  5. #paleontology and yours truly in the world’s biggest English language newspaper! People really seem to urgently need to know where their backyard was in the Jurassic 😀 who would have thought that in 2026 #continentaldrift would enthrall the public? 😄 timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sc #geology #tectonics

  6. Tectonic Wall

A pretty famous geotope in the Allgäuer Alps with extreme folds and layering. The hundreds of meters thick top layer of mostly Dolomite belongs to the Lech valley thrust sheet (215 million years old) which got pushed above the Allgäu sheet below (190 million years old, here mostly covered by overgrown talus fields) and Radiolarite from the Ruhpolding formation even further below (160 million years old and originally 2000 meter below sea level — hard to imagine!).

  7. `We also document the oldest known geomagnetic reversal at ~3.46 Ga, consistent with an axial dipolar dynamo that reversed less frequently than today’s. The existence and rates of these surface and core geophysical phenomena provide geodynamic context to Earth’s early geophysical and biological evolution.`

“The Chiribiquete are table top mountains located deep in the Colombian Amazon and host many rare endemic species. Helanlin Xiang's work shows that the Chiribiquete Mountains likely upifted before the Early Miocene and could have acted as a long-lived stepping stone, connecting species in the Andes with the Guyana Shield…”

  18. #QuizOfTheDay: Plate #Tectonics is the generally accepted scientific theory that considers the Earth's lithosphere to comprise a number of large tectonic plates which have been slowly moving since about 3.4 billion years ago.

How many major Tectonic Plates are there?

    A. 5
    B. 6
    C. 7
    D. 8

  19. Last night was our second lecture of the MSHI Volcano Naturalist program. The title of the lecture was Volcanos 101. The starting point was plate tectonics then burrowing into the regional setting. Then a focus on igneous rocks, petrology, minerology, geochemistry. It’s a complicated topic but was presented well. I can see it being very challenging and difficult to visualize for someone who has never had a class in geology. #geology #volcano #tectonics #Cascades #PNW #igneous

  24. Plate #tectonics represents a defining framework of modern #geoscience, accounting for large-scale features on Earth’s surface, such as mountains and valleys, as well as the processes that shape them, like volcanoes and earthquakes.

Present-day plate tectonics have not been observed on any other world in the solar system, and evidence of past activity on planets such as #Mars and #Venus is circumstantial.

Perhaps the best case for extraterrestrial plate tectonics is found in the floating ice shell of #Jupiter’s #moon #Europa.

The plate tectonics on Europa differs from its Earthly analog. It is spatially widespread; it is regionally confined rather than globally connected; it occurs intermittently and is not happening now; and during past activity, plates drifted limited distances of between 10 and 100 kilometers.
