I am pretty pissed that just because Google has captured the SMS/MMS messaging market with its proprietary RCS standard, I might have to switch from a microG-based Android OS to something with actual Google integration just to even receive text messages from loved ones.

Knowing only enough about computers to manage to install Linux and use it as a daily-driver at home, I read de Raadt's quote. On that basis alone, I decided #OpenBSD was worth trying to switch to. Everything I've read since has confirmed my decision... Although I have yet to learn how to mount/unmount a USB flash drive successfully 🤣

You've been smoking something really mind altering, and I think you
should share it.

x86 virtualization is about basically placing another nearly full
kernel, full of new bugs, on top of a nasty x86 architecture which
barely has correct page protection. Then running your operating
system on the other side of this brand new pile of shit.

You are absolutely deluded, if not stupid, if you think that a
worldwide collection of software engineers who can't write operating
systems or applications without security holes, can then turn around
and suddenly write virtualization layers without security holes.

You've seen something on the shelf, and it has all sorts of pretty
colours, and you've bought it.

That's all x86 virtualization is.

I've been building Knit: a messenger for Android that works with no internet at all.

Phones talk straight to each other over Wi-Fi Aware and Bluetooth LE, both radios at once, and each one relays for the phones around it. A message can cross a crowd by hopping between the people in it, with no tower and no server anywhere in the path.

DMs and groups are end-to-end encrypted with forward secrecy. GPLv3, and it's on F-Droid.

@stux I'm not sure who needs to hear it, but they're probably reading this thread... #Obtanium is a really neat alternative to the Google Play Store: if I understand correctly, I give it the URL to the git repository, and it can fetch the app and monitor for updates; the security-conscious crowd like this because it reduces dependence on a third party (like Google or F-Droid). So far I've got about a quarter of my apps through it.

Any #fairphone user around who can comment on their experience? My current cell phone is dying and I'm considering a Fairphone Gen 6+ to (eventually) degoogleify it.

I'm not sure I can run a completely degoogleified device right now, but I'm considering using LineageOS + MicroG as a first step to start removing any Google thing I depend on.

Advice? Experiences? Boosts? All welcome!
