Ich glaube, es war die Gitarre von Mark Knopfler, die mir in Erinnerung blieb. Oder dieses „Chicks for free“ – ein Ausdruck, mit dem ich in meinen jungen Jahren Ende der Achtziger noch gar nichts so richtig anzufangen wusste. Aber die Musik war genial, und wann immer Dire Straits im Radio liefen, erhöhte ich dezent die Lautstärke. Trotzdem hat es bis zu meinem zweiten Drehteller gedauert, bis ich mir ein Album der Dire Straits zulegte, und es musste als erstes natürlich Money for Nothing sein. Ja, es ist eine Compilation, aber eine gute, und es sind all die Lieder, die ich vor vielen Jahren so gern im Radio gehört hatte.
Mir gefallen die Texte von Mark Knopfler und natürlich sein einzigartiges Spiel auf der Gitarre.
Ob Sultans of Swing oder Romeo And Juliet oder auch das beinahe schon legendäre Money for Nothing, auf dieser Rille sammelt sich ehrliche, gute Musik, die ich mir immer wieder anhören kann.
Mein absoluter Lieblingssong ist aber ein weniger beachteter Titel, den man auch nicht sonderlich oft im Radio hört: Private Investigations - ein Song, der sich im Stil und auch in der Thematik doch sehr von den anderen bekannte Songs von Dire Straits absetzt. Melancholie, Sarkasmus, Enttäuschung – getragen von sanften, ruhigen Melodien - erzählen eine Geschichte, und vor dem inneren Auge entstehen Bilder von langen Mänteln und Hüten, von einem Schreibtisch, auf dem eine Zigarre im Aschenbecher vor sich hin qualmt, und von einer Flasche Whisky. Grandios!
Diese Version von Philip Marlowe passt eigentlich so gar nicht zu Mark Knopfler. Denn wenn ich mir den Mann anschaue, habe ich immer das Gefühl, einen Finanzbeamten vor mir zu haben, der in seiner Freizeit Taschenrechner und Stift gegen die Gitarre austauscht.

From the "where were you when..?" department, I remember the first time I heard "Sultans of Swing" by #DireStraits ;
In 1977, I was a 14-yr old leader of a shitty band in Athens, Greece, and we were waiting to get on Stage. The place was playing bumper music, and "Sultans..." came on. I remember being almost overwhelmed with a "what... why... what *IS* that?" feeling.

40 years ago this week, "Money For Nothing" by #DireStraits reached the top spot, replacing "St. Elmo's Fire" by #JohnParr after 2 weeks. The animators of this video went on to create the animated series "ReBoot".
