  2. Economist Says Philippines Has Crossed into Stagflation

As far as one economist is concerned, the Philippines has crossed into stagflation pointing to factors like domestic government spending reductions, soaring costs of food, high price of oil and more, according to a news report by the Manila Bulletin.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin report. Some parts in boldface…

The Philippines has crossed the line from a standard cyclical slowdown into genuine stagflation, driven by global energy price shocks, domestic government spending cuts, and soaring food costs, according to a regional economist.

Speaking at “CFME Talks Macro Outlook: Global, Australia, New Zealand, and the Philippines” briefing hosted by Center for Financial and Monetary Economics (CFME) on Wednesday, Oct. 21, David G. Fernandez, senior fellow at CFME and visiting professor at Philippine Center for Economic Development (PCED), warned that consensus growth forecasts for 2026 have plummeted from more than five percent to around 3.2 percent.

When asked what markers signal the shift to genuine stagflation, Fernandez said: “Well, I think that we’ve crossed the line. The revisions indicate that that’s what markets are expecting.”

He added that near-term growth could fall below already lowered forecasts while inflation could exceed expectations, emphasizing that this outlook “has to do with—not [the] fault of the Philippines—but the oil prices and potentially significantly higher food prices.”

“Growth could even be below the lowered forecasts and that inflation could be even higher than the higher forecasts that people have,” Fernandez added. “I worry about is that the optimism or the consensus forecast that we get back to five percent growth and you see inflation come down could be too optimistic themselves.”

Stagflation is generally understood as the simultaneous occurrence of elevated inflation, stagnant economic growth, and high unemployment, although economists do not have universally accepted numerical thresholds for determining when an economy has entered such a period.

In his presentation, Fernandez said inflation projections have shifted sharply upward, from an initial 2.6 percent toward six percent, with headline consumer price index (CPI) inflation already reaching 7.2 percent.

He described the country’s near-term trajectory as an extreme stagflation story, with forecast revisions becoming increasingly severe and the Philippines remaining firmly “under the radar” for international investors.

The economic slowdown was reflected in second-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) growth, which fell to a post-pandemic low of 2.3 percent.

Fernandez cautioned that growth was cushioned by inventory stockpiling and a doubling of government fuel subsidies even as underlying domestic demand weakened.

He said public investment plunged by nearly 14 percent following public sector retrenchment linked to the flood control scandal, while private consumption growth dropped below three percent as family incomes were eroded by rising transport and food costs.

Fernandez said it remained very difficult to build a narrative for a strong recovery. While growth may have reached its floor, he projected that any subsequent rebound would remain shallow and well below the economy’s six-percent potential trend growth.

Compounding the energy crisis, he said, is a rapid acceleration of second-round effects, with businesses passing higher input costs on to consumers faster than in previous shock cycles.

Headline inflation reached 7.2 percent in both April and September, with Fernandez pointing to rice prices surging by more than 20 percent and transport costs climbing nearly 15 percent.

He also flagged the possibility of a “Godzilla El Niño” pushing food prices even higher, warning that consumers and policymakers may have to endure headline inflation hovering around seven percent for an extended period.

Meanwhile, Fernandez said the widening economic fallout has pushed the Philippines’ current account deficit forecast to more than four percent of GDP, underscoring the country’s vulnerability to imported energy shocks.

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this recent development? Do you think the economist is correct that the Philippines has crossed over into stagflation? Do you think there is nothing the national government can do to lower the prices of oil, fuel and other things that are essential for Filipinos? Do you think the national economy will fall into a recession by early 2028?

  3. Man and Live-in Partner Arrested in Parañaque City over Illegal Firearms and Obstruction of Justice

Recently in the city of Parañaque, police officers conducted a raid against illegal firearms which resulted in the apprehension of a man for firearms and his live-in partner for interfering with the operation according to a Manila Bulletin news report.

To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the Manila Bulletin news report. Some parts in boldface…

A police raid against illegal firearms in Parañaque City led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man and his live-in partner, who allegedly tried to block officers from taking him into custody on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

The suspects, identified as alias “Bogie,” 35, and alias “Erica,” 27, were arrested during the implementation of a search warrant in Creekside Area 1 Extension, Sitio Libjo, Barangay Sto. Niño, around 3:05 p.m.

Police said Erica interfered with the operation, prompting her arrest for obstruction of justice, while Bogie was nabbed for alleged violation of Republic Act No. 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act.

The Sto. Niño Police Sub Station, backed by the SWAT team and Tactical Motorcycle Riding Unit, carried out the raid under a warrant issued by the Parañaque City Regional Trial Court.

