.

Time for the next #DIday the first Sunday of every month. See the German events here: https://events.diday.org/ (Mobilizon)
Meanwhile you can check the switch recipes: https://di.day/en/digital-switch-recipes and find yourself a decent challenge for the coming month.

Official marketing copy alert...
"Avoiding vendor lock-in has become a much bigger driver of open source adoption, and this New Stack article digs into what the 2026 State of Open Source Report reveals about how teams are balancing independence with maintenance, security, and compliance demands.

Dutch civil servant fired because he spoke up against the takeover of #Solvinity that provides the #DigiD service. DigiD is the central system that is used in the #Netherlands to log in into official government and related services.
Solvinity, the company hosting DigiD will probably be taken over by Kyndryl, a US company. Putting the login functionality of the Dutch official digital services under US #jurisdiction.

New blog post: Hello #DigitalAutonomy
I never really liked the term Digital Sovereignty for the way I have built my digital presence. Sovereignty is about nations. Big, bureaucratic, faceless organisations. It feels heavy. Burdensome. Static.
(Replies to this post will show up as comments on my blog)

Building communities of practice, bottom-up. The Open Source Way. To solve problems in those groups and share the lessons learned, help to adapt them for other groups in different situations, building a digital commons that can be used by anyone, everywhere. That's my way of thinking and #DigitalAutonomy expresses that in far better ways than #DigitalSovereignty ever could.
Is all for today :) Please share your thoughts and let's have a productive discussion!

I never really liked the term Digital Sovereignty. Sovereignty is about nations. Big, bureaucratic, faceless organisations. It feels heavy. Burdensome. Static.
I want to express how I aim to be in control of my digital presence instead. Free to do things the way I want them to be. Sharing all of it. Helping others, based on agreed values and principles. And I think I have a better term for that, a term that feels much more natural
**Digital Autonomy**

Top comment on hackernews on this seems appropriate:
> The slogan "Age Verification Solution for all Europeans" is a lie.
>
>The honest slogan is "Age Verification Solution for Europeans Who Use Mobile Devices that are Controlled by US Corporations and by Extension US Government Which Can Revoke Your Use of the Solution with No Recourse". -

Look at this:
The beginning of a #GitForge by the Dutch government (overheid) based on #Forgejo.
Very good that the Dutch #government takes the first steps to become independent regarding their Git repositories.
Read why this important in a blog with a recommendation for a Git forge that I wrote a while ago (in Dutch):

It should come as no surprise that Beam is based on Matrix.
France and Germany have set a good example, France has TChap, Germany uses BwMessenger and TI-Messenger, all based on Matrix.
Let's hope all other a European countries and the EU itself will follow these examples, fast...

Belgium is the next European country to take communication between public workers into its own hands. No more WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, it's Beam from now on.
*Beam has been developed by the state-backed company Belgian Secure Communications (BSC). It will eventually be used by around 750,000 public sector employees and military personnel.*
