The Autistici/Inventati (A/I) server case (it was located in Amsterdam, seized by dutch authorities on request of US agencies) show that #DigitalSovereignty is not limited to running your software on machines in the EU. It actually is about real sovereignty. Why did the dutch authorities feel obliged to do this? The @EUCommission should start a thorough review of the agreements with the US under that perspective, in my opinion.

"Published on 3 June, the European Commission’s Tech Sovereignty Package—comprising the Chips Act 2.0, the Cloud and AI Development Act (CADA), the EU Open Source Strategy, and a Strategic Roadmap for Energy Digitalisation—is portrayed as a significant shift in the EU’s digital governance strategy. It signals that the EU is no longer content to rely on regulatory frameworks like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Digital Services Act (DSA), Digital Markets Act (DMA) and the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Act. The EU now seeks to artificially inflate both the supply of and demand for AI data centres, as well as to expand the material infrastructures underpinning them.
Yet, as the rhetoric of “strategic autonomy” echoes through the policymaking corridors of Brussels, the Package is fractured by internal contradictions. It conflates the fraught competitiveness agenda with the goal of genuine digital self-determination, mistakes building AI data centres on EU soil for structural tech independence, and engages in what can only be described as “sovereignty-washing”—repackaging the deregulation of fundamental rights and environmental protection as an industrial win. This aggressive industrial policy also embraces the EU’s securitisation and militarisation agenda, as Europe’s loss of competitiveness is perceived as a security threat."

I very much prefer self-hosting on the level of larger communities with more social control and a better #lorryFactor, e.g. a #cooperative or a #club.
Ideally, use federated technology, so people could move to other providers, without losing their contacts. #Fediverse and #Jabber ftw.

It's part of a response from tech giant Palantir to a press inquiry from a European investigative team. It would be difficult to find a more concise way to express Europe in a single sentence.
But Palantir is a multi-billion-dollar US corporation with a tarnished reputation, facing pressure in Europe. A growing number of European governments are distancing themselves from the company, concerned about digital sovereignty and increasing dependence.
“We cannot accept new strategic dependencies in the digital sector,” said French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu in June, announcing the development of their own systems with the domestic company Chapsvision instead of further cooperation with Palantir.
European countries are concerned about sensitive internal organizational knowledge and the security of the vast amounts of data processed by Palantir systems. "It's inconceivable to allow industry employees access to national databases," German Vice Admiral Thomas Daum told the Handelsblatt newspaper . This is because, at NATO, which uses Palantir's Maven system, company employees operate and maintain the system. According to a documentary, even German police forces, such as the one in Hesse, have desks reserved for Palantir employees ."

The Dutch government will keep using Facebook despite unresolved privacy risks.
A 2022 assessment identified 7 high privacy risks on government Facebook pages, including tracking, profiling and the use of visitors’ personal data for Meta’s own purposes.
In 2024, the Dutch data protection authority advised against continuing until those risks were addressed.
Negotiations failed. Meta rejected the proposed safeguards, but Facebook remains too important for reaching certain audiences.
This highlights a major problem with Big Tech dependency: even public institutions struggle to reduce their reliance on platforms they don't control.