Police recovered a .38-caliber revolver without a serial number and four rounds of ammunition, which will serve as evidence against Bogie.

Let me end this post by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? If you are a resident of Parañaque, are you concerned that there could be more loose firearms within the city? Has there been any gun-related incidents that happened in your local community over the past six months?

11. I keep reading that this is "widely considered the a masterpiece, possibly the best the Visual Novel medium has to offer" and I can only think the genre needs better quality standards, holy shit. It is tortuously written, over half of what I read so far (30 hours in) is basically filler words, repetitions of concepts established again and again and again and again and again. Flat insipid clichéd characters are fleshed out for hours but they never gain more depth, they are just as shallow but in a bigger space.
It is so frustrating that the novel does have genuinely good moments and writing that is hours and hours apart, because reaching them feels like wading through mud, it's slow, annoying and exhausting.

  12. Sarcator – The Ones We Follow Review By Creeping Ivy

Last year, Sarcator flew under the radar with a pretty rad platter. On the heels of their mixed sophomore outing, 2025’s Swarming Angels & Flies served up delectable blackened thrash with necrotic notes and refreshing traditional/surf-rock side dishes. A year later, I’m surprised to see them already plating The Ones We Follow. Also surprising was word that this Swedish trio has all but abandoned thrash on album four, adopting a flavor profile they don with a curious descriptor: ‘death’s rock.’ Skepticism-inducing as any major sonic shift should be, the rock elements of Swarming Angels & Flies did elevate my excitement over Sarcator’s riffy brand of thrash with the crispy skin. In turning this element into the main course, I’m left wondering if these young Swedes returned to the kitchen prematurely.

Despite the generic shift, Sarcator still retain the unhinged aggression characterizing their blackened thrash menu. Indeed, guitarist/vocalist Mateo Tervonen belts an acerbic ‘owww!’ on opener “The Ones We Follow,” with drummer Jesper Rosén speeding between kit pieces underneath. It’s the guitar work, however, that distinguishes old from new Sarcator. Rather than relying on syncopated palm mutes and serpentine riffs, Tervonen and Leo Buchalle favor twangy licks and careening power chords. The solos also affirm this new, ‘classic’ approach, adding bluesy soul into the mix. Almost rockabilly in nature, it’s as if Hellripper collided with Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. As the record progresses, Sarcator introduce a host of country western elements—slide guitar, harmonica, the occasional snake rattle—with big Wayfarer1 energy (“Volatile Insight,” “Ain’t Fit to Live”). These country western-isms might imply a seismic shift, but it’s not as if Sarcator sound like a completely different band. The sandwich is now (western-tinged) rock, but its wrapper is still youthful, abrasive, and—yes—blackened.

Sarcator build this batch of tunes atop time-tested chord progressions, with Tervonen’s vocals tasked with cutting through the listener’s palette. For the most part, he delivers. The choruses on “In Search of Oblivion” and “Volatile Insight” hit the sweet spot between attitude and stickiness through deliberate spacing and cadence. Tervonen’s tongue trills are tantalizing, becoming a bit of a signature throughout. Not every song, however, strikes a salutary balance. “The Underground Streets” could pay off its guitar earworm with a stronger vocal hook, while “Bleeding Ages” is in need of memorability. Penultimate country rocker “Wasteland Strider” tosses a vocal curveball, containing clean singing before it gets death n’ rolling. It’s a jarring change that, while well executed, feels a little like variety for variety’s sake this late in the album. Production-wise, Tervonen’s voice is a bit more prominent in the mix than I’d like, at the expense of melodic support from the bass.2 But overall, The Ones We Follow sounds open and punchy, with Tervonen’s voice commanding deserved attention.

While not their longest meal, The Ones We Follow pits a girthy album length against a mostly immediate vibe. Shorter songs like “The Ones We Follow” and “You Gotta Possess Me” kill it, kicking in the door with controlled chaos. The clash between immediacy and girth, however, reveals itself mostly in the album’s epics. Seven-minute centerpiece “Rotting Chapels” implies scope with its key-changing buildup, but it ends up sounding like a longer version of the abrasive surf rock heard earlier. Meanwhile, closer “Wanderlust” epitomizes its title, wandering from mid-paced cowboy bumps to “Hot for Teacher”-style fretboard gymnastics and harmonica-sweetened blues dirt. It’s highly entertaining stuff, skirting the line between jamming and riff salad-ing. The album’s 50 minutes may look long on paper, but there’s enough head-turning developments to keep things interesting. The Dire Straits-y ending to “Rotting Chapels” comes to mind, as does the brush-fueled gallop in “Bleeding Ages.”

