While #urricane frequency is lower than the Atlantic, the 👉#Pacific coast faces a far more catastrophic long-term hazard:

  6. Unravelling The Dance Of Earthquakes - Evidence Of Partial Synchronization Of The Northern San Andreas Fault And Cascadia Megathrust

“Previous paleoseismic work has suggested a possible stress triggering relationship between the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault based on similar event timings. Turbidite successions correlated to both systems may support this hypothesis. Historic earthquakes in 1980 and 1992 in the Cascadia subduction zone and the 1906 earthquake on the northern San Andreas fault left turbidite records that are temporally well constrained by bomb-carbon−supported age-depth models..."

  11. Mega-tsunami warning: Could a single earthquake drown Seattle and Portland within minutes? New research raises alarm

Scientists have sounded an urgent warning about one of North America’s most dangerous fault lines. The Cascadi…

A Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) online training on sanitation happily titled, “You Survive the Earthquake But Die of Dysentery,” was presented by a Portland NET member and physician, Merilee Karr, who began “Those involved with sanitation following a catastrophic event will be more likely to save more lives than the rescue and medical team.” That got our attention.

  13. Scientists have mapped one of the most hazardous spots on the globe in unprecedented detail: a 600-mile geologic boundary just off the #PacificNorthwest coast.

Along this fraught stretch, called the #CascadiaSubductionZone, 2 pieces of the #Earth’s crust slide against each other, building up stresses capable of unleashing a catastrophic 9.0-magnitude #earthquake & generating a #tsunami, w/waves as high as 40 feet.

  14. It’s strange to be in a place - physically and mentally - where I’m neither always looking for The Mountain, nor on constant alert for The Big One.

#Illinois is flat and the trees are bare, but plentiful are the sun…and the stability of the earth.

Of course, snow and cold are, too. And I saw a storm siren today, a reminder that tornadoes happen here. But I’m visiting part of my chosen family, surrounded by their warmth.

  15. In a new Temblor blog post, University of Texas Institute for Geophysics postdoctoral scholar Alice Turner details the various seismic risks Portland, Oregon faces from local faults and the offshore Cascadia Subduction Zone.

  16. Looking up resources for emergency kits online (#CascadiaSubductionZone, #AmericasMostDangerousVolcano, etc. etc.), and I keep accidentally opening preppers' sites. This is totally going to mess up how The Algorithms deal with me, isn't it?

  17. Via the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network at the University of Washington: "Tabloid news sites have recently been circulating information about this discovery [of Pythia's Oasis off the coast of Oregon] and claiming it is a harbinger of a large megathrust earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone. This idea misrepresents what we actually learn from observations of Pythia’s Oasis and creates a false sense of alarm."

  18. The more successful real-life tests of ShakeAlert in CA means that when we get a big quake in WA, many of us will get some advance warning via phone alerts.

This is very important for the next M9.0 Cascadia Subduction Zone quake, where the I-5 corridor may get up to 1 min before destructive shaking originating offshore reaches places like Seattle.

Something I wrote in 2019 about ShakeAlert:
