A huge influence on the Arts and Crafts movement, William Morris revived block printing and vegetable dyeing. He set up looms for weaving tapestry and hand-knotting carpets in his home. His designs were also translated into stained glass. He was a knowledgeable textile historian, and fascinated by medieval history and medieval architecture.
Morris was the most successful textile designer and manufacturer of his day, with two London shops selling silk, cotton, and gauze. He designed and decorated parts of what’s now the Victoria & Albert. This museum has 1,100 objects connected to Morris—mainly textile and wallpaper, in various colours and scales, for interior decorating. Copyright on his repeating patterns of vegetation, flowers, and birds, recently expired, which fuelled a revival of these textile designs.

#Applied #cryptography cannot solve a #security problem. It can only convert a security problem into a key-management problem.
Corollary: If you aren’t actually solving the key-management problem, your cryptography is strictly decorative. This is not only not helpful, it is actively harmful, because it gives users a false sense of security, leading them to skip other precautions they would have otherwise taken.

Just recalled a moment from over a decade ago when it hit me that whoever had invented the pressure cooker must have known (or had an intuition) about the PV=nRT equation from chemistry.
Now I had heard that #cooking is just #applied #chemistry but this one was a bit too much for me at that time. I was just learning the equation in class and was annoyed about the weird problems I had to solve using the equation. Now it suddenly shows up in cooking? Nope.
I seemed to have grown up/matured a little, because I regularly use the fact that microwaves actually heat up water molecules and not food per se. I've generally been better than my parents at heating up or even cooking stuff in the #microwave because I understood what I think of as the water principle. It is now easy for me to ensure that reheated food comes out as soft as it should be instead of being hard chunks, especially refrigerated stuff.