Leaving me a little hungry at first, The Ones We Follow ultimately won me over with its blackening of a more rustic protein. I applaud Sarcator for daring to change, and there’s lots of tasty stuff on here, with nothing off-putting. Still, The Ones We Follow could elevate its addictive attitude and classic songwriting with more vocal hooks and judicious editing. What crystal clear, however, is that the members of Sarcator are having a hell of a lot of fun here, rocking out and experimenting in equal measure. I’ll continue following these Swedes in the future, as they show signs of following The Ones We Follow with something seriously sumptuous.

I came home from work some time ago to find my wife settling down to watch the latest episode of Coronation Street.

Onscreen, a new family had recently moved on to the street, and the Dad was shown talking to a couple of the regular characters, making arrangements to do something, and it struck me – in just 3 minutes of screen time, a brand new character had exchanged more words with his neighbours than I had in the 10 1/2 years I had lived here.

Which got me thinking – of all the things I know, how to make friends isn’t one.

Out of all my friends (at least, out in the so-called “real world”), all of them decided I was a person they wanted to be friends with, they did all the running, and all I did was decide to go along with them.

This was rarely something I did lightly – there were plenty of people who decided we were going to be friends, but I decided to have nothing to do with them – but with all the people I count as friends, they did all the running, and I just went along with it.

It’s the same with relationships – off hand, I can only think of 6 times I asked girls out – 2 of them turned me down flat, 2 were the same girl on 2 different occasions (and I eventually asked her to marry me – which later happened!), and the other 2 times ended pretty disastrously. Every other time I got into a relationship, they did all the running after me, and I just went along with it.

On a related note, I have no idea how small talk works – this is an essential skill for developing all manner of relationships, and yet I have not a single clue as to the purpose of small talk, nor how it works – I can do it, but only by copying conversational gambits I’ve seen other people use, which means that conversations with me can often be stilted, and are liable to turn rather strange at unexpected moments.

By extension, flirting (and “chatting someone up”) is also something where I utterly fail to grasp any mechanism by which it works. As I said about small talk, I can do it, I just have no idea what I’m doing.

Actually, I would like to modify those statements – I can do small talk and flirting, but only if I don’t think about it – as soon as I start to think about what I am doing, or what I should say next, I turn in to Cat in the infamous dance/dream sequence from Red Dwarf ( https://youtu.be/yn8wWQweNbU ) – I get tongue-tied, and completely unable to communicate.

Which, let’s face it, isn’t good, whether you’re discussing the weather with the random person sitting next to you on the bus home from work, or chatting up some random stranger in a bar.

I’ve no idea if it is connected to all this, but I have always had a preference for my own company – not having to fill any silences or think of topics of conversation is always pleasant.

I remember back in school, I had a friend I spent a lot of time with – many were the times we finished school, went to the local library to collect some books, then went back to his, where we would occupy chairs at opposite sides of his living room, then read books in silence, until the time I had to leave to go home – about the only thing his mother ever heard me say was “Right, I’d better get off. See ya!”

One of the things I love about my marriage, and my wife – we often spend time just being in the same room – not necessarily talking, not necessarily doing the same thing, but doing whatever it is we are doing, together.

One of us might be watching telly while the other reads, or she might be doing something on her computer, usually doing some family history research, and I’ll walk in with my laptop and slouch down in a chair and do some writing for one project or another – but we are doing it, together, just enjoying being with someone.

Louise’s office is by the front window of the dining room, and I will often be found in the kitchen, through the rear of the dining room, cooking up a storm, while we listen to some music, which usually involves one of us dancing our way over to the other and busting some moves for a few seconds before going back to what we were doing.

We might also be talking  – but no-one is being forced to talk, only when we are ready, which I find makes conversations flow more easily.

And this is the thing – I’m not, as some people think, anti-social, I don’t hate people, I don’t want to avoid having friends – I just want friends who are on my wavelength, friendships on my terms – friends who are willing to accept that I don’t always want to be drawn into conversation, but when I feel the need to talk will accept that as well.

I’m asocial, quite possibly because of my autism, and proud of it.

Social interactions leave me physically and mentally exhausted – which means that, if I put any time or effort into interacting with you, then you should feel honoured.

(Or I’m at work, and have to put the minimum effort in!)

  16. I ran a heavyweight review over the code that decrypts incoming vulnerability reports, and the findings weren't what stopped me. It was the forty-two //nolint comments underneath them.

Each one tells a checker to leave a line alone. "Bounded by the caller." "Bounded above." That's vouching for the code rather than describing it, and the next reader takes its word.

