Interbedding (Petrology 💎)
In geology, interbedding occurs when beds of a particular lithology lie between or alternate with beds of a different lithology. For example, sedimentary rocks may be interbedded if there were sea level variations in their sedimentary depositional environment. Intercalation is a special case of interbedding where a layer is variably inserted into an already existing s...

I have an #ichnology question. In Tralee Ireland I came across calcareous flagstones with amazing serpitiform trace fossils. I've never seen anything quite so large with such a form. Individual traces are perhaps up to 50cm long by 2-3cm wide. Has anyone a name for this? The closest I can think of is taenidium serpentium but that shows meniscate backfills, not evident here.
Answers greatfully received.

After years of picking up #sand samples, I've finally gotten around to bottling them. IMHO they look fantastic; colours from white to black, yellow to orange and even green (olivene sand from the Isle of Skye) and purple (garnet sand from Easter Ross). My favourite is bimodal desert sand from Abu Dhabi, v well rounded grains associated with VF/F well sorted grains.
Check out your local beach, esp the very back where interesting deposits often occur.

The earliest known eukaryotic organisms were exclusively benthic, inhabiting shallow, oxygenated marine seafloors rather than drifting in the anoxic open oceans. Their evolution and geographic distribution were fundamentally constrained by the highly localized availability of oxygen.

Neogene Uplift Of The Chiribiquete Tabletop Mountains In The Colombian Amazon And Its Paleobiogeographic Implications

“The Chiribiquete are table top mountains located deep in the Colombian Amazon and host many rare endemic species. Helanlin Xiang's work shows that the Chiribiquete Mountains likely upifted before the Early Miocene and could have acted as a long-lived stepping stone, connecting species in the Andes with the Guyana Shield…”

Conceptualizing River Floodplains
--

--
"PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: River floodplains are integrative ecosystems in which diverse processes operate together to maintain river health. Floodplains are as critical to river health as the channel itself, yet floodplains lack the legal protections afforded to river channels in many countries.
KEY POINTS
• A river floodplain is an integrative physical, chemical, biological system and a key component of a river corridor
• Contemporary societal perceptions and regulatory frameworks do not reflect this scientific consensus...”

Laterite (Pedology 🟤)
Laterite is a soil type rich in iron and aluminum that often forms in hot, wet areas; most such soil is found in the tropics. Nearly all laterites are of rusty-red coloration due to high iron oxide content. Laterite soils develop by intensive and prolonged weathering of the underlying parent rock, usually under conditions of high temperatures and heavy rainfall...

Lens (geology) (Petrology 💎)
In geology, a lens or lentil is a body of ore or rock that is thick in the middle and thin at the edges, resembling a convex lens in cross-section. To thin out in all directions is to "lens out", also known as "lensing". The adjectives "lenticular" and "lentiform" are used to describe lens-like formations. Lenticle is a synonym for lentil, but may also refer to a fragment of rock that...

Bar (river morphology) (Hydrology 💧)
A bar in a river is an elevated region of sediment that has been deposited by the flow. Types of bars include mid-channel bars, point bars, and mouth bars. The locations of bars are determined by the geometry of the river and the flow through it. Bars reflect sediment supply conditions, and can show where sediment supply rate is...

🚨 talk announcement! 🚨
How does the geological record form?
We can observe modern depositional environments using advanced remote sensing and direct sampling.
We can observe geological strata through seismics, drillcores, and direct sampling. What happens in between?
Xianyi Liu in my team is trying to find out, using the oldest known aerial photographs of the #Bahamas, and comparing them with today's facies distribution. It's a journey through #carbonate #sedimentology, #GIS, modelling and #MachineLearning. If you'd like a sneak peek, join his talk coming Tuesday at 17:00 CET at PaleoPERCS.

Box corer (Biodiversity 🦗)
The box corer is a marine geological sampling tool for soft sediments in lakes or oceans. It is deployed from a research vessel with a wire and suitable for any water depth. It is designed for a minimum of disturbance of the sediment surface by bow wave effects which is important for quantitative investigations of the benthic micro- to macrofauna, geochemi...

Unravelling The Dance Of Earthquakes - Evidence Of Partial Synchronization Of The Northern San Andreas Fault And Cascadia Megathrust
--
https://doi.org/10.1130/GES02857.1 <-- shared paper

“Previous paleoseismic work has suggested a possible stress triggering relationship between the Cascadia subduction zone and the northern San Andreas fault based on similar event timings. Turbidite successions correlated to both systems may support this hypothesis. Historic earthquakes in 1980 and 1992 in the Cascadia subduction zone and the 1906 earthquake on the northern San Andreas fault left turbidite records that are temporally well constrained by bomb-carbon−supported age-depth models..."

Some more #work stuff.
Getting an European Research Council (ERC) grant had this terrible outcome that I thought: now we can do in-depth, thoughtful research without cutting corners and ducktape solutions. Understanding #evolution in the #fossil record required a reproducible model representation of that record and we weren't satisfied with any of the existing models. Computer models made by (Earth) scientists are rarely very good, because we are not necessarily trained to make them, but to model events happening over hundreds of thousands of years, we crucially rely on their quality.
So we decided to develop one. Thanks to its main developer Johan Hidding @eScienceCenter and the collaboration with Peter Burgess, Xianyi Liu and @Niklas_Hohmann we have a fast, sustainable, #OpenSource package in #julialang for modeling #carbonate platforms.
The preprint is out for public review: please leave us a comment at https://egusphere.copernicus.org/preprints/2025/egusphere-2025-4561/ or try CarboKitten.jl at https://mindthegap-erc.github.io/CarboKitten.jl/

Abrasion (geology) (Glaciology 🗻)
Abrasion is a process of weathering that occurs when material being transported wears away at a surface over time, commonly occurring with ice and glaciers. The primary process of abrasion is physical weathering. Its the process of friction caused by scuffing, scratching, wearing down, marring, and rubbing away of materials. The intensity of abras...
