  1. The Cajon Pass functions as an "earthquake gate," a complex tectonic junction in Southern California that dictates whether seismic ruptures remain confined to a single fault or propagate simultaneously across the intersecting San Andreas and San Jacinto fault systems.

  2. A comprehensive 6,000-year study overturns the assumption that major #earthquakes follow predictable cycles, demonstrating instead that they occur in random clusters and lulls.

  3. Unravelling The Dance Of Earthquakes - Evidence Of Partial Synchronization Of The Northern San Andreas Fault And Cascadia Megathrust

“Previous paleoseismic work has suggested a possible stress triggering relationship between the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault based on similar event timings. Turbidite successions correlated to both systems may support this hypothesis. Historic earthquakes in 1980 and 1992 in the Cascadia subduction zone and the 1906 earthquake on the northern San Andreas fault left turbidite records that are temporally well constrained by bomb-carbon−supported age-depth models..."

[my engineering geology Masters thesis way-back-when on primarily paleoseismology utilised - in part - fault gouge quartz for empirical dating although I was using SEM pics to look at the quartz’s abrasion levels, interesting to see this advancement]

  6. This week, we visited a gallo-roman site (Villards-d’Heria) located on a potentially active fault in the Jura Mts 🇫🇷.

There are definitely disorders on archeological remnants that need to be investigated 🧐.

  7. Hi

I’m migrating from twitter and hope to find here new and old friends/colleagues.

    I mostly post about #earthquake #geology, #paleoseismology and #seismic #hazard.
    I 😍 field work! And outdoor activity in general (🚲 🏃‍♂️ 🏊‍♀️).

I work at the French Institute for Nuclear Safety (IRSN irsn.fr/) and run my research worldwide.

  8. I study #Paleoseismology, and #EarthquakeGeology. To study the faults and earthquakes that happened decades, centuries, or thousands of years back, we generally do excavations. These will expose the sediments and rocks deformed allowing us to infer how much deformation a given earthquake caused, its likely magnitude, and when did it happen. Thus, telling us how BIG and FREQUENT earthquakes can be on that fault (at that location). This is much needed to help understand hazards and mitigate risk.

  9. Hi everyone! I am an #earthquake #geologist and #earth #scientist currently based in #Oxford, UK. I work on #activefaults, #paleoseismology, and #tectonics problems around the world, but particularly in #CentralAsia and in the western USA. I did my PhD in #Reno #Nevada and my undergraduate in #Humboldt #California.