They arrived in days rather than years, from agents working through review findings at speed and doing what I'd asked. Ask for a clean lint run and there are two ways to get one: fix the code, or tell the checker to shut up. Only one requires understanding the finding.

So I went through them. The true ones mostly stopped needing a comment at all, and several of the false ones were hiding real unchecked conversions.

Then a new one turned up mid clean-up, on a Close():

//nolint:errcheck // the read below is what matters

That's backwards. In OpenPGP the integrity check happens when you close the reader, so the error being thrown away was the whole check. It got caught in review and never landed, and there's a test on it now.

The fix I wrote, moving the exceptions into config with the reasoning beside them, then failed in its own way: three exclusions named linters that weren't enabled. Careful prose governing nothing, and nothing tells you.

  17. You shipped the feature, fixed the bugs, and answered the "quick question" that turned into a two-hour debugging session. The invoice went out on the first of the month. Thirty days later: nothing.

The most I have ever waited on was $4,800. The client answered every message within a day - "accounts is processing it", "the approver is on holiday", "next Friday, promise". What got it paid was not a longer or angrier email. It was the third email in a sequence I already had sitting in my drafts folder, sent on day 30, worded almost exactly like the one below. The money arrived in 48 hours.

If you freelance or run a small dev shop, chasing payment for finished work is one of the worst parts of the job. The fix is not a better apology for asking. It is a process: the same three emails, on the same days, every time.

    Here they are, copy-paste.

    Day 7: the polite nudge

At seven days past the due date, assume a boring explanation. The invoice was missed, routed to the wrong person, or stuck in an approval queue. Your goal is a response without friction.

Subject: Quick follow-up on invoice #[NUMBER]

    Hi [CLIENT NAME],

I'm following up on invoice #[NUMBER] for [PROJECT/DELIVERABLE], which was due on [DUE DATE].

Could you confirm that it's been received and let me know when I can expect payment?

For reference, the outstanding amount is [AMOUNT].

    Thanks,
    [YOUR NAME]

Why this works: you identify the invoice, state the amount, and ask for one specific next step. No accusation, no essay.

Send it in the original invoice thread so the context travels with it. If they reply with a payment date, write it down. A promise in a casual email is easy to forget - yours and theirs.

    Day 14: the firm follow-up

Two weeks late, be more direct. This message says the balance needs attention; it does not ask whether anyone saw your last email.

Subject: Payment overdue - invoice #[NUMBER]

    Hi [CLIENT NAME],

Invoice #[NUMBER] for [AMOUNT] was due on [DUE DATE] and remains unpaid.

Please confirm the scheduled payment date by [RESPONSE DEADLINE].

If payment has already been processed, please disregard this reminder and let me know so I can update my records.

    Thank you,
    [YOUR NAME]

Why this works: it replaces a vague request with a clear action and a deadline, and it gives the client an easy out if payment is already moving.

Set the response deadline at two business days. If the answer is "waiting for approval," ask when approval is expected. If "accounting pays on Fridays," ask which Friday your invoice is scheduled for. Turn "we'll get to it" into something you can track.

Check your contract before this email. If it allows late fees, interest, or pausing work, know the terms before you invoke them. Never add fees the contract does not mention.

These templates are communication examples, not legal advice. Check your contract and applicable local law before adding late fees or taking collection action.

    Day 30: the final notice

A month overdue changes the conversation. Stay polite, but do not send a third email that sounds like the first one.

Subject: Final payment notice - invoice #[NUMBER]

    Hi [CLIENT NAME],

Invoice #[NUMBER] for [AMOUNT], originally due on [DUE DATE], remains outstanding despite my previous follow-ups.

Please arrange payment in full by [FINAL DEADLINE] or contact me by that date to confirm a concrete payment arrangement.

If the balance remains unpaid and I have not received an agreed resolution, I will consider the next steps available under our agreement and applicable law, which may include formal collection or recovery proceedings.

Please confirm receipt of this notice.

    Regards,
    [YOUR NAME]

Why this works: it is factual, it documents the history, and it sets an explicit deadline without threats you cannot carry out.

Only name actions you are genuinely prepared and legally entitled to take. Before formal recovery, review your agreement, preserve the invoices and correspondence, and check the rules in the relevant jurisdiction. And do not assume you can shut down a live service, revoke access, or withhold source code - your contract decides that, not your frustration.

