  1. Why Trying Stops Making Sense: The Psychology of Learned Helplessness

Jump to TL;DR You send out a tailored application, an hour or two spent getting it right, referencing the role specifically, leading with the right keywords. Nothing comes back. Not a rejection, just silence, the modern default. You do it again the next week, and the week after that, and at some point a quieter, more dangerous thought arrives: maybe it does not matter what I do. That thought is not a character flaw. It is a learned prediction, and psychology has a name for the pattern behind […]

  3. Thanks for to our position in the department. Your research is excellent. But your pitch went too much into subdivision A, while we are subdivision B. Please apply next time subdivision A has a call. No, we don't write in the ad that we want someone in A. We write physics department, consisting of A and B.

Sorry for trying to build bridges in your organization.

  5. Is there a platform where people share their #application advice / collect personal statements etc?

Every year a bunch of prospective students reach out to me, asking for #advice for #applying to #Cambridge - especially #Gates Cambridge #scholarship . Over the years I collected my advice in a doc & just send it to everybody asking for help.

Thinking about making this doc available on my website, so that it's more easy to access. Or is there a platform for this already?

  7. This one’s for all the #PhDstudent s and #postdoc s on here: What did people look at when #applying for their #PhD ?

Was it how interesting how found the project, how prestigious the uni, how acclaimed the supervisor? Apart from other specific preferences like the lab environment, involvement of their supervisor in teaching/training, etc…

I’m open to any and all #advice here.

Also somewhat trying to consider a future recruiter’s perspective, weighing up the perceived ‘value’ of the PhD 🤔

  9. Continuing to #apply to #infosec / #cybersec jobs, working my #resume until it's the best it's ever been and still not getting responses. Sometimes it feels futile, to be studying for a #ccna and #applying so much when you never hear back, but I must push on. Something /must/ be out there for me, right?