What happens between the emails matters as much

    1. Keep a payment log. Invoice number, amount, due date, reminder dates, responses, promised dates. The day you have three late invoices, this log is the only thing keeping the story straight.
    2. Separate payment from new work. A client who has not paid asking for another feature is not an automatic yes. Review the agreement and discuss a pause or revised schedule.
    3. Make paying easy. Every email includes the invoice, the amount, payment instructions, and the reference their accounting needs. Every extra step is another week.
    4. Fix the next contract. Explicit payment terms, a defined invoicing schedule, a stated late-fee rule. For larger projects, milestone payments instead of one big invoice at the end.
    5. Do not let one client be your whole business. A great relationship is still a financial risk if one unpaid invoice stops you paying your own bills.

Build the system before you need it

The best time to decide how you handle late payment is before an invoice goes overdue. Set three calendar reminders for days 7, 14, and 30, save the scripts as templates, and when the day comes you fill in the brackets and send. You follow a process instead of writing an email while frustrated.

Your turn: what is worse - clients who ignore reminders, clients who keep promising "next week," or clients who dispute the invoice after the work is done? And what actually worked for you?

  18. Guten Morgen!

  20. My friends and comrades, as we come to the end of this day given to us by the Flying Spaghetti Monster, let us humbly reflect on our sins unto the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

"8. Help me be grateful that tonight’s meal and nourishment provide what I need (The Loose Canon, The Official Pastafarian Prayer Book, “The True and Wonderous Story of How Was Delivered Unto Auntie Dee Dee the Most High and Holy Prayer,” p. 182; “I thank the Pasta, and the Sauce, and the Meatballs, for they provide me all my needs.”)"

😋 I confess to almighty Flying Spaghetti Monster and to you, my friends and comrades, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault.
Forgive our sins and renew us in the Lord.
    R'Amen 🍜

🍝 The Almighty and merciful Lord, the Flying Spaghetti Monster,
grant you absolution and remission of all your sins, true repentance, amendment of life, and the grace and consolation of Quob Holy Noodle.
    R'Amen 🍜

    😂

  22. I sit here, atop a mountain of rubble—what was once a home that held the details of my life and the warmth of my memories. It is as if time itself has come to a standstill, leaving me alone to grapple with the bitterness of loss and the harshness of reality.
Amidst these scattered ruins, I am not merely bidding farewell to silent stones; I am saying goodbye to an entire lifetime—to dreams that, in the blink of an eye, have turned to ash. I look around and see nothing but destruction. I call out to the world, hoping that the echo of my voice might pierce this deadly silence and bring forth a helping hand—a rescue.
Tears choke my words, and my heart is gripped by agony as I recall every corner, every smile that once graced this place—before a cruel and unjust war stole it all away. What kind of cruelty is this, that leaves us to carry the wreckage of our own souls atop the wreckage of our homes? What kind of fate is this, that forces us to stand face-to-face with such a desolate, barren void??

  23. #WritersCoffeeClub 10/26. How did you develop your voice?

By writing. That's how it works.

The focus on "finding your voice" is stupid (and potentially damaging to new writers). You "find it" by writing.

100,000 words should do it. (Not that it stops there.)

  24. ❤️ If you have a good father, tell him you love him. 🙏

He showed up tired. He worked when nobody saw it. Most of what he gave you, you didn't understand until you grew up.

That's legacy. Not what he owned, but who you became because he was there.

One day his chair will be empty. Don't wait. Call him. Say the words. 📞

Fathers: they're watching. Make the story a good one. 💪

  25. Goedemorgen! We krijgen ene rustige herfstdag.

  28. The r/opensource rules for the sub are some of the most narcissistic and entitled things I've seen in a while, especially the provision for "only using English", at a time when machine translation is so good that it even understands nuance, play on words and colloquialisms.

I really want the anti-AI Andys to pull their head out of the sand for a second and realise they're embracing reactionary elements.

  29. Well That’s Comfortingly Vague

    A Reassuring Statement

From time to time, the platform offers a statement meant to settle concerns. A brief assurance. A carefully worded promise that things are being handled.

Details are unnecessary. What matters is the tone. Calm. Confident. Resolute.

    On Saying Without Explaining

The language is broad enough to include everything and specific enough to sound meaningful. Words like “working on it,” “taking steps,” and “community standards” appear just often enough to reassure without committing to anything in particular.

    Clarification would only complicate matters.

    Trust, Kindly Requested

Users are invited to accept the statement at face value. To move on. To trust that someone, somewhere, has addressed the issue appropriately.

Questions are permitted, of course. Answers may vary.

    A Polite Aside

In ordinary conversation, such vagueness would prompt follow-up. One might reasonably ask what was done, when, and by whom.

But bless their heart, they do seem to think reassurance should be sufficient.
